Dr. Mike, I have a question about the whole muscle density thing… there is a difference between hypertrophy and hyperplasia in the muscle, right? And there are some pretty clear as day cases of somebody with significantly smaller muscle volume being an order of magnitude stronger than somebody with HIGHER muscle volume. Even though I know that other things factor into that like motor unit recruitment etc.. But I thought that there was actually a pretty general consensus that there IS such a thing as muscle density… could you perhaps elaborate further on that? Or is that a thing where science hasn’t necessarily uncovered the inner workings of that, or? Anyways, I would appreciate a response. Am pretty interested in stuff like this. Thank you in advance.

There is variety in density between different people. He's saying that density wouldn't give the visual effect that they are saying they want from looking "dense." It would basically have the opposite effect, visually.

You can tell they're geared when they can do 8-10 exercises even though the technique is somewhat lacking toward the end. You just recover so much faster and have more stamina to keep going longer when you're juiced (based on what people who are on gear say, I have no experience here)
@emartinezr
10 ай бұрын
Not really. They could be doing exactly the same natty. The diff between on gear and natty is the muscle growth and strength triggered by this session, and how they'll be able to perform (ie recover) on their next session. Also the pump they get from any session and how their nutrients are mostly utilized in building muscle instead of fat storage. Basically... the difference is nothing you'd notice from just watching one session with someone not showing perfect form or degrading form.

I have lifted weights for 8 years, I am now 24 years old, with 18" arms, at 225lbs bodyweight, lean with abs, shoulder striations, etc... so I'm guessing around 15% bodyfat. Most people irl ask if I'm natty, and yes, I am. I also do a sh*t ton of volume, 8-10 different exercises in a session, and I seem to grow from it just fine. Mind you, I'm in a huge calorie surplus. I love to experiment. The body doesn't understand sets / reps / numbers... What it does understand is hard work. Just the other day, I felt like hitting 10 sets x 20 reps on preacher curls, and no one can tell me I'm doing too much when I'm bigger than 99% of the population and even mog the majority of juicers in my gym, who have also questioned my natty status in the past. There's no such thing as a natty limit.

@@n7Andy I agree. Although Ive never done steriods from my decades of training (16-45) In terms of volume and intensity it makes little difference of what ive seen whether juicing or natural, peoples recovery is different based on many factors. Something Ive always said and the late great John meadows even said much the same in a video. Most people hold themselves back or cheat themselves into thinking less volume and or intensity is 'smarter' then they just accuse any natural making significant gains of juicing because they are essentially taking it easy and not realising their full potential. Muscle whether natural or enhanced recovers pretty damn fast, it's the CNS you have to watch out for when training hard and trying to avoid overtraining and steroids have zero bearing on your cns. And even then relative to diet, sleep, lifestyle and many factors the amount of volume and intensity one person can put on their cns week to week will vary from one to the next

That was DEFINITELY way too much volume for one workout. It works when you're younger, but as age goes up and injuries start to creep up on you, the amount of exercises will destroy you. I have a messed up pec/shoulder from a car accident a few years ago, which impacts how much chest work I can do. I would have to call it quits after about 2 exercises, and they did 10. Your training style (heavier vs. lighter) can absolutely have an effect on your sarcoplasmic vs. myofibrillar density. But that's internal composition and has almost no effect on density, first. Second, it has seemingly no effect on external visual appearance as is claimed. It would be neat if that were the case, but we'd have to see some pretty compelling evidence of it! It also gets whacky if you train in a broad range of reps. For example, Ronnie Coleman should have that "density look" from powerlifting and doing doubles with huge deadlift weights, but he also does high rep rowing and puilldowns for the back, so then is he dense or no? You know? - Dr. Mike

@@RenaissancePeriodization Interesting to note! I had kind of thought that sarcoplasm would inherently be less dense than myofibrils. I've also anecdotally witnessed powerlifters at similar weights and body fats to bodybuilders and the bodybuilders generally look a considerable amount bigger. Which, I fully realize is the exact opposite of what the Tren twins were saying, and I certainly don't agree with them on that!
Would love to see a long series of videos where you review and critique amateur clips of people working out hehe
These videos are validating for me
What are some of your thoughts of the recent studies showing lengthened partial reps being just as effective as full ROM ? seems odd to me

You should review your fellow science based fellow Jeff Caviar from Athlean X

Jeff Nippard, Mike Isratel, and Jeff Cavalier all pretty much align on the science topics. I've been on a Athlean-X program for 3 years and its almost exactly what Dr. Mike says. The only thing is that Athlean is more of a whole body athlete performance coach rather than a growth/bodybuilder focus like Mike and Nippard. So you get a lot more corrective and mobility exercises than straight hypertrophy growth. For example an Athlean program may have you do explosive box jumps some days instead of heavy squats.

@@HeadCannonPrimeidk how you could be so god damn wrong lol mikes literally taken shots at Jeff for some of the really dumb things he’s said
Bro the techno music blasting in the background of all the twins' clips is hilarious 😂
MY SWEET BROTHER, YOU ARE HILARIOUS, AMAZING AND SO HELPFUL! I WILL TAKE YOUR ADVICE AND WARMTH TO THE GYM AND BEYOND! THANK YOU SO MUCH, I LOVE YOU!
Let's see you bring Will Tenneson into the gym!

I would love to see that! Will's ultra positive vibe and Mike's no bullshit would be a really good combo.
They're literally bros. Of course their workout would be full of bro stuff.
We don’t deserve this collab, we needed it ❤
I love this series
Just proves that as long as you have good genetics it almost doesn’t matter how you lift weights.
It's not too hard to envision that one might be able to perceive muscle density (assuming it's a real thing, I have no idea) in videos or even photos. How the muscles morph and "interact" with each other during various poses could give some insight. Dr. Mike's example seems to only consider the volume or static size of the muscle, but in reality, you can infer something about the density of a liquid, for example, by observing how it responds to pressure changes. However, you wouldn't be able to make these inferences if the liquid is simply resting motionless in a glass.

I hear that! Though most folks who talk about muscle density seem to do so confidently in reference to static poses and photographs! - Dr. Mike
The video had all three things needed for a great video. It’s I/E and funny.
