The way this series, ever since its beginnings, portrayed abuse in such variety always fascinated me. It's also incredibly interesting how Toyama, after leaving and making Siren, also still used similar themes, Siren 2 literally has its main antagonist be simply called Mother and she's also somewhat of a metaphor for something that completely replaces one's individuality with her direct will, it's probably that game's greatest strength besides being so ocean-focused and having a stage where you play as an almost blind protagonist.

It’s so refreshing to hear a discussion about gender-and especially of how violence relates to gender-that doesn’t boil down to the conclusion that one gender is good and the other is bad. There’s too much finger-pointing everywhere and not enough people realize that, as you said in the video, it’s important to have a balance of both femininity and masculinity to remain healthy and well-rounded. Great video as always!

Also, with Angela, the "masculine" violence she suffered and is being haunted with is the most obvious and jarring, and every point about it from the video rings true, but it's the "feminine" violence, the blame and guilt she got from her mother, that's keeping her trapped in it, believing there's no way out for her, and it's her mother who she stays to keep looking for

  • @Fragmentsinfractals488

Angela's "mother" is the Hope in her mind she wasn't bad. Her Father is the Darkness, and her Mother is the Light, the Light denied. And if the Reality that her Mother isn't the Light ever reaches, then..... Angela will give herself a new light , a Hellfire. Because, for her, it's always like this. She just... was pretending it wasn't.

I find it really interesting that aside from moments of violence, I think the games never truly have the characters physically interact with each other. And it is that distance between the characters that truly makes you find it hard to understand who to trust and who not to. We always try to read people’s intentions through the way they act around us, but in Silent Hill everybody is distant, even the characters who never hide anything from us.

Muse, I must ask and the question is open to any/all fans reading this: Do you think Bloober will "nerf" Angela's backstory in the remake? It was never directly mentioned but strongly alluded to that she was a victim of r**e/inc**t . Times have changed since 2001.

I actuallly think there's a chance it'll be more explicit, since in 2001 they didn't even say the words or mention the topic, it was only ever implied. The possibility to be more overt makes me somewhat hopeful for the remake.

I consider Alessa, and then Heather, as the avatars of Silent Hill's "God". Alessa suffered, so I believe that is why she was chosen. I consider Dahlia and Claudia as heretics by attempting to resurrect God. I believe God has ritual manipulation, which is why the rituals only result in the summoning of the monster. The cult already has the origin story of God, so why add strange rituals to the religion? I think Silent Hill's Entity, as well as "her" concept manipulation, made the added lore of the religion somewhat true just to entertain the religion. If only Heather could realize her power and learn how to harness it. In my opinion, I think Heather unknowingly created the "Memory of Alessa" via her fear of mirrors, as well as concept corporealism, yet, there was no way to know that she created the monster.

I tend to come across many good video essays of SH, but most of them don`t bring any new info or perspectives into the table. Harry; transformed into a woman because he cares about his daughter and fights monsters, very feminine traits apparently. Thankfully Taken, The last of us and the game Lisa has given us more media with father figures fighting monsters. I still can't get over he refused to make a silent hill 2 movie because he couldn't see a man like James dealing with the grief of his losing wife, I have a few concerns with Return to silent hill with that whole contention looming over the development.

Silent Hill 3 perfectly conveyed the price of womanhood. Heather used to be Cheryl, and the cult's connection to abuse really stood out. Harry can have feminine traits to him, but he is still male and a father. In Silent Hill 2, it took time until Angela came to notice that not all men are bad, since James made her feel that way after he faced the manifestation of her father. Now back to SH3, it delved into how being a woman can be very difficult, whether it's menstruation or pregnancy or being a mother; Heather had to face that when coming to terms of growing up and noticing Vincent and Claudia's ambitions. Either men or women could be abusive or not, it's a recurring theme in Silent Hill, not to mention Silent Hills was originally gonna have this turned on it's own head(especially with the monster you faced in P.T. known as Lisa, who's most likely the revenant of the same woman murdered by her husband before she could give birth), but it sadly never came to light due to Konami's mistreatment of Kojima, and Silent Hills tragically canceled. But still, it will possibly subvert what's mentioned here in this video if the game ever released.

