    I like some of the takes you've brought to the table, although I disagree with some of it. I think a large part of the song is also empowering your sexuality without it being outrageous and dirty. You can be sexy, nude, and still be just as deserving of respect for yourself and your thoughts. Also, being nude isn't inherently wrong - even when it's being naked. There's obviously a lot of layers of commentary.

    @sunset moth while I do agree that a large part of this song is commenting on how women are viewed as objects, I still think soyeon has something to say about liberation. Remember on tomboy she deliberately has lyrics that says "I like [sex]" which is commenting on how that's apparently outrageous for women to like. I think she's very aware of the expectation of women and how they cant be sexually empowered as well as how they are seen as only objects. They aren't allowed to enjoy the things they are objectified for.

    @sunset moth i think it's how people sexualize women's naked bodies excessively. Equating a woman's nude to something sexual. The line which went like 'i'm born nude. You just have a perverted mind' explains it really well. I think the msg is simply that a woman's body is just a human body, not sexual objects or art pieces.

    I like to interpret the scene of them dancing in the burlesque outfits without an audience as a way to say women's bodies and sex appeal are not for public consumption, same goes for the drawing of a naked woman getting shredded. Idk how that would fit in with the rest of the mv bc i haven't thought about it but it feels like it has multiple layers of meaning

    Just a note. I think this comeback is also about sexuality. About how being a sexually active woman or a woman who wants to feel sexy is not dirty or shouldn’t mean they deserve to be slutshamed. Yesss! Also, on the shredding painting: I think this means that a woman’s sexuality is not for anyone else, it’s hers. She shouldn’t be sexualized whenever people wants to see her like that, even if she is fully nude or being sexy. She deserves respect. And no one, not even her partner, her manager or her fans own her sexually. So it’s also about consent. Such a masterpiece really. I am not an English speaker so for me idc about grammar. The message is there, we have to think out of the box.

    I interpreted the Banksy reference as a commentary about how nude paintings are seen as this valuable and wonderful things that people pay a fortune for, but women in real life are constantly slut-shamed. It's like women's bodies are only valuable when objectified, but if a woman undresses herself in her own power in real life or if she makes money off of how she looks she's considered to be cheap

  • @dots6127
    @dots6127 Жыл бұрын

    i think the banksy ref can also refer to something else. the painting was originally shredded was to spread the message of the commodification of art, yet the shredded painting became even more expensive after the shredding. this can parallel idle, who are trying to spread the message and trying to be free either site on stripping in the previous scene, yet in the end, the message would still used for $$ even if people get it, hence the clapping. This is why Soyeon is so tired in the end, because no matter what idle does, the media won't listen, companies won't listen, the industry will only change for money's sake, shown with the 'shreds of paper' in the 2nd last scene which can also stand in for $$.

    Very well done analysis of the MV. I actually completely agree with your point. I wasn't aware of the fact that it's value ironically went up because of cause of the stunt, whilst also ignoring the artists message. But then again, that's the media and commercialism in the industry for you. Everything is about money, and it obviously headlined because of the stunt, making it a more valuable piece to the rich snobs trying to auction/buy it for their own gain. That just makes the ending scene even more powerful and provocative in Idle's message to their viewers. The producers (including Soyeon) definitely did their homework and really expressed what they were trying to tell everyone through this song. Soyeon definitely deserved to win the songwriting award at the MMA's a few days ago.

  • @abz2827
    @abz2827 Жыл бұрын

    My take on "now I draw a luxury nude" This line was meant to represent Idle taking control of their image and reclaiming the insults thrown at them by antis/haters/the general public. In the scene before this where Soyeon is taking off her top, we see comments such as "guys don't like this" and "I think she's a pervert". Soyeon is now reclaiming this by saying that SHE is going to be the one drawing her own luxury nude.

It's probably because of the art style, but it reminds of her quote 'I'm not bad, I'm just drawn this way'. She just happens to 'born' the way that she is and its just her being her. Honestly, Shuhua's whole scene reminded me of Evelyn Hugo (from the fictional book Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo) which is very very interesting because Evelyn Hugo was also a very popular sex symbol in hollywood (and even fetishized for being hispanic). The book mainly talks about how Evelyn did literally everything she could to become THE hollywood starlet while struggling with everything from PR relationships to her own sexuality (a huge part of the narrative) only to give up the fame and move to a small town with the few people she cared about. Evelyn also did some extremely controversial pg13 scenes to gain back fame after her pregnancy at the cost of her relationship. I don't know if they actually refer to the book in the music video or not but if they do, it's certainly a very deep and interesting commentary on the cost of fame.

