I just found out yesterday that my 90 year old grandfather still hasn't used any money from his retirement account! He still has a job, and he and my grandmother have had their home paid off since their mid thirties. I'm pretty sure he is the ultimate goal in frugality 😂.

In the past, I have told myself that I work hard and I deserve this or that or the other. I'm a single mom and only make $15.60 an hour. Now I tell myself I deserve a clean, clutter free home. I'm working now on getting my home clean and organized I spend my money on paint and things to fix up my home so I can be happy in my space without the "stuff"

When we were newly married (1981) we had very little money for groceries. Our treat food was popcorn. We bought the kernels and popped them, so it was a very cheap treat. We also ate a lot of Banquet pot pies, which were sometimes four for a dollar at that time. When my kids were little, they had eggs or oatmeal for breakfast, not sugar coated boxed cereal. Instead of PopTarts, my kids got toast with cinnamon sugar. We spend too much on groceries now, and I have instituted two cheap meal nights a week. One of those is likely to be breakfast for dinner, and another will be goulash, or some other meat-stretching meals. I eat a keto diet due to type 2 diabetes, but for me that just means I don't eat carbs, starches, or sugar. It's cheaper to omit those things than to buy "keto friendly" meals and snacks. It is possible to eat a special diet without buying specialty foods!

I grew up on Oleo, but really prefer butter. I make sure to stock up when it's on sale. I don't eat a lot of it, but the stuff I froze was $1.60 a pound. That's cheaper than most margarines now.

My beloved grandmother lived to be nearly 95 years old. For the most part she used margarine for many years. She could have afforded butter but she was careful with her money. She also ate a fair amount of Spam, Crisco or lard in baking (a significant sweet tooth,100% Swede). She kept all things in balance though and God blessed her, I believe, for a faithful life.

My guilty pleasure is butter and good coffee. I buy butter only when it is on sale for $2.99/lb and freeze it. When it's gone, it's gone. If I see a bag of coffee beans reduced for quick sale I buy it and savour it. When it's gone it's gone. I swing by the grocery store on the way home from my night shift (7am) and thats when the meat department marks down their meats. 😁 I usually manage yo save up to 50% off my grocery bill every time.

I needed this "rant" I am fine financially but I am stressed about what I should be stocking for the hard times that seem to be coming pretty fast. And I have a lot of GMOs in my pantry. I missed the warning about GMOs. Thank you for your perspective. I feel better knowing someone else is eating GMOs. I am surrounded by people that are totally against GMOs. And yes they eat out a lot. They are willing to spend the extra money to eat GMO free groceries. I am rambling. But I am having a mentally bad week. I just need to give myself a break. This video is perfect. Thank you!

I totally agree with MOST of what you are saying. I do however, feel that there are one or two items that you feel strongly about, then do those two items and cut everything else. I personally eat butter versus margarine. BUT, I only buy it at $1.99/lb and have enough to last quite a while. I DON'T spend a lot of money on meat. I buy leg quarters, beef on deep discounts, pork on deep discounts, etc. I teach people to pick your battles. Save where you can so you can "splurge" on those one or two items. Now "splurge" may not be the perfect word. I mean a few dollars a month, not hundreds of dollars. I came home with my first at 3 months and have been "home" ever since. I've made money sporadically, but I've SAVED it consistently.

I had a thought for those who may be aiming for a special diet. One of the best things we can do for our health and spirit is fasting starting with intermittent fasting and Working up to alternate day fasting. So maybe by incorporating this, they can buy less overall and have some more wiggle room to pay for the more expensive items in their budget.

Last year I enlarged my backyard garden and grow a lot of our fruit & veg. I make our own tomato sauces and jams. Not exactly a homesteader but I feel great about growing and preserving a lot of my own food. This year, before retiring at the end of next year, I bought grow lights and shelving so I can up my garden production (I harvest my own seeds and that saves 💰 too).

My gut is so wrecked I can't tolerate plant food without becoming very sick. so for me I look for the best price on meat and poultry plus animal fats. It's a health issue not a need for luxury. We cut back on other things in the budget and are not in debt. As someone with food intolerances, I'm surprised you wouldn't have an understanding of that.

I 100% agree with you about people bleating endlessly about being poor and then whinging more about how they cannot / will not give up things that are luxuries. The definition of insanity is expecting different outcomes without changing your choices/behaviours. I have a friend who spends $100 weekly on cigarettes and alcohol but expects me to help her financially. Repeat with most of my friends and relatives and I am choosing more and more to just keep to myself to prevent them from stressing me out. Tara, I love your honesty, and I have learned a lot from you over the past few years.

I was sitting with a family member that got high degrees (and had to work her way through) and another person. They talked so different than I normally heard the family member talk. I did not understand why it was different other than they went to college. My family member told me that she did not consider her degrees worth anything special, except for her to obtain a specific job. The difference is she understands what they are saying and she can answer so they understand. My family member use to work as a teacher. She does not work there now because of the school system now. The other person now works for circle K. You do not always make lots of money by spending a lot for college. My husband and I agreed that I would stay home and raise my children. All my children are Christians and respect their parents and elders. Also my relationship with my husband is wonderful. We have been married 53 years. We both tried to do what the Bible said and not what the churches or world said to do. We try to do what the Lord told us in the Bible. Of course we do not consider us better than the churches. There is none righteous no not one and that includes us. Love your audits. I liked the last one I watched that was shorter also. Love your rants also and you say it like it is. Yes Hodie Todie-I get that.