I may have asked this before in a comment to another video, but just in case: have you by chance read the book _The Monstrous-Feminine_ by Barbara Creed? She applies the psychoanalytic insights of Sigmund Freud and Julia Kristeva to horror movies and in doing so examines deeper layers of meaning regarding anxieties about origins, sexuality, death, and familial strife. It's truly a fascinating read, even though I had to take it with a grain of salt every now and then.

This makes me think of the game Haunting Ground by Capcom. The protagonist, Fiona, is pretty much just a child, being only 18. And the antagonists are all representative of a woman's genuine IRL fears. I refuse to play the game since one of the antagonists brutally *r word*s her if she gets caught by him and you see the horrific aftermath as a bad ending you can unlock. I nearly puked seeing this and genuinely surprised Capcom went THERE

Also, all the final bosses for the first three games are feminine, or at least, they have feminine traits like the Incubus that appears to be a hermaphrodite (a hermaphrodite chimera, based on the image of the Baphomet, that's it). And don't forget that Silent Hill is heavily influenced by the works of Lynch, which, present a lot of male violence towards female characters, like Blue Velvet, Lost Highway and Twin Peaks. In regards of the ending of the first game, I thought that Toyama said that the Good+ ending was the true ending and, in fact, it's the only ending on the game that overwrites the memory card to show Cybil in the place of Harry's wife in the opening movie when Harry finds Cheryl. For me, Silent Hill 3 have always been the one that made things wrong in terms of continuity (and not only for that reason).

I feel like this fell apart towards the end because I don't buy the idea of Walter Sullivan being feminine when it's established that he's a violent misogynist who specifically targets women because he was denied a relationship with his mother. Toxic masculinity doesn't express itself solely through violence and aggression, especially if the person they are interacting with is someone they feel that they can relate to, so I feel like it's a bit tenuous to say that his lack of open aggression towards Henry (who is basically the person that Walter could have been if raised in another environment, them both being orphans who have difficulty feeling comfortable around people) does much to support that reading. As I interpret things, Walter is more explicitly an example of someone who feels entitled to control women and use their bodies without asking for consent. The guy is abusing and torturing women so that he can force his way back into a symbolic representation of his mother's womb. The whole thing is deeply rooted in an Oedipus complex informed by a lifetime of physical, sexual* and emotional abuse at the hands of the people who took him in as a child. As it stands though, this is rooted in a difference of opinion in how we interpret these characters, so I can admit that it may be my personal interpretation not lining up with yours that made me feel like it was a bit off-base. *there's no explicit indication of this, but given the fact that so much of the events from the series tie back to the forcible impregnation of a minor, the Angela subplot from SH2 and the implication that Walter's parents may have been cult members themselves who fled the town in order to birth him in secret (possibly because of what happens to other children) gives me the impression that Alyssa wasn't the only person receiving that kind of attention. This is probably the most speculative aspect of how I read the series but it seems logical to me and it also reflects the types of activities that tend to occur in real life cults. You are free to enjoy the series without speculating on this. I think that it makes for a much more reprehensible version of the cult but they're bad enough without this being part of the story.

This was an interesting dive, and a good way for me to remember those games, since my last replay was 10+ years ago. The value judgements on "this behavior is male-ish, this behavior is female-ish" seemed like an arbitrary foundation to get a bit more _analysis juice_ out of characters supposedly breaking type by being being male or female. However, since this was more like a thread to follow along the exploration of SH1, 3, and 0, and not the building up of a grand argument/prescription/scolding, I was able to just go "Huh why is _that_ male-ish or female-ish?" and keep enjoying the video edit: and 4, lol

