Experiencing Japan's Most Uncomfortable Yet Mysterious Rides | Car-lator and Revolving Restaurant

Urayama Amusement Park
Address: 5-3-2 Ichinotani-cho, Suma-ku, Kobe City
Car-lator
The "Car-lator" is a rare ride connecting the ropeway summit station to the mountaintop within the park. From its Showa-era retro-style platform, passengers board a two-seater cage-like structure and slowly ascend the slope while experiencing vibrations. Its discomfort has made it popular, offering an experience akin to enjoying an attraction.
Revolving Observation Tower & Rooftop Observatory
The Revolving Observation Tower, established in 1958, is the symbol of Suma Urayama Amusement Park. This three-story cylindrical building features a rooftop observatory offering panoramic views. Especially at the third-floor café "Cosmos," the floor slowly rotates 360 degrees via a turntable, allowing visitors to enjoy the panoramic view of Kobe. All tables are placed by the windows, providing a peculiar sensation along with drinks and light snacks. It's a memorable place for couples and families alike.

I work at Walt Disney World and I firmly believe in having family parks like the one you visited today. The older places have a great feel to them. The prices are what normal family can afford. I hope they can survive in this expensive world we live in. Thank you for the trip! Have a Magical Day!

@@MrBROTHERFELDERSo did I! But it seems Mr. Walt Disney meant it to be for Everyone's Enjoyment!🎉 Nostalgic Amusement parks I think would be the Best! Santa Cruz Beach & Boardwalk is very fun. Many rides, Huge Roller Coaster, rides for the young ones, and even the funny nostalgic ones. Put a 10€ ❤in, and let the tarot lady read your card😂 I've been to Knotts Berry Farm (Which is closing), Solvang (a small Dutch town in California), and Bodie, CA (A Mining Ghost town). These aren't Amusement Parks but they do bring the kid back in you. Even Lassen, Mammoth, and Yosemite Parks. Best not to go when Off Season. Hearst Castle which is off of Hwy 1, sits Waterparks are even fun, as some are indoors while others are outside. Wild Moose Lodge in Manteca, California is an Indoor Playground for Adults and their children. It's a Hotel, Restaurant, and Waterpark built indoors for everyone to enjoy! So if it's rainy and cold outside, don't worry! The waterpark is open during the day/ evening but closed during night time. A Gift Shop is also available for souvenirs. Up here in Northern California USA, there are many InExpensive places to stay, go, and do things! You just need to explore-Without Google Maps!

@@maryw.5431 Thankfully Knotts Berry Farm isn't planning to close anytime soon! And even if they did Southern California has nearly a dozen other amusement and theme parks other than Disney. In fact may of them like Knotts Berry have been able to capitalize on the outrageous Disneyland prices by offering cheaper tickets for a smaller more relaxed experience. I love Adventure City and California's Great America. You also have Castle Park, Legoland, Magic Mountain, and Gilroy Gardens!

Because major parks are expensive to maintain, you constantly need new things to keep the guests rolling in. Plus old machines after a certain point become much more expensive to maintain and keep up to code than they are actually worth. Main reason certain rides in Disneyland have stayed is their historic value draws people to the park plus they are a low safety risk. (even then they constantly breakdown every few hours)

It is strange to think that a mountain amusement park in Japan could fill me with so much nostalgia about the childhood experiences I had on the flat prairies of the United States! I smiled when I saw the little umbrella single chair ride. We had a similar one at our state fairgrounds that we would visit every year. Our ride held two people on a bench and THANKFULLY had a safety bar that would help hold you in your seat a little bit, because the ride went up to 40 feet in the air to go over pedestrians, food stalls, and buildings. I was always nervous about it as a kid because the bar never provided quite as much security as I wanted, but my mom or dad would always ride with me and add the extra safety of their strong grip on my arm. 😄 I remember looking down and seeing sandals and hats and sunglasses on top of buildings-the things that people lost during the ride. I always wondered if someone had to walk around after that with only one shoe. 😄 Thank you for sharing your trip to this wonderfully quirky park. It reminded me of so many happy times.

Coming from a North American perspective, this seems so familiar yet so different, the culture shock of everything being accessible on foot, yet the revolving restaurant concept being something I've visited quite often seeing as Toronto Ontario Canada has a quite famous one. It all feels so "typically Japanese", even if some of those arcade games were definitely showing their age and in need of a little love. Definitely something I'll be wanting to see whenever I get around to visiting Japan.

Yeah ... So famous that you don't even know its name . Typical arrogant , sanctimonious Canadian , always bragging and wanting to tell others that he is Canadian . FYI , in my 60 years I have only heard maybe 2 people ever mention the CN tower restaurant(s) and they were NOT impressed. Yes, there are 2 . There is " Horizons ( less expensive ) and 360 which is the rotating one and its prices are ridiculous for what you receive. The only good thing is the view . Also , all over its website it hammers home that you are required to pay at LEAST 75 $$ per adult if you eat there . The last time I did ( I was entertaining a friend from another country ) immediately after eating we received a rather rude message from the 360 booking / reservations desk admonishing us for NOT showing up for our reservation . WHAT ??!! I had just dumped nearly 400 $ on a dinner for 2 and this is how we are treated !? Typical Canadian incompetence and inhospitality. I shot back an angry message with a pic of my bill saying I would never frequent their establishment again. Never heard back This is about par for the coarse for Canadian establishments. Much much better service in Vietnam

Yeah, I wish the US was more accessible on foot like Japan is because I don't like driving cars, but it is what it is unfortunately. Saying that, even though I'm a huge weeb I still wouldn't want to live in Japan unless I was born there. Food looked great IMO (considering what the place is, I'm surprised some people are complaining about it), but those poor arcade machines definitely need some TLC. This place is definitely very Japanese and that's a great thing in its own way. Stuff like this that remains operational and semi-popular is what makes Japan unique (and nostalgic to some of us).

I've often thought, from my time living and travelling in Japan, that visiting minor tourist attractions [away from Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto] is like stepping back in time to my childhood, or like going to an English seaside resort out-of-season [instead of high summer]... in other words, all the rides are about 50yrs old, not very busy, charming in a kitsch way, but also slightly melancholic. I wouldn't change a thing about them though... I'd much rather ride on a wobbly old ropeway or funicular up a mountain, for a scenic view, a souvenir 'fortune' and a hot fresh 'taiyaki' or small can of beer, than I would some Film Studio theme park.

This reminds me of a nostalgic, very small amusement park in North Texas that was called Sandy Lake Park. It had a few carnival rides, a massive pool, a train, paddle boats on the lake, mini golf, a flee market from time to time, band/choir/livestock competitions that I took part in when in band years ago. It was originally just the pool that opened in the 1930s and the rest was added in the 1970s. It really did feel like you walked into the past when you went. I got to feel what my parent's childhood was like for a moment. Sadly it closed recently in 2018 but I'm so happy to see there are places just like it being well cared for and visited even across the world. Thank you for sharing! I wish I could try that melon soda!

Thank you for this wonderful video! When I was living in Japan I fell in love with all of the old Showa-era shopping places and restaurants, it's good to know that places like this have survived mostly unchanged into the 21st century. What a nostalgic look into a fun and slightly unnerving side of Japan!

I once encountered a grocery store in Chicago where the actual store was over a parking garage (to prevent the parking spaces from being covered in ice and snow). It had an escalator system for shopping carts, and this is what this ride reminds me of.