    I think “now I draw a fancy nude” is them saying that they’ve made themselves “naked” in this song. They’ve drawn this image of themselves now and shown it to the world. Then with the reference to Banksy- banksy installed the auto shredder to take back his power if his painting was ever sold. It was a way to say “you can’t have this. I’m in power and you can sit and watch, but at the end of the day I control the narrative”. I think they wanted to demonstrate this with the reference, saying they’ve made themselves “nude” but they hold the power in their nudity. Of course, like banksy (if we want to take it this far), people will still take advantage of their art/nudity and not understand the point of it. But still, at the end of the day, the painting is shredded. They’ve shown who they are- and there is no going back.

    I didn't know that Lorelei is the name of the movie character, so my first association was the siren Lore-ley from a german folktale. The poem by Heinrich Heine, describes a beautiful young woman ( "Virgin") with blonde/golden hair sitting on a rock near the river (Rhein). She is singing a pretty and "mighty" melody while brushing her hair with a golden comb. Many sailors get distracted by her looks and her voice which is why they don't see the rocks in fornt of them and their boats end up sinking. Lorelei is seen as this evil, "twisted" and dangerous woman who lures men to their death when in fact we don't necessarily know if she is doing this on purpose or not. So the line "twisted Lorelei don't need a man" reminded me of this poem in which she is accused of being twisted and evil even though its not her fault that all of those sailors get distracted by her looks. There is also another version of this tale where Lorelei was a woman desired by many men but she was already in love and only had eyes for one man. When he went to fight in the war all of those other men basically jumped at this "Opportunity" and asked for her hand because the possibility of him not coming back is pretty high. Lorelei though was loyal to him and rejected all of them. Which lead almost all of those men to commit suicide because they were so heartbroken. The other people in the village accuesd Lorelei of cursing them and thought that she was a witch. So, in this second version it is actually clear that Lorelei has nothing to do with all of the deaths and is only seen as a twisted witch because men obviously can never be at fault and the woman has to be responsible for the men's action... I think this fits surprisingly well with the concept and message of this song even though its probably not the intended reference behind that line.

    I think when something is a statement, a meaningful statement, for who resonates with it, you can put aside your personal musical preferences to appreciate the song and video. Furthermore, there's something extra meaningful with this being a kpop idol group's song. Think of the pushback soyeon had to manage when pitching this to the company and the concessions they had to do to (1) make it palatable to the company management, (2) understandable to a mass audience. I'm sure they could execute this concept more tastefully and subtly but it wouldn't land so easily. So kudos to both soyeon, gidle and cube

    Omg I'm so glad you mentioned the fact that during Soyeons rap in the second verse all the observers/bidders are not Korean and presumably western. I think this could definitely allude to the way that western culture fetishizes Asian cultures. Also I think that while you're right about the way that in the scheme of the mv they "advertise" themselves to be in a nude show, and then they show the parts of themselves that they've been hiding because of the possibility of backlash from the kpop community instead of nudity in the traditional sense, it's also about how you can own your femininity however way you see fit, and judgement from people shouldn't hold you back from how you chose to express yourself. They like who they are and how they look, but its not for the purpose of pleasing others, it's for them to continue to love themselves. I love this video essay sm

    Thank you so much for your analysis! I pretty much agree with what you said on the mv, but I think you missed one thing I really liked and I'd like to point it out! The start of the song when Minnie sings "예삐예삐 요 (yeppi yeppi yo)", liked you pointed it out, it is Marilyn's movie reference "Gentle men loves blonde". Which is a scene Marilyn sings "Diamond is girl's best friend". Also from this movie, there is a scene when Marilyn mistook a T-ara for a necklace and loved T-ara with diamonds. And in the next scene of the music video Minnie said, "Well, for a T-ara with diamond. Did you think I'd just laugh? As if." This line is saying Marilyn, or does Minnie, or other women would be just happy with diamond-studded tiara? Pointing out people thinking women so flat and think we willl be so obsessed in jewels all the time and easy to be pleased. This scene is so obvious because we all know Marliyn was more than a dumb sexy icon. She was very intelligent, independent woman and loved reading books unlike characters she had to performs. See how Minnie is not wearing Marily's costume is showing Marliyn is not on performing. Real Marilyn would also just laughed at the tiara without any obssession. Because this line was my favorite part, so I wrote down because I wanted you to know! p.s For more information, 예삐(Yeppi) is like a nickname from the word 예뻐요,or 예쁘다 (Pretty) . Short for 예삐(Yeppi). Its really...only for dog's name. A cute and pretty puppy. Also giving another obvious that men around her wants a pretty figure who cannot speak.