U still continue to find new themes n concepts to explore ur series has helped me gain so much inspiration for my 3D animation about the 7 deadly sins I have been working n writing for it for a long time I really want to create a horror series that looks like the games in a lotta ways with the textures but goin for something a bit more like Tim Burton in style of character design but yes thank u for keeping KZread stocked with content of this kind I really appreciate it! I think In 3 the confession booth is also someone who is in the cult or church and was basically forced to kill her child because she couldn’t take care of it n that really ties into the abortion thing as well. How people could view it as murder a innocent n that would send u to hell. I think it’s a really cool choice I would always answer yes your absolved of your sin however the line blurs because she could have been a awful parent u never know n that really got u to think for a second but I really do just hit yes everytime however it’s weird how it takes away points for showing forgiveness. I believe it had something to do with claiming to know gods will and Heather becoming god so she kinda falls into role of what god would do thus making Claudia’s plan come to fruition because I think god is forgiving to those who repent simple as that she was sobbing so she showed remorse for her actions however u never know n that moral ambiguity is great but the subjectivity is still really shrouded around the belief that if u abort a soul u doom a child to live in purgatory that is why the mother begs to go to purgatory instead of hell to see her child again I believe n yeah I think silent hill is supposed to be purgatory a place that isn’t heaven or hell but could lead you to either of those if u aren’t carbon

_"Vincent deals one of the heaviest blows to Heather's psyche-"_ that lasts only a second as he immediately backpedals by underlining that it was a joke. This sequence of events is baffling because for that brief moment, he had the vulnerable teenager who could potentially destroy his comfy lifestyle in his grasp. It could have led Heather into a severe mental crisis, questioning everything she had done and complicating her next steps. Instead, all we're left with is a missed opportunity for a shocking twist that could have elevated SH3 to similar heights as its predecessor, all the while diminishing the credibility of Vincent as an intelligent antagonist -- and it makes him foolishly turning his back on an anguished Claudia all the more foreseeable.

How in the world did they view Harry as even remotely feminine!? Even back in 1999 Despite him not being a fighter, he quickly adapts, perseveres, and stops at nothing to save his daughter. How is that feminine!? That is true man though-andt-through!! To go through literal hell-world to save Cheryl... I was actually Disappointed when I saw a mother took the lead instead of Harry (Sean Bean) when I saw it in theaters. Well, now I know why. S€xisism mostly toward men who have genuine emotions for their child (cuz only women have those 🙄). Yikes. 😅. As I stated, I had no idea that was the reason. Well said. Men (or women) are not the problem. It's the culture that poisons the masculine and the feminine. The problem is gender. That's why we must persevere until gender is abolished. I played Silent Hill before I began University, where I studied Psychology and Psychoanalysis. I played Silent Hill 2 and 3 during and after my studies, and my understanding of the later games was deeper and richer than my understanding of the first game. Since I lost my copy of Silent Hill, I never had a chance to replay the game. I might emulate it sometime in the future but my PC doesn't run PS1 games well. Anyway, Dahlia abusing her daughter is a by-the-book example (obviously exaggerated, as fiction, and horror in particular, requires; we might say, converting a real world situation into a symbol) of the Oedipus Complex as experienced by women (both mother and daughter), in which both the mother and the daughter experiment and express increasing hostility towards each other, until the father/husband intervenes (law of the father).

The female villains of SH use their words instead of action? Claudia killed Harry, Vincent and attempted to kill Douglas. And the whole inciting incident of the saga was Dahlia burning her daughter alive. I appreciate anyone’s interest in these games but people need to get a grip. This is over-intellectualizing themes and ideas that are not there. For some reason, SH has a strange allure that attracts all kinds of “interesting” or “unique” characters who try to identify with the games by seeing what they want to see in them. The teams who made SH watched a lot of movies and came up with a story about cults, death, consciousness, etc. The games have themes I guess but they’re all fairly simplistic and speak for themselves. I swear SH fans think they’re in an Olympics that they win by reading deeper into the games than anyone else. These games are brilliant because they’re immersive and atmospheric, and the savants who made them did a lot of research into various occult subjects, took inspiration from other fiction and incorporated real life experiences or anecdotes that lent authenticity to the experience. They’re fun GAMES, not some kind of thesis or dissertation about psychology and human nature. It started with a car crash and a man’s daughter going missing - and the rest is history. At this point, if you’re making videos about SH instead of playing it - you’re missing something. And no matter how badly you want SH to reflect your gender theory -- it never will. The Japanese who made it were cool, apolitical and intense artists and technical people whose aim was to unsettle the player as they explored the world of the game.
