The 76 Winchester in 50-90 was popular with the British. They used them in Africa and India, known as cat guns. Also, Teddy Roosevelt killed a 1000 pound grizzly bear with his 1876 Winchester in 45-75 and it was his favorite of all of his Winchester rifles. 👍

Was there a short rifle version in mod 1866? I know the 1866 was build in 2 calbers 44henry rf and 44 henry cf. Shortly i saw at a shop an antique one advertised in 44/40. The shop owner claimed it was a special production for the french army. Or was he wrong and it was a 44 henry cf?

Often carried on horseback, either in a leather scabbard or horizontally across the front of the saddle just behind the swell. Some of the Henrys were equipped with sling swivels so you could carry them on your shoulder or indeed strapped across your back.

I was watching a western, with Tom Selleck. He bought an 45-70, before the gunfight he loaded it with 45-60 is that possible? The diameter seems like it would be the same. Is this movie BS?

A bit out of my wheelhouse, but I find sources that say the .45-60 would chamber and fire in a .45-70 rifle. Accuracy might suffer due to the distance between the end of the bullet and the start of the rifling. But it would work just as a .38 Colt or .38 Special will fire in a .357 Magnum revolver. Of course the .45-70 would not chamber in a .45-60 firearm. I always recommend using only the ammunition for which the gun is chambered. But in pinch, necessity is the mother of invention. In his classic book Sixguns, Elmer Keith tells the story of a couple of kids who were kidnapped and forced to work for a bandit. He took the ammunition for their .44-40 Colt but let them keep the gun. They found a .38-40 live cartridge, wrapped it paper so it was solid in the charge hole, and shot the bad guy. I take many of Elmer's stories with a grain of salt.😉

@@wsmvolunteers8588 Thanks, I heard a story about Daniel Boone when he was Indian captive. They let him hunt with a rifle before his escape. It is said, in one version, he cut the bullets in half and use have powder to let him keep some so he might have firearm to escape. But I have read several versions he didn't have one. Who do you believe, lol

@@outdoorlife5396 Even history written by those who were there at the time can contain errors of fact. In my years of firearms research, I have become very cynical about the stories attached to guns. Even the experts make mistakes. Including me.
