😮 Exclusive: Steven Seagal Responds to $20 Million Fight Offer to Fight Van Damme!

Ойын-сауық

Was there really a $20 Million Fight Offer for Van Damme to fight Steven Seagal?
Recently Jean-Claude Van Damme, the Muscles from Brussels talked about his long running feud with Martial Arts Master Steven Seagal.
Van Damme recalled that film producer and executive Peter Gruber once wanted to promote a fight between Van Damme and Seagal, who have publicly feuded with each other dating back to the 1990s.
As far as I know, it all began when Steven Seagal was Promoting Out for Justice in 1991 on the Arsenio Hall Show
Steven Seagal shared his thoughts on what he thought about Van Damme, who had come out with Double Impact that same year and who’s star was rising at the time.
Anyway, in the recent interview, Van Damme said, “They were having an idea to have a fight between me and Steven at The Mirage [in Las Vegas]”. “Twenty million each. He didn’t take the fight."
A representative for Seagal did not immediately respond to PEOPLE Magazine’s request for comment. With Seagal at 71 yrs old and Van Damme at 63 today, a fight between them would certainly be a much different sight than if they'd fought decades ago whether on screen or in the ring.
But, Don “The Dragon” Wilson and Van Damme’s best friend Mohammed Qissi who played Tong Po in Kickboxer are roughly the same age as Van Damme and Seagal and they have every intention of stepping into the ring. That fight’s been in the works for a bit I do believe we have the perfect venue for it next year, which is an event I’ll be fighting in as well; more news to come.
Anyway, Going back to that Arsenio interview, Steven Segal's comments fueled a long-standing feud between both martial artists.
Jean-Claude Van Damme heard about his response and that stirred a lot of things inside and things apparently got heated at a Sylvester Stallone party in Stallone’s house in Miami back in 1997.
This story first became public while Stallone and Van Damme were doing press for The Expendables 2. As the party was going on, Van Damme and Seagal locked eyes and the action star from Belgium told Seagal to meet him outside so Seagal could put his money where his mouth was, however, he did not engage and left Van Damme wanting the fight.
Stallone described the events of his Miami mansion to FHM magazine, claiming: "At a party in my home in Miami in 1997, Van Damme was tired of Seagal claiming he could kick his ass so he offered Seagal outside into my back yard."
Stallone elaborated "Seagal made his excuses and left. But Van Damme, who was berserk, tracked him down at a nightclub and offered him out again." Stallone Added "Van Damme was too strong. Seagal wanted none of it." In 2010, Van Damme spoke about what happened with more detail and said, "No fight was made, just a little pushing. Because it was a beautiful house. Had beautiful furniture. I was pissed a little and said to Steven come outside.
"I waited two hours but he never came. Steven was very disrespectful that night."
Years later, Van Damme was asked about the beef and he spoke about his last encounter with Seagal and said: "Well, he's a good guy, but he's too tense. I saw him in Planet Hollywood and I said, 'Hey, Steven, you speak bad about me on TV. Why?'
Van Damme then said, "Hey, it's okay if he wants to say things. It's not my problem."
Van Damme, who made his breakout with 1988's Bloodsport and most recently appeared as a voice actor in 2022's Minions: Rise of Gru, also gave some props to Seagal, who last made a movie in 2019.
“The first movie I saw of his, I said, ‘This guy’s going to make it, he’s very charismatic.’” he said of Seagal. “Even now, with his overweight years, he’s got this Steven Seagal way of talking.”
Today, Van Damme says, “I have no problem with Steven,” “When you're young you want to be the macho man. If I saw him today, I'd have no problem.”
Van Damme also revealed to The Daily Mail that he’s currently working on his last martial arts movie,” entitled Battleground, which he described as “Bloodsport meets the dark web.” Wouldn’t it be something if he and Seagal got to finally go mano a mano onscreen. Speaking of on-screen, in the 90s they were both in talks to star opposite one another in Demolition Man, but that never happened b/c neither man wanted to lose against the other. Of course Sylvester Stallone and Wesley Snipes would end up taking the roles, and both men did a phenomenal job in it.
AS far as Seagal’s statement he said I can make public, which was shared to me by a mutual friend of ours, Grandmaster Gary Henry Amen, Seagal said,
“Real Warriors Don’t Tell Stories, and they don’t fight in print”.
It should be noted that Van Damme brought this story up while endorsing his new Irish Whiskey Brand, Old Oak. This story has definitely been making the rounds, so the question is, is Van Damme is deceiving people when he talks about the $20 million dollar fight, and only speaking about it in order to promote his new whiskey venture?

Chuck Norris and Sly both backed up the story, they had no reason to lie. Personally I think VanDamm wins young or old. They both have their strengths and weaknesses but JVCD has the speed and conditioning advantage and probably strength too. It would be a fun fight to watch.

