MP5 is my all-time favorite Mario Party game for both objective and nostalgic reasons. For one thing, it was one of the first Mario games I ever played and thus one of my introductions to the franchise as a whole, therefore having a strong nostalgic resonance for me. Objectively however, the stellar minigame lineup (barring the absolutely HORRID luck-based minigames), engaging Super Duel Mode, and surprisingly fun and challenging Story Mode are very unique concepts. In defense of the Capsules, the fact that they're given to you randomly is actually a bit of a blessing in disguise, as it makes for an unpredictable and rather chaotic game; you never know what the outcome of the match will be, unlike MP6 and MP7 where even with the Orbs now being chosen by the player, it's still obvious how each turn is going to play out. It may not have aged particularly well, but MP5 is just really special to me in a way that few Mario games can claim.

Yeah, I can totally understand your love for MP5. I mean, my childhood Mario party was 8 and I love that game despite its minor flaws. I guess the reason why not a lot of people really like MP5 is the orbs themselves. Yes, while it is more hectic with the randomness of it all, in Mario party there has to be at least a bit of strategy in the boards as well as in the mini games. But for MP5, the only non-luck based thing about the boards are where you throw orbs. I think having a bit more strategy with the boo huts and actual item shops make for a much better balance of luck and skill. That’s my opinion at least.

MP5 is the one MP game where me and my pals almost exclusively played the minigames and not the boards. Like you said, the capsule mechanic greatly hinders the board game aspect. Thankfully, MP6 fixes the problems with it and is the best MP game imo.

Personal board rankings(I haven’t unlocked the final board yet) Also you were way too generous when grading the boards in 4 6. Toy dream(okay but the blocks are a nightmare when there’s a star on top of the board) 5. Future dream(not a big fan of island hopping boards) 4. Rainbow dream(A better island hopping board) 3. Sweet dream(Good aside from the bridges and the bs ? Space on top of the cake 2. Undersea dream(Standard board) 1. Pirate dream(most creative) I don’t hate this game but I think this is tied with 4. The boards are better than 4s and the item system is a little better but the minigames aren’t as good aside from the 1vs3s Cons I have 1. Most of the minigames are either luck based or button mashing(even though I like button mashing games) 2. Some of the capsules aren’t helpful and you can even hurt yourself by placing them. 3. Battle games counting towards the minigame star(I know this happens in 6-8 as well but getting a 50 coin battle and having it be luck based not only gives the winner the mini game star but also the coin star)

I had a lot of fun with the card game side mode.

there's one pro for og Paper Mario fans and that's the return of the Star Spirits. when I played Mario Party 5 years ago I found the Star Spirits hosting a Mario Party game a pleasant surprise.

I'd prefer losing stars to Bowser than playing a Bowser Mini-Game and it's "All Coins" when its 300 or more and the minigame selected is Scaldin Cauldron.

MP5 being the first Mario Party game i ever played makes very nostalgic for me and is definitely my favorite Mario party game heavily for that reason. While the capsule item system is not nearly as adequate as the items in MP4, the event in the last five turns where all spaces become a random capsule space is the type of chaos that I long for. it has both a very comedic and horrific outcome that is just the perfect blend of chaos.

This, and 8 are probably the most polarizing entries in the series. However, there is a reason that I believe it warrants the title of worst classic Mario Party. There is just no reason to play this game when A: All of its problems were fixed in 6 and 7 B: The selection of minigames was quite poor C: All of the boards feel very bland 8 is likely more controversial, but I personally believe that 8 is a different enough game than 7, despite both being intended for the GameCube. The feel is distinct, they introduced a new item system and introduced some more fun board gimmicks. This is in stark contrast to where 5 just feels unoriginal because all of its mechanics were improved one year later. All in all, mediocre is the perfect word for Mario Party 5

