Actually, I recently just had the PTU in my Z replaced for free at a local Nissan dealer because it showed up as a recall. Even Z1 Motorsports mention the PTU recall at www.z1motorsports.com/ignition-system/nissan/new-300zx-power-transistor-unit-ptu-p-1779.html, so I'm not sure why anyone wouldn't just take it in for the free replacement.

Lower Radiator Support needs to be checked for rust, pinch welds need to be checked for rust, if possible check the tensioner if the timing was done, often the tensioner gap is set or sometimes it is reused and in the process is broken because the m6 bolt used to take the tension off the belt was screwed on too fast and cracks the tensioner, if possible check underneath the car and check the oil pan to ensure it is not dented in the middle where the pick up tube is creating oil starvation due to lack of the pick up tube being able to pick up oil, also check the rear main seal to see if it is leaking oil, while your under there check the drive shaft assuming it has a 2 piece drive shaft for the carrier bearing to see if it is worn out and not functioning correctly, power steering rack needs to be checked for any free play it needs to be tight and have no play, check for bad wheel bearings, clutch condition during test drive if it slips or not, and the condition of the transmission itself during test drive, typically on NA/TT with the higher milage z's out there the synchros tend to go after a lot of abuse. There pretty strong transmissions though so dont be discouraged.

Good video and it’s important that people understand that these cars were 50 grand brand new in the early 90s which is like 80 grand today tons of technology. I live in Toronto and you should always have a mechanic who knows these cars. I have my buddy Vuk at AMS and you will need one eventually. They suck to work on but well maintained cars are worth the extra cash when buying one. I have 585 whp with the apexi Neo not the best but works for now. Unfortunately because these cars and jdm right hand drive cars are plentiful most have been beaten so don’t settle. I bought mine in Nova Scotia but it was an original ontario car zero rust.

Most of what you said is true. Leaking from the T tops is a big one too. Remember to check that. Also a big problem is the coolant lines that run under the plenum. Those almost always leak and it's a good idea to check them. Also turbo coolant lines. Heater core is also a very expensive one. Motor mounts, diff mounts. Basically ALL of the rubber and tie rod ball joints. The early models 90-94 trans have a habit of grinding into 4th. Later style trans don't seem to have this problem. Timing belt service is a HUGE deal, make sure they know when it was last done before you buy. Includes water pump and thermostat. In my 10 years of owning 2 300zx N/A first and now a TT for 8 years. This is what I've learned from myself and other Z owners. I'll post again if I remember anything else or if you got a question hit me up. Otherwise, decent video. Good luck to all you Z maniacs!

The coolant lines under the plenum are for heating the throttle bodies, never heard of those leak. But it´s over-engineering and if you do have the plenum of it´s adviced to delete them (do a coolant line bypass)... not check them. This will also mean the turbo coolant lines are changed/updated. However, doing a plenum pull just for that would be a bit crazy. But if you have a major job under the plenum (injector change/update), it´s a good thing to simplify the engine bay from potential failing systems (such as the throttle body heater lines and the EGR pipes). I would say you shouldn´t buy this car if you hesitate on doing a plenum pull. If the car still has the type 1 injectors they will probably have to be changed sooner or later since they weren´t made for the etenol that was added to gasoline in the mid 90´s. Also, a properly made tuning requires upgraded type 2 injectors.

Rust, seats and ignition coils are rare problems on the Z32. In my 19 years of experience beeing a 2 time Z32 owner this is the first time I hear such a bad buying guide.... sorry to say. Yes, the PTU version 1 was bad, but most are replaced by now. Simply put a testdrive, a check for proper timing belt service and a compression test will will save you from unpleasant surprices. Vacuum/boost leaks and engine electrical are issues to keep an eye on as well. I´d say a testdrive with smooth idle, even drag and full boost will reveal most of those problems.

Just to pick one reputed forum here´s from z32.wikispaces.com/Coilpack: "Coilpacks rarely fail without incident (that is, they won't just up and quit working unless something catastrophic happens to them, such as an electrical short)": I live on the west coast of Sweden with salty winds from the Atlantic. Buy something which was inexpensive back then. Let's say 300zxtt was a 50k car back in 94. Which is equivalent to today's 80k vehicle. The maintenance cost will be equivalent to a 80k vehicle even though you may pay 15k for a TT today. Buy a B series civic or something. Great platform to learn and inexpensive to maintain.

Not exactly. If someone from japan came to America, they wouldn’t just call it the 300zx because they’re in America. They would call it the fairlady as they do in Japan. The side the wheel is on is not what changes the name. Culture only. The car has two names and you can decide what name you like best.
