Examining Guitars Greatest Logos with Aaron Draplin
Музыка
On this Wednesday live, we're sitting down with Aaron Draplin of Draplin Design Co. to talk about some of the industries best logos, and maybe one of the worst. Aaron has done logo design for Patagonia, Nike, Target, and Dinosaur Jr. We're really excited to get to talk with Aaron and not play guitar for once!

The JHS pedal show has been a beacon of light for me in very dark times. The intro music makes me happy.

Same broski. Strangely a commenter a while back said the intro music is depressing…. like what??
I'm a graphic designer and a guitar player so this episode was, to quote Aaron Draplin, "...chef's kiss." My dad gave me an original Mu-Tron Octave Divider many years ago. I've been a fan the Mu-Tron aesthetic ever since. Their logo is pretty cool, but the graphics on the pedals (especially the old ones) were so cool. Those big rounded-corner blocks of color had a real sci-fi control panel feel to them. Anytime I catch even a glimpse of one I lean forward in my seat and excitedly point at the screen.
Meanwhile at JHS “Nick, can you change our status to not kids appropriate on KZread? “ lol
Oh man I LOVE Aaron Draplin! This is the feature nobody saw coming. More like this!
31:25 is absolutely true. If you see a stage shot from 30 meters away of someone's pedalboard, you know which pedals are Boss.
I went to high school with Aaron in Traverse City. I did not know him, but we have many mutual friends. Great to see him on this channel and listen to him talk design and music… and community.
This dude is so awesome. And it's cool to see an outside industry perspective

Great collab! Appreciate that y’all let him be himself and talk about the stuff that was on his mind.
The art of graphic design is one of the most important aspects of a guitar pedal that I think a lot of guys miss when they get into building. So many people shop with their eyes, and I find that the more eye catching designs I make sell so much better. It was fascinating to get insight from an expert on this!

That said, the simplicity and uniformity of MXR is part of their appeal in a world full of "busier" pedals. I kinda wanna get a Micro Amp...

I always avoid all the crazy paint jobs! Pure non coated plain metal with no brand names are the ones that attract me. The stupid paint jobs only say that you're probably not gonna get what you pay for! Function is imparitive. Fancy design is for gullible dumbasses !
JHS Show is getting edgy with this guest’s commentary. And I love it

A fair bit moar *Peavy - Pointy* than edgy, but carry on...
I could listen to people talk on a topic they clearly enjoy all day long. The topic almost doesn’t even matter-seeing someone speak on something with passion, knowledge, and understanding will always amaze me
Some other rad logos, Alembic has the tree thing, Moog, Jensen, so many great logos in the musical instrument world. Loved this video.
So when are we getting the JHS/Draplin collab pedals?
Took a post secondary course on media/graphic design and communications. Rocked the first year, GPA 4.2, how that was possible? I have no idea. Worked hard and had passion. But I felt immense pressure from my parents. Afraid of failure and was used or "shown off for my ability and talent". Like so many times before. Second year, I ultimately gave up Half way through during Christmas break. Breaking the news to my parents was devastating to say the least. Many factors played a part in this. Got kicked out of school, and home...never completed my degree. Long and short of this little tidbit, or perspective...is this show/episode awoke some long lost part of myself, feel that same passion coming back. And for that...All that can be said is thank you! For all those that forget or get stuck with their passion, I say don't give up. The world will be its world. Our situations will be our situations. We roll with the punches. The part that you want to play, is really entirely up to you. Happiness doesn't come from "making it", this isn't a goal, being content is. The rest will follow. And if others dig it... Bonus Much love.
As the owner of a Peavey ED-300 (80's era "Electronic Drum" amp) I have grown used to getting the stink-eye when people see it in the backline but it's fun to see their opinion change once they rock the amp in real life. Loved the deep dive into Graphic Design which is more in our lives than many people realize.
Love hearing Dinosaur Jr. mentioned and cool to get some behind the scenes with the guy who did the artwork
I’m 10 minutes in and I love this guy. Best episode ever. Class of ‘91!!
I love this show so much, this episode was fantastic. This is a topic I've always been interested in as well!
Being an Aaron myself, it’s nice to see another Aaron on the show.

