Youre right in what you say about the little things bringing you back from that abyssal call. About 6 years ago I was in the worst state Ive been in in regards to my mental health. I was going to walk off a cliff above the town i live in. It was my cat, Bob. As i was leaving, she got her head stuck on her collar. I cant tell you how hard i laughed and cried in that monent. I have no idea which feeling was stringer or which noise keft me at what time. I sat with Bob, got her unstuck and took off the collar. She peed on me. I just laughed, and laughed and laughed and laughed until every tear and scream i had been bottling fell out of me. There i was, still alive and covered in piss and snot. I think back to that moment a lot. The lowest Ive been since getting off opiates and can gladly say that I will not let that happen to me again. There are too mant stupid moments to witness, too many jokes to hear, too many trees to see and too much sadness washing over the world. Id rather focus on and try and bring a light to the joyful things that are out of my control that ruminate and worry avout things i never had a chance if affecting.

I find it interesting that people are against the idea of a Silent Hill game being detached from the town of Silent Hill when even as early as the first game, whatever power is at work in the town, it is strongly implied to not be limited to just the town. The whole game happens because the cult used magic to call back the other half of Alessa's soul in the form of Cheryl. Now it's not explicitly stated that they used the power of the town to do this, maybe the spell didn't need the power of the town to work, but clearly by the second game, whatever power exists in Silent Hill, it's doing this to other people presumably by its own volition.

Not only that, but if the cult had succeeded in bringing their god into existence, why would it limit itself to Silent Hill? Surely, such oppressing deity would want to conquer the entire world. We're now probably seeing the wishes of the original cult becoming a reality: Silent Hill everywhere!

Ive always been convinced that many SH love the games but dont really pay attention to them. For instance.. when given some of thought you realize none of the games story are provoked by the town. The first game is provoked by alessa. The second alludes that the letter james receives may not be real and that his guilt is what brings him back.. not the the town and Cheryl doesnt go to the town til later in the game and its mostly cause she wants to and thats before you consider that much of the silent hill warping starts happening OUTSIDE of silent hill proving that the curse of the town isnt exclusive to the town.. but is more or less attached to the people. The other thing that I dont understand is why people think the town is static in the first place.. There is no rules to how the town works. Thats simply just something made up by the players. So what is stopping the town from traveling. The victims of the town have been pulled by the town, transported to the town and many have simply went to the town on there own. It has appeared terrifying to some, a simple town to others and even a vacation spot.

My particular issue is that’s ALL they are doing. I had no issue with it in Homecoming or any game before it because it was a neighboring town. Or in the case of SH3 it was directly influenced by Claudia. Now it feels like they’re going overboard to just simply slap the Silent Hill name on anything that’s psychological horror and doesn’t take place in Silent Hill. Not to mention calling it the “Silent Hill effect” just sounds kinda dumb to me. And it bothers me that the world in TSM essentially knows about it. I always wondered as a kid how far it could spread. But if it’s like this - then it’s only a matter of time til the whole world is covered in it and it’s basically an apocalyptic event. Which could be cool if done right tbh but I feel like it wouldn’t be given Konami’s track record. And from what I hear, Ascension is the same way with SH stuff happening without SH actually being involved. Those concepts could be done well, but we haven’t even been to the town in almost 15 years. And I don’t think it was done well here. And I’m not even sure if the remake counts. I want a NEW game that takes place in SH and expands upon it in a meaningful way. Honestly Downpour did a good job of that but some of its concepts were… interesting. As for short message itself… loved the environments and monster. Hated the main character and the story itself though it had its moments/ I really just kinda dislike that it doesn’t even try to appeal to the original fanbase and we gotta hear this girl whine non stop. And the worst part above all is that there is no subtlety, no drawing your own conclusions. It just lays everything out for you and is as ham fisted as CW’s Supergirl. If something reminds you of THAT show, run far away.

I think the narrative of this game is meant to be a playable dorama (which literally means "drama"), dorama series are quite popular between Japanese teenagers, specially girls. On the other hand I've heard the suicide death toll amongst female teenagers is quite high in Japan. Maybe the main target of this game are these teenagers girls who are dealing with issues and might feel identified with the characters and that's why The Short Message is what it is...

