Exhibition Tour | Roberto Gil de Montes at Kurimanzutto Gallery

Roberto Gil de Montes, born in 1950 in Guadalajara, Mexico, is known for exploration of hidden images and forgotten or imagined stories in everyday life. After immigrating to the United States at the age of fifteen, he became a prominent figure in the Chicano art movement, contributing to the artistic vanguard. Over the years, his paintings have evolved to encompass themes of danger, sensuality, death, and transformation. Since relocating to La Peñita, Mexico, in 2006, Gil de Montes' work has shifted to portray scenes of tropical opulence, exploring life, love, mortality, and the uncertainties of the present. His exhibition, "Reverence in Blue," showcased surrealism-infused paintings that delve into the complexities of belonging and perception, weaving together diverse influences and highlighting the fragility of trans and queer existence.