Aaron is such a great vibe. Complimenting everyone from the jump and just keeping it going the whole time. Lovely show, thanks for keeping it so positive and fun, always enjoy the uploads team.
Thanks Aaron, much respect ✊🏾 After 35 years of design and branding in the surf & watersport world I greatly appreciate your talent and experience!
Aaron!! Class of 91 here too! and he's absolutely spot on with pre/post Nevermind recollections!
I enjoyed this so much. Thank you all.
This was an entertaining episode. Nice to see there are others that share Josh’s passion and unique perspective in other endeavors. 👍👍
Great show, by the way. Really cool that you're nerding out about OTHER stuff!!!
Very cool discussion! I enjoyed Josh and Aaron's back and forth on of all this. I'm a logo and font GEEK! Definitely have Aaron back on again! Well done JHS Team!
As a Rickenbacker player , their logo is my favorite. Very art deco chrome car script, and was designed by owner F.Hall's wife.
"Crusty ass enhancer", oh boy I need one of those 😄😄
That was amazing. I’ve been both a Draplin and JHS fan for years. I did a massive double take when I saw them on the same screen! Stopped everything and watched to the end.
What a great episode! Kudos to all involved!
2 minutes in with this new guy I'm already a huge fan. If he can keep up this level of awesomeness, then he needs to be a permanent fixture.
That was an exceptional episode! Very cool.
I don't want to finish this video because I don't want it to be over! It mixes three of my favorite things, Draplin, graphic design and music brands! Such a good ep JHS crew!
Josh and Company: One word, EPIC!!! Keep 'em coming! I love it! Sincerely, Guitar Dave🎸🤘🏼✝️👍🏼👍🏼💯
Great episode, as a guitar playing graphic designer, this was right up my alley! Aaron is so passionate and a big inspiration for sure. I think that Earthquaker and Old Blood both do a great job of having beautiful artwork yet retaining an instantly recognizable and consistent look. The Hizumitas fuzz is one of my recent favorites in terms of art (and sound!). The new Chass Bliss branding is also really nice, particularly the Habit manual and packaging along with the look of the new Generation Loss. Oh, and Caroline Guitar Company- love the minimal sci-fi look of their stuff and with the cool icons.
The “daycare comic sans” comment from Draplin was the icing on the cake for me. Great episode!
Favorite gear logo would be SUNN O))) 😎. This was a rad show, Aaron is a wealth of information. Thank you for doing these “type” of episodes 😂
Lovely episode, I really would like to see an episode where the art work of pedals gets shown to Aaron. I really love the story of how Josh started with stamps and how it evolved into a major part of the JHS pedals. Death By Audio, Earthquaker Devices, Walrus Audio and Old Blood Noise Endeavors all have such beautiful artwork. It would be awesome to see an episode like this.
Really love this episode even without a jam ✊🏽😍
Aaron James Draplin - dead set legend, love his work.
Great show, please have him on again. Favorite logos - Analogman (because its rough), MXR (simple) the Earthquaker skellopuss (it's weird), Jam pedals, the Gibson script logo from the 40's and the lettering for Led Zeppelin from Houses of the Holy.
I bought the JHS Lucky Cat solely because of the pink sparkle and the cat logo. It’s my kids favorite pedal because it reminds them of the decade we lived in Malaysia. The fact that you can get both clean digital or wonky analog delay sounds was only secondary.
So much for the family friendly approach Josh and Josh was telling us about in Hate Mail episode /s. I cuss like a sailor, and cussing does not offend me at all, I encourage it, but when I first heard him swear I felt like I just got caught by a teacher in 1st grade lol
A collab I didn’t know I needed. Amazing!
I said space race in my head just before Aaron said it. That made my day!!! Whole show was a blast. I honestly think the current JHS Logo fits. It ain't broke = don't fix it Just my opinion....
Great episode hate i missed it live. To answer the question at the end i think right now my favorite guitar brand logo is the Old Blood Noise Endeavors eye logo. Its simple, can be a main or secondary logo and fit well in many different color combinations.
Great live! Aaron, it's not about pedal order, it's what you want to do. Throw an overdrive after a delay and have a compressor last in your chain. Who cares! Favourite logos in no particular order: Earthquaker Devices, EHX, Boss and Meris.
Loved this topic! Awesome guest, too! You can hear his passion in every word! 😳🤪 I love that you mentioned Peavey. I would love to see a History of Peavey episode. Adjacent to this topic, in my opinion, is guitar headstock shape... Thoughts?
Surprised the ProCo logo wasn't discussed.
I’ve got to pause this to go to work. I’ve never been so annoyed 🤬. Such a great subject and guest 👏👏👏
Aaron was a great guest. Loved hearing Son Volt mentioned.
This was so much fun. I'm not sure what this was, but I want more of it.
Creative Director, President of a branding agency, bassist, here... amazing episode!! I really enjoyed Aaron on The Futur, great to see him here.
I love all of this kind of information. Why I love this channel.
Fugazi was the shit. $5 concerts, always all-ages

