Exercises for Scapula Winging and Irregular Shoulder Movement - Pt. 1 | Tim Keeley | Physio REHAB

#scapulawinging #shoulderblade #winging #shoulder
Exercises to improve Scapula Winging and Irregular Shoulder movement.
▶️ PART 1
[Make sure you check out both Part 1 and Part 2!]
Do you have scapula winging or irregular movement of the scapula when you rasie your arm, shoulder press, push up or chest press? Have you worked on strengthening but still have winging issues?
You may need to start working on the PATTERN of scapula to arm movement (your 'scapulo-humeral rhythm') to help sort out the winging through range.
I have 2 exercises that I use for patients who have spent time on serratus and lower trap strengthening, but still have shoulder blade movement dysfunction when they raise their arm or do press movements. The exercises need to be done with a lot of repetition as it's like learning to improve your golf or tennis shot - it takes time and a lot of practice - as you have to get you brain over time automatically using the muscles during the movement.
1️⃣ Abduction Slide - Wall Press
2️⃣ Abduction Slide - Prone (Band)
I also drill down some functional anatomy for you to help you get the idea of what you're trying to achieve, as well as how the shoulder blade ('scapula') moves relative to the arm during above head movements. Lot's of head stuff here but well worth it!

Thank you, Tim, for this excellent video describing shoulder-blade winging. I will be adopting this proactive approach to fixing my body. I've been a bass player most of my life. Due to the position of the guitar, weight, and constant flexing of the chest muscles on the right, along with the way playing bass makes you hold your arm constantly in a lopsided position, I've literally pulled my shoulderblade out of place. My right collarbone sticks out (near the throat) and my shoulder is pitched forward. When I look in the mirror, I can see my shoulderblade is "winged." It's been getting weirder and weirder, with my right shoulder now about three inches lower than my left, and pitched forward. I'm starting these exercises immediately. This is exactly what I needed, and I cannot thank you enough. Subscribed.

Wow. This is probably going to be the best video I ever watch. My left scapula has been pointing out the back and winging out for about two years and has forced me to give up bodybuilding. I must have had a poor motor pattern on certain exercises or something. I also have a forward shoulder, impingment when overhead, weakness on this side, and a general ache and burning pain around the area. My pushups are particularly bad, my scapula sticks out so much and I tilt my upper body toward this side when doing reps. Im going to do this everyday for at least a month and focus on scooping my scapula and keeping it to the rib cage aswell in my daily posture. I will report back here the results.

@@PrimeTime23 Good question. Implementing this and learning how to keep my scapula pressed against my ribcage made an immediate improvement, and when im lifting and really try to resist the urge for my scapula to put away and wing out. That being said, it still wings out quite a bit, particularly in the press up position. I am probably going to see a neurologist and have an EMG test to test my serratus and long thoracic nerve, because I had an injury a few years ago to my shoulder. I've come to a stalemate where I havent made any progress even after consistently doing these exercises.

Real knowledge,God really gifted you..Totally understood everything, but i have one question, when i was younger i broke my collarbone, not fully but i did damage to,it was alright until i started getting older and my body started really growing, and somehow my collarbone stoped growing at one point(is it or not i don't really know, but its curves more to the middle of chest) and that is causing that problem you described as my shoulder rounds in and also my trapezius is on atrophy because of that, and when i try to position my body to se other deformities i see atrophy(like a small hole valley on my ribs on the middle of latissimus)(Or is it serratus if it can be seen) as when i stretch my arm up and pull it away from body, question is is there any way to stretch my collar bone or to straighten it with exercises so it doesn't get worse or only solution for that is operation? I myself graduated high school for physiotherapist even if i didnt learn in school that much due to many reason, professors and me not committing to it so much i still have some sense about muscles and anatomy of body..I would really appreciate your answer, also when i try to activate my chest, shoulder, traps and latissimus i get weird line on the right side of my chest(middle of it)..Sorry for my bad English, its not my native.

Forgot to ask, if for better results, can you do more than one (4x12 series) 2 or 3x a day? or just 1 series is already fully effective?

I will try these. I was doing unilateral arm pushes into the wall to strengthen the serratus. It didn’t hurt while doing it. It hurts afterwards on the tip of my bottom scapula, left side only. It’s a nagging pain. Also aggravates my levator. Do you know possibly why it hurts the tip of my scap? Could my serratus be inhibited? Thank you!

Probably compensating somewhere. Lessen the load perhaps

How many sets/reps would you recommend to do daily? My issue is that my levator kicks in the moment I have to do overhead movements. The neck pain increases with surfing, swimming, volleyball, tennis, ... So I had to quit most of these because the symptoms aggravete heavily after those sports. Would this exercise help to inhibit the levator?

Hey man I would REALLY appreciate it if you would reply to this. The thing you do where you put one hand behind your back to feel your shoulder blade, I get a sharp pain in my right shoulder when doing that. My left is completely fine. It seems like some kind of impingement. Do you know any fixes for it? Thanks for the informative video

Hey Tim, thank you for the video. i find this video addressing my problem, however when i do those exercices the end of my right shoulder blade bumps in my ribcage and crashes whatever is between them, and hurts a lot if i repeat the movement, how can i adress the problem, knowing that imagery showed good bone, so its likely just postural.
