Hate to be such a dick but 5:25 due to lack of clarity I do not know if you mean directional based bump combat or regenerating health on grass was implemented first in Ys. Not a bump combat master so I cannot comment on bump combat implementation but healing on grass was used in Hydlide in '84 which was a huge hit in the Japanese computer scene. Due to my ignorance of early eighties PC engine games, I do not know sitting on grass was a mechanic before Hydlide; ala dragon slayer etc.

Seems my sources were inaccurate on who did it first. Further research does indicate Hydlide was the first to do it. Thanks for letting me know.

Bump combat was too hard for me. I'm too use to just tapping a button to attack. I played the game on the easiest mode and couldn't even get pass the first monster, let alone the first boss. Kudos to those who can play it so well haha

@@thenoodlehunter6828 First boss is a doozy just grind up one level more then you came into the fight with and you will find it gets a lot easier. Guides will tell you what level you should be at, if you are having trouble. Due to the level scaling the fight while one of the harder ones can be really easy if over leveled and it is easy enough to grind to that point. Just push yourself with the fight and you won't experience another difficulty spike until you run into YOGLEKS & OMULGUN who made me go numb with frustration on Nightmare mode. Part of the appeal (of high level Ys play) is the immense satisfaction upon beating a boss you have been working on for over an hour. I you don't feel that emotional high, don't bother doing hard/nightmare runs.

Enjoyed the video but a heads up - The 1st appearance for the game in the west was Ys I on the Sega Master System, then Ys Book I & II on the Turbografx-16 in 1989. I point this out because alot of folks will argue the TG-16 version is the definitive version - it certainly was for me growing up, and the music from that version is still the best.

"It's not the deepest story" I'd say that's selling the two games short :D For how short they are, the world building alone is incredibly dense here (actually made even better in hindsight, if you played other games, especially Origins). What makes these stories so fascinating is the whole in-universe mythology behind it all. Where mundane stuff like metal ore (the Cleria Ore) or fruit (The Rhoda Fruit) actually have quite a chunk of lore behind them. It's just not presented with bells and whistles and hours of exposition. Much like the Bump combat system, it's straight to the point, simple yet effective and without many detours. Anyways, fantastic video! Great choice of footage, depicting different versions of the game, the narration was on point, really enjoyed it :D

  • @CommRio

Thanks Maverick! When I say it's not the deepest story I definitely don't mean to disparage the story, which is tightly written and shown (a trait some modern games epicly fail at). As you said the game, out of necessity for the limitations of the time, is very straight to the point.

And i've had the feeling that some games like FFIV wouldn't be as sucessful story wise now , along with many others as we've had 30ish years of games so what was once groundbreaking, is cliche :> though it's still important in ow they are told. Just in case somebody couldn't get into these games, the DS ports use a more standard fighting system with an attack button and even solve the problem of not knowing how to advance by having what your current objective written. It doesn't literally just tell you what and how to do it like handholding, but it just says what the current objective is like in a single line of text, so you don't get lost.

Either that or I had already played it and so I kind of knew where to go and what to do. Honestly I'm playing oath now and it's frustrating compared to even origins. And the Ys 1 and 2 are totally different. Different engine, everything is different. It depends on why you like the new games. I tried a little bit of celceta first before trying Ys 1. And Ys 1 captivated me much more. I put celceta aside to play in a more chronological order but Ys 1 and 2 really grabbed me, it justified my decision and made it easy. In some ways the newer one(4/celceta) is somewhat more typical, a bit more filler filled. But it has some uniqueness like the massive overworld, and exploring that. I haven't played 8. I think Ys 1 and 2 are great games, and together it's a meaty game. So I think it's worth trying. So it depends why you want to play. Oath is frustrating, Ys 1 especially has more lenient aspects. Y2 kinda does too (but less, halfway through there's less healing areas for some stretches, and the healing cloak is well hidden. Only an enemy tells you about it and not very much). If what you liked in later games is all the talking, then no. But Ys origins, 1, and 2 build on each other to have a very mythic kinda story. It's classical. But they all build. Especially origins, which does have a lot of talking. Ys 1 is like a mystery and learning about everything. The dialogue can be funny from NPCs. And later you can talk to every demon in the game. And there's more dialogue in 2 as well.

That being said, I also had to check some walkthrough at some points because some stuff was just really obscure... (also FUCK SOLOMON SHRINE, FUCK THIS PLACE IN PARTICULAR, if there's something I don't miss from old games it's really that maze like layout that doesn't make any sense holy shit lol) Another cool thing about the soundtrack is that you can also choose between which version to listen, that was a nice touch and I really looped through the 3 versions constantly.

I think the real meat is figuring out what to do. And you'll do a disservice to yourself if you play this game with a guide. That said some things are bullshit. Some are bullshit and some are archaic bullshit. So only use a guide as a last resort... Look up how to get the free items in Ys 1, and at least be aware that the cloak of healing is in the ice ridge in 2. But it almost feels like a detective game and most of it is very doable without a guide. No wonder it took so little when he mentioned the playtime. For me the first game was like 9+ hours. And the second was somewhere like 12-14 or 15 hours. The way the story is told in the first game is like a mystery. Second game is about ending it, revelations, and assaulting the demons. By the end the demons are terrified of Adol. Definitely a game/games worth playing. Getting used to bump is strange at first. But once you understand it, it's awesome, really second nature. It's like someone has the attack button on turbo and it's automatic. You're jump is to aim adol correctly in the first one. In the second, you can go wild. Also tip if you haven't played. Until you get a sword from the first town to the second, don't bother even trying to fight. I actually did manage to kill some enemies without a sword but it's not worth it. A waste of time. You can get a free sword by talking to people and then going back to one of the three main NPCs in the first town but that might not be worth it either. I didn't know about it till after. If you wanna save money, do it. But you can also just go straight to the second town, dodging enemies. Edit: here's another tip... You can charge magic. I didn't know till the Zava fight. Other games have it but this game never mentioned it as far as I know.