@@bombastik_bomb i respect your friends feelings but i just don't agree. i feel like the subject matter was handled with a good amount of care and nuance as someone who has struggled with similar feelings and had many failed suicide attempts. i played the short message after last year was probably my hardest year with so much hardship and things going wrong that felt out of my control. i just had an intentional OD (sadly not my first) in an attempt to take my life shortly before the short message dropped because i just couldn't handle the painful memories anymore i wanted to escape. i've been living with a friend trying to get the pieces of myself back together and when this came out i wanted to play it cause it was a new silent hill game and i wanted to experience something that might help me come to terms with what i was going thru and accept it and move on...but i wasn't sure if i could handle it because of the awful mental and physical state i was in, so we played it together and it was honestly an intensely emotional and cathartic experience for the both of us. my friend also has a lot of mental health issues similar to mine cause of her past trauma and we were so shaken up by this game we had to keep swapping controller between us when it would get to be too much and it wasn't the chase sequences that were shaking us up the most it was the scenes of child abuse, bullying ,suicidal ideation, grief at unrequited love making you do stupid things, etc. there was so much to this game that just struck a chord with us emotionally. like i had multiple breakdowns playing it but in the end it felt like a worthwhile experience to me i'm glad i played it and it feels like it was an important part of my recovery which i'm still working really hard to make a reality but i'm getting there slowly. this is just my experience tho and if someone who has gone through similar things as me feels like this game wasn't respectful of the reality of depression i totally understand and respect it. we all have different experiences and i can understand why someone might roll their eyes at the short message because it does seem like it's meant for a younger audience but i don't feel like it's fair to dismiss something just cause it's meant for teenagers. for me even tho i'm an adult now i still dwell on a lot of the negative experiences i had as a teen and the game helped me to truly face those feelings and accept it for what it is... just something that happened and i don't have to let it define me and be the catalyst to me ending my life. it can instead be a catalyst for me living a better life and helping the new generations find their way because i know things have only become harder for people growing up now

The words at the end really resonated with me. It reminded me of a friend of my mother - he struggled with depression for a long while, and before he was about to bring about his own end, he went and saw Inherit The Wind. Through the film, he saw how people compromising their own values, their own ideals, cost them their souls. It woke him up, so to speak. He suddenly had a life to live, because he saw the truth of his pain. He was living a life where he was pleasing others at the cost of being true to himself. He was able to change his life, and became a dear friend to my mother for many years. So, the final words in this video are absolutely right. Not only can the thing that brings you back from the brink come off as "silly" to others, it can also be something totally unexpected, or seemingly unrelated.

I think those that "get it" will get it. I do not care how silly something seems, if it kept you here or is keeping you here - that is what matters. When I was first dealing with stuff as a young kid, ir was the fact that I needed to return a book to my new best friend. Whether its new game releases, concerts, plans for a long distant friend to visit; whether its laying down for afternoon naps with your pets, seeing your nieces/nephews/kids grow - what matters is that you are still here. Side note - as someone who studied sociology and gender studies for my undergraduate, I love the themes of individualism, especially when you consider that Japan is such a collectivist society.

I liked the game. Don't even mind the social media, teenage mental health spin on it. We've had enough Silent Hill games depicting 30 year old white guys. Also, i don't get why some was so pissed by the game not being in the Town of Silent Hill. The franchise is about a supernatural overworld which have no real bearing in usual logic and nature laws. Why would this literal parallel universe be physically linked to an actual location? SH4 had Walter who obviously created his own Otherworld. Had nothing to do with Alessa. But yeah, i do miss Silent Hill's cultish plots. But maybe we never see anything more about the old gods or people worshipping them. What i thought was a missed opportunity though was that the sub-plot was more enticing than the actual one. The ending we got was a bit flat, a lot of build-up, but no real climax. The subplot (what you could read in papers and notes) was alluded to Maya being a reincarnated woman who was accused of being a witch. Let's say that the Sakura creature was Maya actually trapping her tormentors in her otherworld to drive them to insanity and suicide by jumping of the building? One of the newspapers did say that a sleauth of teenagers had offed themselfs at just that rooftop. Another reason why i miss the supernatural elements of Silent Hill, and not only have the "it's in their head" type of deal all the time.