It's like still being at home with family. You do things similar to my childhood, but I always thought I needed to improve what was being done, you know, like I deserve to go out and eat after working all day, rather than fixing a meal at home. I am ashamed of all of the money we wasted over the years, but we are debt free except for our mortgage. We are retired and paying the mortgage down quickly. I have your two cookbooks and we rarely go out to eat anymore. I have used your books a great deal! I am praying for you all concerning the direction of your show.🙏

Tawra, Mike and Jill. I have learned so much from you, I really watch for sales now, and compare prices. I even Finally have my husband checking prices. For instance, if their is a sale on something, like 2 for a certain price, Hubby is actually checking now, to see if the one item, weighs as much as the two items. So many times the one item is the best buy. Every time I go to do things YOUR voice is in the back of my mind, and I do lot's of rethinking because of it. You really have helped me so much. One store here, last week, had great sales on 3 items I use. We went into the store and bought as many of the three items as we could afford. Except for the potatoes, Only bought one 20 lb bag. But got great deals on Bacon and Sardines. But I never even looked at any other items, AS I had gone through the grocery flyers, and only went for the sales. Some of it is for stock piling, the rest is to use, but replace when these great sales come around again. SO PLEASE DO YOUR SHOWS, ON ANY AND ALL OF THE THINGS YOU HAVE BEEN DOING. I LOVE watching ALL of them!!!! LOVE YOU ALL.

On the car debate .... We have always considered the cost of a replacement vehicle vs the cost of repairs and likeky upcoming repairs. This said, more often than not we have been able to do our own tune-ups, brakes, clutch replacement, and the similar; this cuts down on the cost of an aging vehicle 'cause reality is these parts are more maintenance than repairs if youve put some miles on a vehicle. While we enjoy all of the features which come via the car's electrical system, weve always steered clear of them because they just mean more to go wrong. For some time now, we've opted for older vehicles with as few chips as possible too.

I do because my rice stockpile went out of date a decade ago. I didn't repackage it out of original bags. It kinda smells. You can rinse that away. Also, I read the instructions on a basmati rice pkg and they advise you to rinse their rice.

You are so right about use worshipping food, it’s crazy I used to help at my local food bank and to see people driving up with brand new cars and trucks with lots of jewelry, talking about how they just bought the new IPhone and expensive watches, gaming systems and on. I would think why are using the food bank when you have all these things you could sell and buy your basic needs with that money.

I love the grocery audits! Seeing things laid out in front of me, "real time", puts me in that headspace I'm in when shopping. A lot of these messages I need to hear, especially margarine! I've been anti margarine since the early 90's! lol Old adages are the best, like beggars can't be choosers, waste not want not, plus other homily's which are crucial today.

Happy Wedding Anniversary to you both! May God guide you in the direction for your channel at this time. I love the grocery audits but wonder if it's worth just doing them every couple of weeks to save time. I love the Q&A lives that give me lots of information & tips. Actually, I enjoy all of your vids & I'm excited to see your GF DF channel recipes. I totally agree that marketing sayings have really tricked people.... like "you deserve it" & "smells clean" etc!! Lies!! 🥰Blessings from South Australia💕🐨

Yay! I love it when you guys do a video together! I've been traveling for the last month and missed you. BY THE WAY, TAWRA JEAN. You once commented why people can't just pause the video when they are long. You see when I have your video's on, I feel like it's a visit with old friends, and I don't want to interrupt the visit. God Bless You and your family 🧸!

Tara, I've been getting 3 pounds of apples for $1.99. I stocked up. I tried the apple pancake syrup recipe you showed recently. I froze the cores and used them to make it. it was so delicious and economical! Thanks for another great recipe!

Doing keto is not expensive… you buy meat /eggs abs vegetables… you don’t need anything else! No special snack foods.. no special drinks.. you need electrolytes? Great take a tsp of real sea salt and water and you will be fine. I did it and lost 60 pounds and the only “luxury “ item I ever bought was a bag of Lillie’s chocolate chips to make my own peanut butter cups once a month when my hormones wanted and treat haha it’s not expensive And I did one meal a day and hello.. my food lasted FOREVER lol

With your help we paid off our debt. However, since we're now on a fixed income, you're right I can no longer afford butter, steak, cheese, bacon, alcoholic drinks. I'm also watering down my shampoo but haven't noticed a difference.

What if you did this for example: grocery audit every other Monday so it’s not as time consuming, a cleaning video on the other Monday, every Wednesday q and a, cooking lesson every Thursday and a prep video every Friday. Just an idea to try out. You’d hit every nitch of those groups while possibly gettting more subs or just cookbooks sold to different audiences. I think it could work for a channel like yours really well. I’ve noticed since I’ve been watching you hit most of these and stay with one for a while then switch more permanently to the other ect.. but if on a rotation might be what you want.

For an east coast foliage trip - in south central PA we are in peak colors right now! so if starting north, you may need to start in early October :) but chasing the colors sounds fun! Lots of towns have fall foliage festivals.

You’re right. There’s a lot of fear and demonization of food- all or nothing thinking. It’s priorities. If we want to eat butter or meat and avoid margarine or beans then other stuff has to give. Boxed cereal, soda pop, and “snacks” all chew up the budget. I prioritize butter and meat but I save by not eating “snacks” or baking sugary foods. Rice is great, I’m gluten free and gf special foods are expensive but rice and potatoes aren’t. Eating lower carb means I still enjoy rice and potatoes and veggies and I don’t eat a lot of fruit and I eat cheaper cuts of meat I buy on special.
