The song made you smile, didn't it? No need to question it. It was the 70's. Groovy muskrats doin' their thing, man. I haven't heard this in probably 30 or 40 years, but it came right back to me. Songs live inside us!

Some of us actually had an understanding of music and lyricism and recognized this abortion of a song for the audio pablum it was. Ranks right up there "Disco Duck", "Ben", and the Starland Vocal Band.

The only logic I can apply to it, is unlike most critters, Muskrats are monogamous, and the male stays with family and helps raise the young. There! - There's my attempt to make sense of it! lol

@@williamniver6063 can't agree with you 100%. The lyrics certainly are a little weird, like a lot of 70's music but not as bad as some of the cr*& you hear today, but this version musically is garbage, as opposed to the acoustic musicality of the America original. But then, music is different for everyone.

Kids in the 70s listening to this song totally got it. We'd been raised on cartoons of talking animals portraying every human emotion, behavior, thought process and action. No one questions a Warner Bros. cartoon about a big blowhard rooster courting a bonnet-wearing, widowed, single-mom hen with a brainy kid/chick who wore horn--rimmed glasses and didn't know how to play baseball, continually outsmarting the rooster with advanced mathematics (great Foghorn Leghorn classic, btw). So why not a 70s mood song about love, all the romance and emotional descriptiveness, all the musical themes and lyrical flourishes such a song would have in that era and genre, and have it all happen between the two anthropomorphized muskrats Sam and Susie? Makes perfect sense....! lol

Yes, I was just a child at the time but as I remember it, they recorded this novelty song to show off just what Daryl Dragon could do with the synthesizer. I believe it was considered very creative at the time. Some of their other songs from this album I haven't seen mentioned yet, included "Butterscotch Castle" and the "Wedding Song (There is Love). I think "Wedding Song" was played at every wedding I attended for about 5 years after it came out. When we bought our first house, I played, "Butterscotch Castle" for my husband and he played "Our House" by CSNY for me. I am guessing you all would like all three of these songs.

Muskrats are a common aquatic rodent found in Texas. Willis Alan Ramsey, who wrote the song and first recorded it under the title "Muskrat Candlelight," is a legendary Texas singer-songwriter who only released one album (in 1971). He pretty much spent his entire career performing in and around his Northeast Texas roots. One of the studio musicians who worked on America's albums brought the song to their attention, they had a minor hit with it in 1973. Of course, it was Captain and Tennille that made it into a huge hit a couple years later.

Everyone laughed, then some banter between C & T.

This song by them was a big hit for them in 1976, but it's actually a cover, it was originally called "Muskrat By Candlelight" and was by 'Willis Alan Ramsay' in 1972, then shortly after in '73 it was covered by the band 'America' they renamed it "Muskrat Love", then 'Captain and Tennille' covered it in '76.

They would ask - do you want anything else i would always reply - no thank you. I grew up (and it still happens at times) ear issues and i would lose my hearing and be down with ear infections. That's also why I'm an elvis fan. Mom would put in her lp and i would stay nothing the words - you can say i felt the songs. The bass and the drums. Started knowing what songs were being played by how they felt. You don't feel a guitar or keyboards. A bass player friend of mine understood what i was saying after he thought about it. Actually he said Holy 💩 you're right. So hearing songs like muskrat love was so sweet to my ears hearing a story about critters - i loved it. This was the very first album that I saved up my allowance for and went and bought it at JCPenney and I adored muskrat love did I get made fun of it even into adult hood? Yes I did, but it didn’t matter if my love came on while I was at the grocery store. You can better believe I sang along. Now the funny part was to call a DJ when you still made dedications and try and get them to play Muskrat love on Valentine’s Day! it’s a sweet song and you just have to love it. Another thing is you gotta understand that synthesizers were really just coming out in the 80s and people that could play of like the captain did we’re just beautiful in their artistry and the captain was known for being able to play the synthesizer so you just kinda have to go back in time and know that he was playing a love song, and for those of us that appreciated it, it came out in the fifth grade we just adored it! Long live, muskrat, Sally and muskrat Sam! ❤❤❤❤❤❤