Its like Halo fans. Give them 10 years and suddenly Halo Reach becomes a good halo, when in the past everyone hated it for not being like 3. Hell, most people hated Halo 2 for having half the campaign being the story of another character. These days its called "the best narrative in halo". Fans are just too blinded by their expectations.

TSM started in 2019 based on the interviews released, it was seemingly already finished in late 2022 as the interviews took place there, and just was kept from releasing until early 2024. There's also a few Ex-Kojima production and PT veterans in the team. The covid thing in the story might also be some kind of meta reference, because the game development actually was heavily impacted by Covid according to the staff, with major changes in the structure and story. The original ending according to Okamoto also was originally very dark but he changed it. The book No Longer Human also was referenced by one of the developers in the interviews. Also, they are also making another in-house SH game with it's own team, named "silent production", the game was not announced yet officially and this only can be found on recruiting campaign of Konami. It's listed as an "high end game", so it really seem like they want to do a big mainline game next in-house, as the TSM interviews teased this a bit too.

I agree with you, for a short free game it was the best attempt at SH revival. After playing this I have hope that maybe we can have a good SH game again. True, it was not targeted at us old fossils and this is the biggest criticism towards Short Massage. I liked the atmosphere, music, monster design, other world (although can we stop running through it?!) and the overall art work. Let's hope SH F will be even better.

The topic of centering around the one town in the fandom is interesting in a way, it reminds me of my oomf who likes Better Call Saul for how it expands its themes by not showing only the protagonist's pov in contrast to Breaking Bad, this applies really well to Silent Hill too. By focusing on only this one town, it can lead people to miss the points being made, like this mystified town is some great exception and completely alien, when the points being made actually do in fact apply to many places. It's not just Silent Hill that struggles with the horrors, Brazil exists too.

There was a group of teens who hazed a kid basically until he died they did numerous things like dump water with bugs n fish paste I don’t wanna get into the detail but they basically got off scott free with nothing more then a few hours of community service it was because they’re parents where high paying n knew court officials. I think the game was inspired by the incident I think the bags represent how the kids had they’re anonymity in the photos n also how if it is online a lot of times u cannot trace who instigated the attacks. They also could be like the exocutioner hoods or pyramid heads mask as he was the exocutioner they could embody something close to that I always wanted to see more of Elssas story like how the bullies would treat her I think it ties into silent hill because of that. I had some really brutal experiences on the final year of highschool that hurt me beyond anything between that n everything that followed it I am almost not here because of it but I am still here because of my best friend as the protagonist is she was a caring friend she mourned n cared for her best friend. Very sad story I loved all the trippy swirling effects it’s good this was free though if it wasn’t after the mobile app idk would not be very good…

It bothers me to no end that the reception this game has received is so dismissive; I can't help chalking it up to the story being about teens and girls most of all, which is especially ridiculous when you consider that the third game also has a teen girl protagonist. While I can see some elements of the aesthetic and dialogue are a little on the nose, I honestly feel that a lot of the discourse surrounding The Short Message is very unfair. It's a rather hopeful hopeful story and the ending felt so cathartic and kind, I honestly never would have expected it out of a SH game, kudos to the devs. Also it's free. Come on.

I thought it was great. I would have paid 5$ for it. Was it perfect? Hell no. The voice acting, in the beginning especially, wasnt great. The lip sync was jarring, but didnt bother me too much. The mix of cg and real models gave me some uncanny valley issues until I got used to it. Anything I didn't originally like ended up fine after I got used to it, or it faded as I got into the story or improved. My biggest complaint at the begining was how much Anita monologs to herself. It sounded cheesey. Kids don't really talk like she does at first. But it got much better as the game went on I loved the monster, which was at least original, pretty creepy, and had a direct relationship with the story. I liked the phone going glitchy instead of the radio static. It felt like a good, modern, upgrade. It was a great psychological horror that kids now a days ARE going to experience. (Edit: bullying, not suicide)The repeat deaths were horrible, which I liked. The visions of her mother and home life disturbed me ALOT actually, which was awesome. I'm ok with Silent Hill becoming a 'mental disease' of sorts that can hit anyone. It will open up the series for more stories without leashing it to the town. I have a little hope for Silent Hill