    After thinking for a few moments, I thought of the title. 'Nxde' may be a way of expressing censorship. Since the word nude is often affiliated with the things stated in this video, I thought of this: "What if the reason for censoring the word nude isn't because of the industry, but also how women are 'censored' for things such as what we say and how we act (which can be expressed using the part where Soyeon is on the screen of a smartphone)?" I believe that this could also be one reason why the word nude is censored in the title. I totally agree on how clever this is!

    Fantastic analysis. I halfway expected Soyeon to drop the iconic Whitman line "I contain multitudes." It takes some guts to do this, since it risks puncturing myths that the kpop business (and show business, generally) thrives on. Also recommend SNSD's Paparazzi and IU's Twenty-three for some critical, insightful lyrics and themes.

    A lyric many people gloss over in the song is "Hello, my name is yeppi yeppi yo". The official translation doesn't translate this line because it doesn't really have a direct translation to english, but from what I heard the word "yeppi yeppi" is a term of endearment used to describe the cuteness of dogs. So if you interpret the lyric it essentially means "Hello, my name is cute little puppy" further playing into the "dumb yet cute" stereotype alot of women (especially blondes) are put into.

    Also, about the name Lorelei, I'm pretty sure they picked the name for the character because it comes from a legend. At the river Rhine, nymphs used to live until humans settled and chased them off, all except for 1. Lorelei loved her home, and she wouldn't just leave. As a nymph she was obviously a beauty desired by many men, but she wouldn't be capured. Like the siren myths, she'd drown men in their boats. Until she killed the son of a nobleman. The noble lord then condemned her to death, and when the ship with her executioners came she drowned them all before disappearing for good, probably to find the other nymphs and live peacefully away from mankind. Lorelei was a beauty with a strong will who didn't wanted to be captured, and humans, more specifically men, wouldn't let her mind her own business until she had to pay the only price a woman in that time could for killing an influential man, even if it was self defense: with her home and the life she had build for herself in order to escape. Lorelei's myth very much speaks of male violence towards beautiful, vulnerable women who would be executed if they'd fight back (especially to the rich and powerful) and like many legends reflect the darkness of reality, speaking of a time where invasions of foreign cultures were more common and were they'd rape the women they could lay their hands on, as well as how powerless women would be to the most influential of men. The end of the tale, with Lorelei managing to escape and being able to kill the men after her offering hope and a revenge fantasy to the rape victims of that time.

The image used is actually from the painting 'The Birth of Venus' by Botticelli, indicating that they have been reborn but that people will nonetheless still hold "rude" views of them anyway and not look below surface level (like you said when you examined that scene).

    great analysis. love how everyone has their own meaningful interpretations. One of my own takeaways is some of the members said there are multiple themes this comeback and "anti love" is their favorite. It echoes the problematic expectation of female idols being "girlfriends" for male fans, constantly serenading their love and waiting for them. Soyeon has also said Shuhua fits the concept the best. Shuhua might seem like an airhead beauty to some, but she isn't afraid to break that image. Late edit: I realized there is also criticism on censorship. They included many nude works of art but they themselves can't or it will ruin them yet they still have to show skin as female idols. However there is no punishment for people who take inappropriate shots or leak hacked images.

    adding my nerd take on the shuhua green dress scene: this could also be a kind of galatea and pygmalion moment. the most famous version of this is retold by ovid, who's myths contain the most raw details of the gods messing with humanity and toying with them (who also retold the medusa myth. his point wasn't which god was wrong, it was that the gods toy with humans and especially women and treat them with merciless punishment when they're not only NOT infallible, but horrible people.) in some versions, pygmalion straight up has horrible views on women (which ancient greece was known for their terrible treatment of them). it's ironic because while some have good endings, there are versions that don't. if you even LOOK back and find contemporary drawings of women and goddesses, don't you just WONDER why so many of them are just naked? many drawings of myths retell way more incredibly sexual versions and mental images not because it's accurate to the version they heard, just because most of those artists just wanted a pretty picture and a nice pretty luscious woman to stare at. this comeback is amazing

