I was more upset that I wasn't even aware of it all these years...ironically it was Tokyo Xanadu that made me aware of Nihon Falcom and their Trails and Ys games and the rest is history.

Ys 8 is sale on Switch like 3 days ago. And I've been hesitating on getting it because I have other game to purchase(FFXII:TZA), and also limited budget. Also, I knew that the physical copy of this is pretty hard to come by and possibility of being on sale again on eshop is unlikely. So, in the end I bought it, the best decision of my life, managed to grab FFXII:TZA too! I'm satisfied for now.

Would I recommend this series to everyone? Ys I would. Is it criminally underrated? Ys it is.

@@lilmister ​ Actually there are 2 Remakes of Ys 1 and 2. The first one being the Turbografix 16 version and the other one is the windows version called Ys Complete and Chronicles (These ones just differ in arstyle). The only difference is how the beginning of the story is presented. Original Ys 1 versions, they throw you at the town without explanation. The Turbografix 16 version, the story is narrated and it looks incredible for a videogame system of the 90s. The Complete/Chronicles versions they have mini cutscenes plus a different city where you start the game. Independently which one you choose they are basicly the same game, just how the story starts is different and some aspects of what happens along the journey. But really they are the same game. That only depends on how you like the games to look, if you like the retro aspect or the modern one and there are different versions to play, PC 88, Sega Master System, Famicom, PSP, PS2, Steam, Sega Saturn, but take note some of these versions are just in Japanese while others are international.

@@lilmister also for what it's worth the Ys Books I&II chronicles remake is the version of the story that is considered canon in the modern franchise, so if you have a thing for cross game continuity, the chronicles remake (which can be gotten on steam) is the one to play.

And not only that, but the first version was for the PC-88, while the shown CD cover is the Sega Master System port from 1988, which is a very different version of the game again.

This might be the first Game series I will go back in time slowly to play previous entries for. This thing snagged me the minute I picked up YS VIII, and now that I've left the city in YS IX, the adventure and the badass music is happening all over again.

Dude the 1987 game on SMs don't look like that at all. This is a remake.

You're right, but you know the SMS version is just one of many many ports, right? The original version was a PC-88 game (it looked even more primitive than the SMS version).

Looks like the Ys MMO is no longer around. Guess that's one I'll never get to play. Ys IX is going to be awesome.

Memories of Celceta is a remake of both Mask of the Sun and Dawn of Ys. Both games released in 1993 but was outsourced to different developers due to internal restructuring as Nihon Falcom was siphoned out of developers at the time.

I appreciate the effort but this is a mess. it uses the remakes for Ys I and II, includes all three versions of Ys IV, completely forgot about Felghana and the choices in what to show are weird to put it kindly.

That Ys crossover fighting game looks pretty fun

You start by 1987, but you are showing footage of the remake ^^'

who the hell forgets oath...it's one of the best y's games.

@@zephyrias I would rate YS 8 higher than 9 due to reasons stated above & cause Dana is one of the best female characters of all time for me. The story is not that complicated but you might not understand what's going on when Adol is having his "dreams". I didn't play the demo but if they do just drop you in the dungeon, then I guess they just want you to test the gameplay. The story doesn't start in the dungeon, it starts on a ship. Would highly recommend playing YS 8 first instead of YS 9 (there's also some stuff from YS 8 referenced in YS 9 so its better to play 8 first)

The game didn't look anything like that in 1987. The Sega Master System was really primitive. It wasn't until Ys: Book 1 & 2 came out on TurboGrafx-CD did the game shine. It was the first game ever to have a true Redbook CD OST, animated cut scenes, and voice acting. Yeah but... Ys Book 1 & 2 are "just" a remake from Hudson... Why showing it over the, i don't know, horrible X68000 version ? Just because people in USA liked it because they had access to it ? It's a bit strange isn't it ? The first version are the PC-88 so it would be best to show that version first in my opinion... And then after... Well... If they don't show the PC Engine CD version i couldn't really blame them, they are so much version of Ys I & II...

That said, this series is SO confusing with countless remakes, brain scrambling timelines, different names for different regions and whatnot that the original might have been there somewhere. Oath in Felghana was also not there, but somebody said it was under another title... It's so confusing I'm not even trying to understand it. In my honest opinion, Memories of Celceta was one of the best Ys games so far. It should have been here i order to show the evolution of this series during all these years as a whole. It looks a lot like Seven too, so I guess that's why it was not there. Although, Seven is a bit better game still in my books. I must go play those older games at some point. Or their remakes, I don't even know anymore, lol. 😅

NGL, because of the colosseum side-quest, I thought that Dogi would be playable for a short time

Jogo JRPGs desde 1999 (FFVII, Wild Arms e Breath of Fire 3 foram os primeiros que joguei). Mas só conheci a série Ys em 2014 com Ys: The Oath in Felghana (acho que é um remake do Ys 3). Me apaixonei pela série. Depois joguei Ys VI: The Ark of Napshtim, Ys Origin, Ys Seven e Ys: Memories of Celceta. Gostei de todos, mas o The Oath in Felghana foi o melhor na minha opinião. Assim que conseguir um tempo, vou jogar o elogiadíssimo Ys: Lacrimosa of Dana. Apesar de faltarem alguns jogos da série nesse vídeo, é uma excelente compilação.