Also, best logo for guitars: Gibson '80s logo
The Peavey logo is very space exploration era, late 50's through 60's. Tons of design from that era had spaceship vibes. Fins and rocket tail lights on cars are the best example.

Surprised they didn't really get into how Tiki+Jetsons the type in the Ernie Ball logo is, either. It must be a bit too late-90s hipster 'big bad voodoo daddy' or some shizz to be cool again (i.e. until the fad-masters says so), so they spent most of the time talking about the (rather rotund) eagle drawing instead.
This guy is fucking great. One of the most real people you'll see in these videos.
Favorite JHS logo: Definitely the one with the devil's tail on the J. Don't even understand why that changed.
Josh, All your guests have been both entertaining and informative. But Daniel Danger and Aaron Draplin should come twice a month, minimum, IMO! I'll never tire of listening to them! WICKED AWESOME to the Power of 11² !!! Loving it! Guitar Dave🎸🎸✝️💯
I need to see this guy more often. Give him a podcast!!
The guest is interesting but he won't take a break for josh to respond practically

Ok, had to scroll down quite a bit to find a comment like yours but I gotta say I couldn't finish this episode, gave up half way, despite having a graphic design background too and being super interested in the premise. Too bad. I'm sure he's a good guy but maybe not the best guest for a show.
The Peavey logo is very mid-century modern. It Carris all of the same lines of furniture from the time. And the EHX logo is the perfect logo because it completely captures the essence of the 60s when it was created.
Class of '91 here also, good memories. Great show on the logos!
Loved this show!
Supro has a great logo. One of my favorites.
Another really interesting , entertaining and informative show - Thanks.👍
I LOVE this guest sooooooooo much. This rocked!!!!
Just looked up Fugazi, thank you for the tip. That stuff is amazing!
I love how authentic is this guy!
Josh, did your heart rate go up when Aaron flashed those two pedals at the end? Great episode. Thank you!
Josh, you may find this amusing. One of your hand painted Muffuletta Fuzz pedals is on Reverb for $1250... after a $325 price drop. =)
Josh I am getting dangerously dependent on your presentations. I love this young man in the hat.
The old Guitar Center logo does several things that prepare our eyes/perceptions to read it and to create certain associations. Let's start with why we "see" a G. If you asked someone if there was a G in the logo without them looking at it, they'd say "Of course there's a G!" Ok, sure the guitar is a stylized "G", but it also appears to obscure the G of guitar, while also overlapping the U, I, and T. That overlap prepares us for the G to be hidden. But there is second set of overlaps that help train our perceptions. In the word "Center": the C looks like an O that is overlapped by the E. Even more subtly, the T in center is overlapped by the A in guitar above it. Subconsciously, we see several layers. Farthest back there is an "O", then "enter", then "guitar" with a hidden G, and finally the guitar itself is the foreground layer. What does this layering do? It makes GUITAR the primary focus. If the object is foremost, so is the word in our minds. We see a guitar and we think "guitar" and then we see the letters "uitar" and think "guitar". The G is in our minds because of the object in the foreground. In essence, the word "guitar" is repeated by our perceptions: first the object, then the word "guitar", doubled for emphasis, therefore it is, in a way, louder. But, why an O turned into a C by an overlap? It's not just an O, but a circle. A circle is a perfect shape and has a precise center. Further, we use circles to indicate a specific point or place, the "center" of attention or focus. The circle implicitly emphasizes that Guitar Center is the center of the guitar universe. Why is the circle overlapped? The word overlapping the circle is "enter". See how the E is "entering" the circle to create the C? Guitar Center's logo is inviting us to enter the center of the guitar universe. If you want a guitar or guitar related gear, where are you going to go?
I absolutely love this guy ! Man Great dude ! Butch Walker said after he lost all of his vintage equipment during a house fire ? That he realized that he shouldn’t be so precious about vintage equipment. He says there are plenty of great value pedals out … hence … Ruby Red!!! 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻which by the way . I love the red sparkle paint and graphics on my Ruby red pedal … it’s awesome!
TIL about Fugazi from this video and I am happy about that. I was a freshman in high school when the historical summer of music happened. 1991 was amazing because of Blood Sugar Sex Magik, Nevermind, Ten, Badmotorfinger, Use Your Illusion I, and Metallica but for some reason Fugazi wasn't played in my area.