I came away with many of the same feelings having played through this game. I was actually quite surprised by some of the deeply negative reactions to the game from some in the gaming space. There's a lot to like and better writing than I'd expected especially given the intensely inconsistent output of modern Konami. Ultimately, I think as you say, it's targeted towards a certain type of audience but I don't feel like that should exclude people from being able to empathise with the themes, I just think some of the criticisms showed a lack of emotional maturity on behalf of some individuals. Not to say the game is perfect and no one's allowed to dislike it, just that some reactions felt a bit weird.

Same with Silent Hill 2. They literally tell you James is a guilty evil person as soon as you get back to Neele's with the "you are not going to the same place as Mary" message. Let alone that the radio message at the beginning clearly says "James why did you kill me?". Silent hill 2 is not blunt. But neither is it the "deep" twist people have made it out to be.

The fact that it's a walking horror sim, and as you said that it should be a demo of this upcoming game. Lets not forget the Silent Hill Phenomena, where Konami try to retcon the entire story/lore of Silent Hill. At least we're getting Silent Hill 2 Remake on the way. I think in this case a huge issue is the entire "Silent Hill Phenomenon" Thing. Where people see a fog, are just like, hallucinating a fog, rather than the fog actually being there. The previous games CONFIRM that there is a fog, so it doesn't make sense that people get tunnel vision and hallucinate it, with little to no cause for it. The MC is seems more upset because...she has like no followers on Instagram...? Just...Not good... It's not even subtle either, I feel like my hand is being held

I am a huge fan of the old games and I really wanted to like this game, but I couldn't. You said that the people didn't get the message of this game, I say the message was too on the nose, there is no subtext, they tell you everything you need to know, everything they feel, it's laughable at times. The game had huge potential, the theme and message were powerful but they were all spelled out for you, lacking the subtlety of the original games. The main character was ugly as well, not in "not sexy/pretty enough" way, the 3D model looked wonky, which I could have accepted, as you said, it was a free game. Add that to the silly, on the nose story telling and the HORRENDOUS final chase, I could not enjoy this game as much as I hoped I would. Still waiting for 'f' tho!

I have no issue with a game being detached from the town, and in fact, I welcome it. But I really think it fumbled its execution. It had heart. I appreciate it being free considering its length. But holy crap was the narration not good, some of the cool areas you had to run through got repetitive after a while, and by time I was done with it... It was awful. I went into it fully expecting to judge it on its own merits and not condemn it if it didn't feel like a Silent Hill game (and I knew it'd be a walking simulator, and I'm fine with that!), but oh boy... I get that the constant narration was meant to be more like angsty teen talk, but I really wish she didn't talk everything out. And the live action segments, I'm not against doing something like that but it was uncanny watching the dubbed over actress who's clearly not the one speaking. Some of the visuals were again, really good even when at times certain parts were dragging. I loved the whole twist with the mom and really enjoyed the school segments. I was interested in the first person POV, and the theme was an interesting one with a cool concept to collect the photographs and gain memories. But it really feels watered down, and even if this might've been geared to get a new, younger audience in, it feels weak. Which is sad because it has a great message, an interesting ending, but I feel the execution could've been more.

If every place can be Silent Hill, no place is really Silent Hill, I would say. Why setting a Silent Hill in Germany, even nothing in the game depends on this scenarios? The school? It is an american school. The books around? Most of them are in English. Then why Maya is bullied? She is pregnant? Ok, but who is the father? The anime boy drew on the sketchbook? Ok, but who the f**k is he? I don't know... no one knows. Because this is not a real game. This is not a real story. This is not a horror. This is not a Silent Hill. But all of you really don't care. We are finally "playing" something with Silent Hill written on it right? Good, that's the important. 12 years well spent.