this was a pretty good take on MP5, and I say that as someone who feels likely as you felt in the past, that the game is a dumpster fire. but if you read my MP4 rant, that's mainly because I harshly judge when the games keep backsliding in areas that have already worked. as you said, it's mainly the capsule system, which cripples the board play in my eyes. it's bad for all the reasons you mentioned, though i'd say the back-breaker for me is that there's literally no way to get an item in this game without RNG. you can't strategize without taking a bet on the capsule machine. not to mention that most of the MP5 capsules aren't particularly inspiring, so half the time you're picking between dog turds anyways. also not to mention that you can't even strategize around what capsules your opponent has; the only visual feedback you get in the HUD is the color of the capsule, which isn't that useful. one other thing I would nit-pick is with the minigame quality. I'll agree that it's serviceable, but the duel minigames are pretty horrid in my opinion. whomp maze, get a rope, head waiter, and pound peril have invasive amounts of RNG. button mashers, pump n' jump, merry poppings, and wind wavers are button mashers. i'd be fine with just one minigame from both categories, but collectively these minigames account for 8/15 of the duel minigames. given the heightened stakes of the duel minigame with star steals, i'm not sure how I feel about a ~50% chance of the duel coming down to either smashing buttons on a controller or dumb luck. finally, i wouldn't put MP5 above MP1 or MP3. but as I've said, it's because I have strong feelings over the reckless reinventions of things that already have worked in the series. therefore, MP5 is a horrible mario party in my opinion, as I feel it barely innovated beyond MP4, which itself I feel barely innovated. but i'll give it credit for providing an actually interesting side-mode collection, arguably the most engaging in the whole series, even if a lot of it feels lacking. i'd go 5 < 4 < 1 < 2 < 3 up to this point

The capsules are the sole reason why I hate MP5.

I'm SHOCkED you enjoyed the Story Mode gameplay. The story is pretty good sure, although should've been more specific to the area rather than a generic "Koopa Kid splits to three and tries to stop you". But I felt the balance was off here, especially the AI in MP5 can be brutal even on Normal. With a smaller board and not enough junctions IMO I felt you can't strategize as much there. The VS Space can also feel a bit extreme if 1 Koopa Kid is left with few turns left.

A ranking which places MP3 below MP4? MP3 is the undisputed best game to me. Though I like 4, and 2. I've learned that it's nearly impossible to have much of an objective comparison of Mario Party games. There are so many differing opinions of which of the games are good or bad that it's honestly just about the most subjective game series ever. Considering the spectrum of unique game mechanics and minigame collections among the entries, it's not that surprising. Each game is a pretty different experience.

Honestly if this game was *just* Super Duel Mode, I'd still love it. Everything else might as well have been a bonus. I've always wondered what it would look like were it polished as its own standalone game, or if there were a game out there that was like it.

I think he was suppose to say pro on capsules. I think they were implemented great.

Vicious Vending is absolutely, in my opinion, the worst mini game in Mario Party, period. It lasts about 10 seconds, and there’s nothing interesting going on. At least with other luck based minigames like Chips and Dips from DS, or Bowsers Big Blast from 2, you can choose your fate. VV just tells you turn the crank and accept it. Pitiful.

Con: Bowser Bonus aka Bowser being a d*ck. I honestly don't see why this is really a specific con for the game itself rather than you just not liking Bowser being too mean with penalties in Mario Party games. That is just something he does. With that said, I still very much agree with most of the points you made. I still think the minigame selection in this title is pretty mixed because there are not only a lot of lazy button masher type minigames, but there are a large number of luck based minigames as well. Hudson Soft was really running out of ideas when they made this entry.

I'm kinda confused, you ranked it below 3...and yet you want to play 1 and 3 more, even yet the boards and items are ranked higher in 3 than 5? Why do I have a feeling this is more about expectations, rather than the quality of the games themselves (although as I find out, maybe giving ratings and ranking games may not be the most ideal way to make a review, as what some see as a pro can be seen as a con and vice versa for some).

The capsule machine is a Japanese thing. You gotta check ZoomZike's Identified Luck on the series. MP5 remains as the best MP game I played. Hudson should have stayed the producer for MP series.

Mario Party 5 is my fourth-favorite game. I can play as Boo, but still play as Yoshi. I like one of Super Duel's arenas, Quicksand Desert, because I like deserts.