I LOVE my field notes! So cool to have him on!
Aaron is a boss, this guy rules! ♥️
Peavey logo looks to me like it should be on a rotating neon sign over a drive-in restaurant, so learning it was designed by a kid in the 1950s makes sense.
Fantastic! Great Show. Great design is so inspirational. I also love that you got through all the F bombs Josh! HAHA!
Love the Justin Seed Co. hat that you flipped by in the book. I'm from Justin, TX...That's definitely not a brag.
Thank you for this! 🙏🤘

Fugazi!? OMG I need to get to know this dude lol.
Finally someone in the room who talks like life is. Proof that you can swear and be sincere and it’s perfectly fine, no one gets hurt. Seriously, sometimes I have to leave when Addison (who is quite possibly the nicest person on the planet) starts talking with Nick about their sodas and it’s sooo tangy oooh mines a touch tart but I like it ooh can I try ooh can someone stab me in the ears. I shake my head at how un-black tshirt rocknroll this show is, but, it’s so welcoming we all gather round anyway. Just good work all round jhs show. Chur.
As graphic designer I deeply appreciate this episode. Also I'm for some time now noticing some connection between music and graphic design. I don't know what it is but I know number of people who are musicians and graphic designers. You as well mention graphic design and typography aspects of music gear quite freqently on this channel.
That record collection is nothing short of epic.. reminds me of the library in Beauty and the Beast.. lmao
On this note: went to Guitar Center today. The logo on their bank card reader and the front of the building were the old ones. The logo on the sign out at the street was a the old one with a regular G stuck on it. Consistency is everything in branding, but I’m sure the cost of updating (especially during a pandemic/downturn) is prohibitive. Funny thing is, I had never noticed this change, and I used to design for E-mu Systems back in the 90s.
I have so many Field Notes notebooks. Did not expect that to come up in this conversation.
I graduated in 1991 too. Good times.
An hour in I love him even more!
Only thing you need to know about Boss pedals; Prince who had demanding tastes for the sounds he made, could've played effects from anyone, and if you Google his pedalboard over the decades, what pedal brand DOMINATED it by a massive margin? BOSS!!
I missed the Live as usual, watching the replay. This dude's book is cool, and I want it because I love logo work, it's an unrecognized talent how a logo can make something even more cool than it was beforehand. He is also playing a serious game of Booger Hockey, and the booger is winning. Cue Addison's MLG horn sound/stinger... Booger: 1 / Aaron: 0 🔊🎺🎵
It was okay to be 347th and do it with your friends! WOW! ... Hope I can use that Aaron ... Inspiring AF!
Two good things in my world crashing together! Awesome
Wow, I really dig Aaron! MORE!
Gotta give love to the robust Flaming Lips section
this was a great listen

I know they are not strictly guitar logos but I truly love the old-school tube manufacturers like RCA, Telefunken, GE, Sylvania etc.
