One of the best tutorials on how to make snow break on mountains, wish I saw this when I started painting! Thanks!

Not sure if you check these but when I was tryingto, I just kept getting the other colors on the canvas mixed in! Not sure if I should thin out the paint or any advice?

Definitely don't thin out the paint! I have a much longer mountain lesson that takes you from start to finish, so I'd recommend checking that out (about 18 minutes) located here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/pZamyaOIk5jVp9I.html Likely what is happening with you is one of three major things we see in our in-person classes that cause the most headaches: 1. Perhaps you have too much of a medium like Liquid White on your canvas. You only need a tiny amount (and usually none at all, to be honest). You can see how to apply it properly here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/onyiq9mKqZvIo5c.html Liquid White is really problematic and you'll notice that professional artists do not use it at all - ever. It is made with safflower oil, so it's too slick for most artists to use well and adding all that white into a painting makes the colors chalky, so you really have to be careful with it. Trust me, it took a long time to figure out just how little I needed! 2. Often painters will apply a heavy coat of the base mountain color, when really you only need enough to stain the canvas. Wet paint makes it difficult to get your snow on top and will often just mix in with the underlying paint. 3. or you are using a heavier hand than necessary. You should just be gliding that paint on top of the background color. As part of that, make sure you are holding the knife without your finger on top. That applies downward pressure into your canvas and will cause paint ridges, lines, smears and lots of unwanted mixing! Hopefully my longer mountain video addresses numbers 2 and 3 pretty well for you. If not please let me know. I may need to make a trouble shooting video for folks who are having trouble. The most obvious remedy, and one I am a huge fan of as mentioned often in my newest full painting video (kzread.info/dash/bejne/o5aj2cOMYcmcaNo.html) is to allow the paint to dry before applying the next layer. While not wet-on-wet, certainly your results will have an instant jump in quality and you will be happier. In the "Fall Cabin" video I was using an alkyd drying medium, which is a fantastic way to paint wet-on-wet. You'll see me paint right on top of paint I put on just a few minutes before with zero mud. So there are some options for you that I think will help you tremendously. You didn't mention how long you have been painting wet-on-wet, but even seasoned painters have difficulty with Bob's techniques, so try not to become frustrated and definitely don't give up! Chances are if you let your paint dry and then come back to finish it you will have better results right away. Over time you will improve painting on top of other wet layers. I wish you the best and thanks so much for the comment/question. Good luck on your painting! Brian

Right you are! This video covers what most people find the most difficult. The shadow side is much simpler. There is another video on my channel that covers the complete mountain in much more detail. Check that one out.

You're teaching students how to paint like the student of Bill Alexander. BILL is the originator of this technique. Bob Ross stole this technique right down Bills scenes and dialog. Do some research.

Hi Gary and thanks for your trolling comment. Your comment is not nice, nor are you correct. I am a huge fan of Bill Alexander and am well aware of how Bill does his mountains with the knife. Bob's is a pretty distinct variation on Bill's technique. No one questions whether or not Bob learned Bill's technique from him. After all he WORKED for Bill for many years. Bob modified the technique to make it faster. Perhaps you should watch some Bill Alexander videos before declaring that I have not done my research. You are swallowing the info the hit piece on Netflix, which was full of inaccuracies and outright lies, told you to spew out, showing us all that in fact it is you who have not done your research. Bill and Bob also had very distinct phrasing the further Bob's seasons progressed away from Bill's influence. I use their phrasing in class, as well, because I am teaching Bob's paintings and its only natural to explain things in similar ways. The way they both got us to remember things with their phrasing was actually quite deliberate and smart, so most of us certified Ross instructors use similar ways to explain the techniques. You may not be aware that artists pick up things from other artists and incorporate them into their toolkit to use. It's the sole reason we have art instruction - to pass on our knowledge to others. For the record, dialogue is a conversation between two people, which rarely happened on the show, so you both misspelled the word (technically not, although you used an uncommon spelling) and used it improperly. Do some research. Thanks for your commentary. It really helps my video be delivered to more people. After almost 12k views as of this response, you are the first person who has ever left a negative comment. The joke is on you because every comment propels my video forward, so thanks again! I look forward to having you make my channel more and more popular!

Did you not see your comment? It seems that you made a huge issue out of nothing. Are you that obtuse that you don't see your comment as inflammatory and inaccurate? I'm going to guess that you have interpersonal relationship issues. Go get help. We will pray for you. ;)
