You can use fresh start exterior wood primer or really any exterior wood primer. If you get any tannin bleed through then you can use an oil based exterior primer but most of the time that’s not necessary. Thanks for watching!

I just use SW rain refresh for my porch railing/spindles and super deck for the floors. The rain refresh was pretty pricy but was 35% off so $70/gallon. I really love it so far. My main concern is longevity on the deck. I goofed and primed everything and had to strip and sand the wood. Took me a month to complete everything but happy with the results (just don’t look under the stairs)

The diamabrush helped tremendously with stripping the paint. Took some practice to prevent gouging as it’s incredibly aggressive, but chemical strippers and 36 grit didn’t stand a chance. Get a dust shroud for you angle grinder. They sell on specific for dismabrush but a $20 one from Amazon worked well enough.

Again...not sure if you pay attention to old videos, but had a quick inquiry so figured I'd give it a shot. I'm going to repaint my mother's carport walls and ceilings, which are white...and from 1972. :) A bit of peeling paint above a dryer vent, and there are a few cracked spots along the walls, but otherwise I think all I need to do to prep it is wash the walls down. Had gone by SW before I tripped across this video and was pretty well convinced to go with their "Duration" white, with extra white tint and a hint of black thrown in. After watching this vid went to the closest BM store...and ended up dealing with a guy who seemed a bit clueless. Finally figured out I'd have to pick a specific shade of white in the Lustre for the carport walls. Their pricing is about $10 more per gallon than the SW Duration. Since this is exterior paint that won't be sitting in the sun, do you suspect that SW Duration would work fine? The folks at the SW store were very helpful in running through all the options, and offered cogent explanations why of the choices they had available they'd suggest Duration for this job. But after watching your video, I'm a bit concerned this may have been one of the ones you used before and determined didn't work long-term. Any insight you care to offer would be appreciated.

I used to be an exclusive Ben Moore user, but the homeowner price of Regal Select is now $75/gallon, which is just too much. (And the staff would belly ache about custom colors.) The top of the line Diamond Vogel exterior paint is around $68/gallon, which is a lot, but under that $70 threshold. That's now my go to. If any of the top manufacturers allowed homeowners to get pro pricing, they could own the DIY market.

  • @SuperVassarBrothers

You can re-coat fairly quickly depending on conditions. 1-2 hours is reasonable if it’s warm out. If the trim has already been painted or is primed from the factory then you don’t need to prime. If it needs primer then pretty much any standard exterior primer will work.

If the door has already been painted then you probably don't have to prime it. If you do prime it, any exterior multi-purpose primer would work. Moorguard and Moorglo both have good adhesion, so you can do a test spot and see if you get a good bond. If it's not bonding properly then you can try something like Fresh Start which is a great primer from Benjamin Moore.

When spraying is not an option, What would you use for the smooth metal exterior front door and door trim and couple new smooth columns? Benjamin Moore doesn’t have anything like emerald urethane. Does soft gloss leave brush lines and roller texture on smooth surfaces? On second floor it doesn’t matter but on front entry I see a lot of brush lines and texture on new columns from even the smoothest roller. Wish Benjamin Moore would have a exterior trim enamel like emerald urethane or behr hybrid trim enamel.

So Emerald Exterior isn't crap. It's a decent exterior product. If you're having success with it then you can keep using it. I still prefer the Moorglo and Moorguard for how easy it is to work with, and the finish quality. It works super well in direct sunlight and the Moorglo Soft-Gloss is still far and away my favorite for exterior doors, shutters and trim. I'm also quite use to working with it, and I haven't used Emerald exterior nearly as much, so take that for what you will. If you have some exterior doors or trim to paint, then give Moorglo a try and see what you think. I have used porch and floor quite a bit. It's decent for wood. You may want to try Heavy Shield from Sherwin Williams for your concrete steps. I just did my garage floor and basement floor with it, and I was quite happy with the results. Super easy to use, and it's holding up well so far.

I’ve used emerald as well and it’s decent. My preference is still Moorglo and MoorGuard

Mmmkay. I don’t know of any exterior guys that are using that type of product, but I’ll keep an eye out for it.

I watched another KZread channel that claimed Sherwin Williams and Benjamin Moore are living off their name and not worth the extra money. Any truth to this?

That's a rather broad statement, and I'd be curious as to what paint they are recommending. Sherwin Williams and Benjamin Moore both make some great paint and some crappy paint. It really depends on what line of paint you are using from each brand. I don't disagree that paint is getting expensive. We've had several price increases recently, but that's true for all paints regardless of the brand. There are some products that I think are over priced from both companies, but I also think they have some great paints that perform well and are worth the money. Morglo and MoorGuard are great examples. All of the professional painters that I know use Sherwin Williams, Benjamin Moore, or a combination of the two.

@@bradvincet1848 personally, I would unfollow that channel. Some Behr products cover quite well but they have horrible sagging and workability issues in my experience. .

Yes and no. Interior we use Sherwin Williams. Except when they are out of stock (supply issues) or a client specifically asks for BM. Exterior we use BM. The regal select eggshell by BM is great for walls, but we don't like BM ceiling paint or trim paint as much.