    I wrote this comment from my personal research and opinion of G-idles Nxde M/V as I like and agree with some but not all of the takes that you made. This comeback has so many layers of meaning which creates such an amazing work to review and listen to so thanm you G-idle. This is basically a list of the things that I noticed throughou the Mv and the general song. 1) The song lyrics, especially throughout Soyeon's first rap but also throughout the entire song. 2) The Hollywood actresses during the 1900s that are represented here: Soyeon - as, I believe, Mamie Van Doren - from what the lyrics describes - who was a harbinger of the rebellious, bad girl style of films and characters from Hollywood (The trouble maker headline on the 2nd newspaper that Soyeon rips), and who was a major sex symbol at the time. Minnie - Marylin Monroe - as in her first scene with the pink dress and men in suits closely resembles Marylin in "Men prefer Blondes" where she sang "Diamonds are a girl's best Friend" (I am not sure about the rest though, sorry) 3) The little details - for example the book that the cartoon character and Soyeon both read during Soyeon's first rap (Self made woman) is a poetry book called Leaves of Grass by Walt Whitman - which is considered the greatest contribution to American poetry, and represents the celebration of his philosophy of life and humanity while it praises nature and the individual human's role in it. Which, in my opinion, ties into the "I am born nude" (2.48 - M/V) line as naturally we are born nude, without much hair nor clothes. And the Leaves of Grass book in the MV also references the "bookworm obsessed with philosophy" line which is being said at the same time. 4) Also during this segment (if Soyeon's first rap) Soyeon refers to Lorelei (a German legend) who was a beautiful maiden who threw herself into the Rhine River in despair over a faithless lover then was transformed into a siren who lured fishermen to destruction which makes sense with this concept)

    The scene you discussed at 17:24 I think is a bit different than you say. She's wearing nude (ha) colored clothing that is very drape-y and is standing on a pedastal. She's being a statue, specifically, the venus de milo statue (sp?), which is posed similarly to how she dances, but has far less clothing on. The big colorful patches make it obvious it's not her skin, but a t-shirt. I'm not sure if this could be discussing censorship, or maybe just that she's being a modern version of that iconic statue. But I think they branch out more than *just* marilyn, like being that statue. The green dress also reminded me of The Green Dress from the movie Atonement (based on a book by the same name) which some people described as being almost another character in the scene due to its importance. But idk if that movie/book is popular enough to be internationally recognized or anything. The box, too, with the museum/auction kind of reminded me of several performative art pieces done in the last decade where they had women lay in a box in a museum (Tilda Swinton was one of them). I also wonder if that box moment wasn't a condemnation of how the western music industry wants in on the K-pop money, but they don't know anything about it and literally can't understand because of the language barrier. They just see these pretty girls as money makers and want to buy them. I don't doubt lots of kpop groups have been given offers by western companies to try and capitalize on the kpop phenomenon. I also felt like that last scene was like... after all the lights are off, the production is done, and she's just sitting there resting after it's over... she's just a person. A human being taking a moment and not performing or dancing or trying to *be* anything, she's just sitting there.

    In my opinión Nxde is written that way in my opinión not only because of the sensorship but also as a way of showing it isn't actually nude , like the hole concept of the song and mv , I think is brilliant

    this is a pretty good analysis! it’s a bit of a shame that the lyrics aren’t very well translated in the mv (which you couldn’t have known). the meaning is still conveyed, but there are some important nuances that are lost.

    i feel like the captions on the mv could've been so much better because I don't speak korean but the last line translates to "the pervert is you" (pyeontae means pervert), not just "you've got a dirty mind." Doesn't the literal translation carry more impact?? i feel like that would have definitely caught more international fans' recognition for sure.

    i just want to add at 13:45 you can notice beneath the sold out ticket a bill printed with Aphrodite painting who’s herself known for being a beauty and love figure. in that painting she’s seen naked only covered by her hair. i think that completely join the nude concept and i wanted to share that as it’s an interesting reference in the mv :)

    One thing I want to add regarding your analysis is that when you talk about Shuhua's part, the statues that are surrounding her, my take is that they are Greek goddesses, especially I think I saw the Venus iconic one. Venus, or Aphrodite, is the goddess of beauty and sexual love, and connects really well with the message they are trying to portray. Venus is usually used as a sexual icon as well, since she had lots of lovers, but still is venerated and respected. Even though history only remembers her for being a sexually active goddess rather than being a powerful goddess herself cuz instead of being capable of reign desire. They turned her a slave for her desires. For me, that makes a statement to the man's view of women and power: “It doesn't matter if she is powerful, beauty is all that goes for her” and that “If women have sexual desire, the rest doesn't matter”.

    I already forgot the member's name who was reading the Leaves Of Grass book, but her outfit is a bit of a style choice as well. The way it's done is a direct (i think) reference to Madonna, who was just as much as an icon as Marylin at her time. Madonna was known for expressing her sexuality freely and having very stylized choices that abrreviated with the norm (as with the cone like things as a bra). I thought mentioning this would be a good tie in :D
