Excerpts: Columbus the Shyster

Americans venerate Christopher Columbus as the man who discovered America. But his reputation has long been under attack for his unscrupulous exploitation of indigenous people and his brutality - not only toward them, but also his own crew, such that his legacy is now significantly tarnished as one of a narcissistic psychopath. Its unsurprising then, that evidence has emerged of his further exploitation of pre-existing knowledge of prior transatlantic crossings - by both Portuguese and French explorers. In this short extract from our documentary "Codfish Heroes: Basques, Vikings and the Fishermen who Discovered America", we take a look at his extraction of information from dying Portuguese sailors on Madeira, as well as the manipulation and character assassination of his chief captain Alonso Pinzon, who had reached Brazil on Jean Cousin's journey of 1488. I appreciate this information because real life is more convoluted than the straight forward versions we usually get from history books. I love history not for the dry facts but for the complicated stories of the people involved. People have the same basic nature and motivations we have today and that’s what makes the history so interesting. This account seems very plausible and believable to me. Thanks for sharing. Furthermore as an American in the U.S. I’m grateful to all the explorers however it happened for finding the Americas and the islands so that my Northern European ancestors were able to establish my family’s legacy here. Thank you to everyone that came before us for the struggles and hardships they overcame, that has brought us the advanced and extremely comfortable lifestyle we lead today. Let’s be good stewards of it and keep it well.