Good to see a summary of that series. Only one that caught my interest was Ys 6. Maybe it'll get a port or sth. alike. Never knew Ys Online existed but I guess it got shut down since 2009? It's been a while since back then. Loved 8, Looking forward to the PS4 Celceta Remaster. But the chosen world of Ys9 in this video looks so empty and unfinished ... Was that early production footage or is Ys9 a lot emptier than the more detailed 8? ...

I beat ys 6 a couple of months ago and watching a clip of it on youtube makes me already feel nostalgic. The music does a good job of portraying that feeling. Music is legendary.

This series is old has Legend of Zelda and little people know about it

Bad video... Don't tell it's 1987 while showing the Master Sytem version, made by Sega one year and a half later. Same could be said with Ys II.. Why the MSX2 version ? Do you take those picture randomly ? The first version are on PC-88 or maybe Sharp X1 but it's much rare to find so... Show what Ys looked like at this moment ! There is a LOT of difference between the original release of Ys I and the remake Ys Eternal ( yeah, Ys Eternal and Ys Complete ARE different but granted, nobody care) so please show those two as separate release or i don't understand what's the point of this video ! I mean, someone who don't know Ys see amazing visual for Ys I & II and for Ys IV BAM, everything is worst. That's so strange ! I do understand that you don't want to show remakes because Ys have way too much of them but... Really, Oath in Felghana and especially Memories of Celceta deserves to be here... Only the scenario is the same for Oath and Memories just takes a canon spot in the chronology.

So Ys basically evolved from a platformer into a full fledged arpg. I kind of wished they would do the same with Zelda.

Started off with ark of napishtim completely by chance because I liked his red hair. I’ve been a fan ever since. Beat 7 8 and currently on 9

Personally, I still enjoy Ys VI. I still have my copy and occasionally pop it in and play a bit of it.

Can’t wait until Ys 10 comes out

Minus points for showing remakes instead of original releases.

Ys IX had music from Ys VIII. Personally, after playing Ys VIIi and IX, I don't think I could play any of the previous games. VIII and IX are just too action packed and action oriented.

I mean, Ys Origin is more action packed than Ys VIII and Ys IX. They have tons of dialogues... while Ys Origin is mostly action, and dialogues are done in small doses.

My Favorite is Ys7 when i was a kid and i forgot the name of it i thought the title was Flax becausr that is what Adol is saying but when my brother found it then put it in my PPSSPP i already finished it with in 3 days with no walkthrough.

For the retro I really like the YS:III I think I was 7 when I first played this game.. had a hard time finding the title on youtube because I forgot the title and its in JP language. I still like it and probably willing to play the series on PC if possible. I'm going to finish watching the YS:III game play in english to undestand the story. 😂 I just slash everything in Japanese release.

Between Ys Vs and Ys VIII... Very different

I've been playing 8, and really enjoying it. I've wondered about the other Vita games, but I think I'm gonna wait until there's a sale. I'm really glad I didn't play the classics, it looks like you're just bumping into the enemies. I've found an English translation of 4, but it uses lots of memory, and most of that is used for the animated cutscenes. I'll stick with 8, it's really awesome.

Yep, missing the Ys 3 and 4 remakes that go by different names.

Could've used the original versions of I and II maybe comparisons of the PC-88/98 versions with the NES versions of I and II as well as the NES and Super NES versions of Wanderers and footage from The Oath in Felghana and Memories of Celceta.

Ys VIII as well as the soon to be released Ys IX are on the PS4 along with other Ys games. They can be played in any order, so you could make any Ys game your starting point.

I find it funny that they just skipped over Memories of Celecta

Where is Celceta? Remakes don't represent the original graphics of the first release either.

Main selling point is the combat gameplay, I've been on a marathon run through the seies and watched it evolve, Ys 8 is probably the only game where story actually becomes compelling. Ultimately it having a small budget makes it unable to stand out vs, series like Final Fantasy etc.

Wanna get into this series but the running into enemies battle systems are lame. Maybe I’ll just give them a miss. I’ve tried it several times, it’s just not good. But at least it’s not Hydlide bad.