'conditioning'? Ever seen behind the scenes of JCVD action movies? He shows up on set, tosses his cigarette away... does 2 kicks and backs off to sit down and have another cigarette; he even jokingly tells on tape that his cig smoking is really bad and it's impacting his stamina a lot (I need to look for that footage but it's certainly out there) ; flexibility and muscle toning wise he's still awesome! But when it comes to hand/arm speed and technique, I wouldn't mock SS at all.... I just don't think it would be a fun fight at all, styles are TOO different and today they are just too old, with all due respect

I think you nailed the central point of this story with the part of Demolition Man, and that neither wanted to lose to the other. Also, a fight now would really prove nothing. The altercation at Stallone's had enough witnesses to probably get the story more or less straight, that VD issued a challenge and Seagal wanted to part of it in public, but has no problem talking crap in a car. As far as egos, I think we all know who owns the larger example. VD's films have shown him being mentored, having the hell beat out of him, etc. Seagal's as far as I know, he has always at the top of the game already. From the many movies I have seen, I can only recall one loss at the hands of Mike Tyson I think. It also could have been added later with a double though without his knowledge or approval as it was kinda out there anyway. Either way, it's hard to tell who would have come out on top in their prime. VD doesn't want to grapple and Seagal doesn't want a striking match. Any real rules would have given one or the other an advantage, so it's either go at it with everything or don't bother. Maybe someone with give us a great AI match of them in their hayday. Cheers.

I was working on a script for Seagal a couple of years back which sadly never went ahead. The concept was great. The Putin ties (which actually had a direct impact on the script) have effectively blacklisted him. Though what I will say, despite what people might suggest, Seagal does recognise his 00/10's films have been poor but he still ambitions to make good movies. He cares about the quality and it probably frustrates him as much as the fans how most have turned out.

The reason you say such Ignorant things, is because you are not a fighter. Im a masterclass level fighter myself. Seagal has far superior technique, and technology. And while Seagal is overweight.. he can move his mass quickly, and utilize its totality, in ways that Van Damm ..can not. Seagal has dont plenty of Iron Fist conditioning.. so his hands are hard as Rocks. Yes, Seagal is a Narcissist... but, like many Narcissists, he is highly skilled, due to daily dedicated efforts. Watch Seagals clip of him toying with an MMA fighter, in a public demo. The dude tries to land some hits... and Seagal easily deflects everything.. and starts to add Counterstrikes, and then adds in some kicks as well. Raw strength alone, cant defeat superior technology. Most of my training is in Wing Chun. I also cross trained in various other arts, including boxing strikes, and TKD + Muay Thai kicking. I used to spar against fighters that were up to 2x my own mass and strength... and Id completely Outclass them.. with them rarely able to get a single hit on me. This is not to brag. Part of it was my Mastery of the Art.. but a lot of it was the fact that WC's "COMBAT" technology... is far superior to the modern "SPORTIZED" artforms. The more you understand about how the Higher level arts function... the more you will realize, just how dangerous of a man, like Seagal, can be. Typical sportized arts, are like the local Burger Flipper. Where as the high level Combat arts... are like Chef Gordon Ramsay. If you think a typical home cook / burger flipper... stands a chance against such a Chef... think again. The differences are worlds apart... just as Combat arts, are worlds apart from sportized arts. Now... Im not saying that you can be a highly skilled artist, without any fitness at all. In fact, I had a daily hardcore.. 1 hour long, CORE workout routine. But you dont have to look like a Roid'ed gym freak.. to be a Lethal Level Combat artist. These days, Im well out of shape... and likely would not have the stamina for a standard sparring match. That said, my limbs are still conditioned... and my body is still capable of the trained skillsets + lethal levels of output power. And the thing is.. in a REAL fight, you dont have to "Chase" the OP. The OP is rushing at you... so it doesnt take much effort to Dispatch them, quickly. Its very different from sport / sparring.. where the fighters "Dance" in and out of range... being extremely Careful. Ive fought against more fighters than I can actually remember. What I can tell you from this... is that you Never underestimate Any fighter. Especially one that has multi-thousands of Reps / Hours... within his limbs.

I haven't heard about the $20 million offer, but I do know about Van Damme's feud with Seagal, including their potential fight at Stallone's house. Van Damme used to talk about it a lot, but not so much anymore. Van Damme is open to losing on screen, as seen in his past film roles, but he refused to lose to Seagal due to their rivalry. Seagal, on the other hand, has a strict no-losing policy written into his contracts. He caused a delay in "Executive Decision" when he was told his character would die on screen, and only agreed to finish the film only out of fear of being sued and not having his death shown on screen. I believe Seagal's reluctance to lose in films may have cost him a role in "The Expendables,". Segal knows Stallone since he went to a party at his house, and even Van Damme's has endorse him saying it would be good for him to appear in the Expendables. This is very frustrating as a viewers, especially when a hero effortlessly defeats top-tier opponents without ever getting hit. I used to be a big Seagal fan, but his unwillingness to lose on screen or even get hit became a noticeable issue. In contrast, movies with actors like Scott Adkins, Keanu Reeves, Michael Jai White, Billy Blanks, Don the Dragon Wilson. Michael Jai White, Van Damme, Stallone, Arnold, etc offer more engaging action scenes, with fights becoming progressively challenging as they face stronger opponents. For instance, the intense fight between Jason Bourne and Desh in "The Bourne Ultimatum" kept the audience on edge even if the camera was a bit shaky which I am not quite a fan off.

