Explain an Employment Gap in a Job Interview

My Premium Resume Package: jeffsu.gumroad.com/l/premium-...
If you have an employment gap of longer than 6 months, you will most likely need to explain that employment gap in a job interview. This video shows you the best way to reframe that question so you’re able to craft a strong, well thought-out answer when faced with skeptical interviewers who are curious about your career and job gaps.
There are plenty of valid reasons for gaps in employment; school, taking care of loved ones, market factors outside of your control. So when interviewers are asking about your employment gaps on the resume, you want to be upfront, but also focus on the skills you learned during that break in employment.
There’s no need to focus too much on the employment gap reasons, but rather on your learnings and takeaways from the unemployed period. Once you shift your own mindset away from the employment gaps on the resume, you’ll see the skills you learned, the character traits you’ve built, are all very applicable to the role you’re interviewing for.

    The main problem is that most won't get to the interview phase to positively posture yourself. What you are saying is top shelf, and your approach to reframing a resume gap from a negative to a positive is not only brilliant, but it demonstrates the most honesty and integrity. The ONE BIG elephant in the room is that roughly 50% of people with a job gap won't get the opportunity to interview. Don't get me wrong, I wake up at 100% every day and always have. Where I finish the day can vary - 80% or perhaps 150%. The point is, the tools people need now aren't about what to say during an interview....it's getting one at all.

    Should you address the work gap proactively and explain it unprompted in the "Tell me about yourself" question (and possibly ruin your initial "elevator pitch" by starting off the interview on the defensive)? Or should you wait for them to explicitly ask you about the gap in a following question?

    What about having a gap of 3 years, due to personal problems, depression, anxiety, ADHD, from previous employer being rude and telling me I should not be in that field I they were me, and find something else to do? It took me a while to get through it, recently started taking online courses, learning digital marketing and digital products that I am starting to work on my e-commerce online business, however, I need to find a job to pay for bills. I would like to get into tech sales to get myself in the door in IT. Any suggestions?

    I understand how being prepared to explain gaps is helpful in an interview process but how do you address them in the HR application? I have seen HR templates that put together a visual timeline and if there are gaps, they will exclude the candidate. Should you list a position as "unemployed" and then describe what you were doing during the gap?

  • @JeffSu

    @JeffSu

    It's a good question Mike. In that case I would include a cover letter and explain what you were doing during the gap

    Thanks! Do companies ever read cover letters? When the response rate is very low when submitting an application, the ROI of spending 30 minutes carefully crafting a cover letter doesn't really seem worth the effort if it's not going to be read.

    @@mikesmigielski727330 min is not a lot of time towards the chance/possibly hiring you though I understand what you mean. Create a general cover letter and have that as a template so you only need to change minor things to apply for a role in a company. That way it’s much less time invested A company HR sometimes reads CL some don’t. Those who don’t really don’t deserve you and you don’t want to work for that kind of company as they aren’t that good in hiring people.

    Hi Jeff, I recently experienced a very long gap, like a 3-year long gap, because I was working with my attorney about my immigration status in the US and Canada, I basically do not have the eligibility to work. The end of my previous employment is spot on at the very beginning of the pandemic, so I don't really know what to expect. I did some work irrelevant to the position I am looking for right now. For example, I worked as a photographer and got a real estate license. What should I say to make the interviewee believe that I am still reliable and have the ability to go back to my career?
