Evolution of our SHIPPING CONTAINER workshop

As we were developing our property, pretty early on we got a shipping container. It started as just a place to store things, but now it has evolved into a workshop. We built very sturdy shelves and a workbench and we can plug in lights.

Nice job on the shelving system and hanging the bikes inside. We are having a second container delivered and looking at ideas and we found some solid take aways 😊

Nice, you even left room on one side to build a roofed area to park the tractor in the winter.

We did. The thought has occurred to us but I don’t think we will this winter. Mainly just due to lack of time to be totally honest - I’d love to have some covered space for the tractor!

Brilliant! That really is a fantastic workshop and big enough to work as well as store things.

Nice tour! Now that's it's cool enough, I'm getting back into my garage to organize and clean up (mostly from the spring house painting project that ran late into too hot weather!), and am building 2x4 and plywood shelves much like yours. I might need to steal that office-filing cabinet idea, as well! As always, you clearly pay attention to the details.

Thanks! A good garage cleanup is so satisfying! I highly recommend the 2x4 shelves. Using them alongside our “heavy duty” metal shelves, the 2x4 and plywood ones are just so much stronger. And yes, highly recommend filing cabinets. We may even get another one or two. They’re deep enough drawers to store a useful amount of stuff, but because they pull all the way out, it’s easy to get what you need.

Thank you! I’ve been really happy with the brackets - easy to use and plenty strong. Just make sure you don’t mount them too high or you might find it hard to get the bikes up and down.

A brilliant idea to build a work shop in a shipping container - indestructible, rodent proof, waterproof, etc.

Absolutely! And another benefit - even if it’s not level, the floor is perfectly flat and smooth. Great for building projects on.

Matt did you consider two 20ft shipping containers placed parallel with a 16-20 ft space between. This would provide for a future roof spanning both containers creating a nice 20 x 20 covered work space. Maybe slightly more expensive for containers but accessing 20 ft container from each end would provide up to four ( 2 per container) 10 x 8 storage areas and reduce the 40 ft hallway.

Not really. We wanted to be able to store the sawmill in there, like we did last year, and that’s over 20ft. Also just in general, having a single large space is more useful to us than multiple smaller spaces. Depending on your needs though, I can see how that would work well.

Do you own this container now? I though you rented it. But bolting the shelf into the floor and planning to install an RV inlet sounds like you bought it meanwhile. Or would you be allowed to do such modifications with a rented one?

  • @AdventurousWay

We do - we rented it for about a year and then bought it. The price had dropped so much that we essentially didn’t lose out by buying it a year later. We decided when we bought it that if we want to modify it, we will.

I know you guys are safety conscious but, do you really have problems on your property or in your area with theft? I know better safe than sorry. I am just curious? Also, that has to be the neatest shipping container I have seen. Nice job.

We’re really just being over cautious. We’ve not had any issues with crime nearby, but better safe than sorry! We do try to keep it neat and tidy - and did make a special effort for the video 🤣

Have you had any problems is condensation? I would think that a tightly closed volume like this would have considerable condensation - especially during the changes of seasons. Mold, mildew and rusting of equipment - any signs of this?

  • @AdventurousWay

We had a little condensation last year on very cold mornings when we were working in there. Nothing since though, I suspect because we’re in and out so much so it’s really well vented.