I honestly don't know how Seagal would have done in the 80s/90s vs JCVD. I need to know more about his skillset, mainly, 1) How was his Jujitsu for taking someone down? 2) Wasn't Seagal a black belt in Judo as well (or have considerable skill in Judo)? I cant seem to confirm that beyond a Wikipedia statement, but if he was at the time, that adds CONSIDERABLE game to his arsenal, unless Van Damme takes his shirt off to fight like in half his movies 😅, then Seagal better have some wrestling takedowns. 3) How is Seagal in the clinch range? Can he throw elbows and knees to set up takedowns (or get a wristlock if he's really lucky)? 4) Did JCVD know Muay Thai at the time of Stallone's house party?? If he did, and trained it for more than a few months or especially a year, Casey F'king Ryback is probably screwed :o0 I think Van Damme took up Muay Thai after Kickboxer in 1988, so....I'll hand this one to Van Damme. But if they got into grappling range, I lean towards Seagal

I loved both of their movies in the late 80s and early 90s. I, however, took a different approach with martial arts. When I saw "Perfect Weapon" with Jeff Speakman I wanted to train American Kenpo; loved Kenpo sticks. As martial artists, Jean Claude and Steven are very different. And, in my opinion, Steven's hybrid striking akido style would be more effective in a non-choreograped fight between the two. Neither would fair well on the street or MMA. I don't really know if either can take a real punch or kick. They are actors and martial artists. Stunt performers would know best that have worked with the two. I have heard poor things about Jean Claude and Steven both from stunt performers through the years. Not to mention their actor peers. Honestly after more than 30 years of this feud, who knows. They are both actors and martial artists. As long as it keeps their names coming up in the media, I guess, it's a good thing for both of them. Regardless of what the truth really is regarding the matter. As martial artists, I would not want either as an instructor. Love the videos and insight as always Viking Samurai!

The last _good_ movie he did was Exit Wounds, which was supposed to be his "big return". Suffice to say that "big return" never happened, despite Exit Wounds doing really well in the movies. As far as budgets and whatnot are concerned, it's really here nor there. All the money in the world won't make a lick of difference if Seagal is determined to put in the least amount of effort possible, which is precisely what he does, and _precisely_ why his movies have sucked eggs for the past 20 years. Van Damme seems like a really great guy aside from being very talented. If I was Seagal I would respond by saying, "I really don't like to give opinions on people because I don't know but Van Damme seems very talented and has great screen presence. Maybe we can work together in the future". In fact, maybe today Seagal would revise some things he said years ago. And that would just mean he's matured and sees things in a more constructive way. These guys are not getting any younger so hopefully who can beat who up is not the focus and other things like working together take precedence. This isn't the 7th grade.

I think sly would have to interfear in the fight and say NOT IN MY HOUSE, with a rocket launcher pointed at them.

JCVD would kick his ass, he comes from Brussels so for sure he s been in some fights and has another temperament then Steven Seagal. JCVD also has a temper Steven jusft a big talker no action... I not give Steven much chance against JCVD in a real fight.

To be honest, they both are too old for the real fight. They would probably hurt their backs if both of them try any crazy stuff in real deal fight. So yeah, I don't believe that any of them would agree to fight each other in real fight. Maybe in some movie but not in real fight. Because in the movie the stunt double can do your work for you and get hurt instead of you. So yeah, I don't believe it.

I think Tim Allen is kind of busy these days, so maybe Steven Seagal can fill in on the Santa movies? 🤣

Oh yeea.. Steven is crazy good. Have you seen all the fighters who attempt to fight him and he sends them flying thru the air instead!? WOW.. he really is the best fighter that ever lived.

Back in the day I would have put my money on Van Damme, he would have smashed him from distance with his kicks while Seagal would have needed to get really close to win, very unlikely Van Damme would have allowed this to happen imo.

20 million each? That's a lot of money, but being action stars it may be not worth it, since your reputation could drop and that will follow you for the rest of your career. However, I believe the offer was real.

Van Damme also challenged Chuck Zito to a fight at a titty bar, it didn't end too well for Van Damme and it was literal front page news that he got his ass kicked.

@@aikidoboynj Well Van Damme was drunk and maybe a little bit high, so in my opinion that doesn't really count. I mean, I hope Chuck is not proud of beating a drunk guy 😂

In They're Prime It Would Have Been a Brilliant Fight, I Still Believe Van Damme Would Have Won, If They Were To Fight Now? Given The Physical Condition Of Both Fighters Today Van Damme Would Definitely Win, That Said It Would Be Great If Seagal and Van Damme Could Put They're Differences Aside and Work Together? It Would Be Great To See These 2 Legends On Screen Together.

Both legends, But I still think Van Damme would win in the Ring & Seagal would win in the street. Id rather see them team up for a movie then anything....I won't hold my breath

They would only work well together if the story was like Rapid Fire. Partners trying to outdo each other as friends against the bad guys.
