Roger, you act like this is the first time you have ever even heard of the K-60. It’s been around for years, and I have one on each of my trucks - I have for years and years. This machine will put any drum machine to shame. For those criticizing the difficulty and inconvenience of working with and carrying sectional cables, the trick is to connect each section as you put them back into the basket. The K-60 is a money-making machine.

As an Australian plumber. I would say my favorite thing is when working on VC Pipe you go to clear roots which you use a camera on but can't get past the roots and once the cutter gets past the 1st inch it turns out to be a broken pipe and the head slipped past the break and gets jarred up and its all under slab. So you have to explain to the customer why your going to have to cut up the slap and their paying for it. These things always happen on a Friday aswell

The K60 is my favorite drain cleaner. If they don’t have cleanouts I always go from the roof. I Feed as much cable through the line until I can’t go any further. Once I feel like I’m close to the stoppage I will separate my cables and start feeding. That way I don’t have to connect each section together. Once I clear the stoppage I run a bunch of water to clean off my cables and then I store my cables in a carrier. I have a colleague that uses his right angle drill paired with these cables to clear stoppages all the time. I’ve used every drum machine on the market and once you learn the K60 you’ll never go back to drum machines. No more rusty cables sitting inside a wet drum. No more kinked and broken cables. And if you do break or lose a section, buy another one they are cheap! I plan on buying the K5208 next for bigger main lines

This is the best drain machine on the market. Compact, simple to use, can handle blockages in restaurants and supermarket departments with 4" mains. Only thing that I wish Ridgid would make standard when buying the unit is to include an enclosed cable holder with a drain on the bottom. This way, you're not dripping through the sales floor or customer's house, getting all over your truck, etc.

I've used both when fishing for brown trout including large drum machines that need a mini crane assembly to move in & out of the truck. Binding up in a line is a lot less a pain in the ass with the thicker coil than a 5/8" or whatever size cable that wants to immediately snap around your hand. Drum machines tend to be a lot more plug and play though, you're right. I first used this machine many moons ago when I was 18 & wish I had had a class on using rather than abusing it. If I was building a drain service truck, I'd start with this and a Milwaukee electric auger. Great video but I'm going to need it at helper speed.

K-60 is the bomb. K-1500 if it’s bad. Then the hydro jet, ours is a hot jet hot water jetter. The k-60 also uses the k-50 (smaller diameter) cable. Yes it’s a PITA to carry cables and get them dirty , and if you don’t have a good flow between helper/plumber it takes a bit. I couldn’t imagine getting stuck with a drum machine. I sometimes have to bend my cables to get into certain places , I can just throw that section out or keep it as my custom drop head leader. The clients that have reoccurring stoppages I can more or less guess at what feet it’s at and just whip out the pieces I need. I’m amazed at what a workhorse of a machine this thing is

I used a drum machine for years and just recently made the transition to Milwaukee’s new cordless sectional machine and can’t imagine going back. Being a solo plumber with no helper it’s easier for me not have to worry about cords or separate machines. Being able to clear small stoppages to main line stoppages with one machine is an easy win. Taking that machine on roofs with me is way easier than hauling a drum machine up a ladder

I've got the 5/8-7/8 version and it's been great to use, especially on roofs. I've also got a K50 and two Gorlitz drum machines. I almost always you the Milwaukee. I recently bought a couple of aftermarket batteries from Amazon to try out. I've been in the middle of the job a few times when the battery ran out so I thought having a second would be better than breaking out the K50 and extension cord. Haven't used them yet but $75 for two 6amp batteries seemed like a deal (even if the run time is shorter).

The thing with drums is you have a motor turning all 100'+ feet of cable plus the drum itself whether there is 1 foot of cable in the main or 100'. With a sectional, you'll have that same motor turning just the cable that's in the main line. And when you disengage, the cable stop instantly. I know guys who were drum guys and switched over to sectional. If you don't have to haul a drum machine down stairs, it's not bad but going down old, steep stairs is no fun at all and I would rather take the extra five minutes to make more trips to the van to get things.

I've used a sectional drain cleaner. The best thing about them is they are small and lightweight, as shown in the video. What's not shown: the actual sections of cable become extremely dirty after the first use and since it comes in sections of 15' you'll be carrying around 20 or so sections. Loose cables that will flop around everywhere if you don't have a good securing method. Maybe they have made a case for the sections by now but its ironic, you buy a sectional because it's small and lightweight but then you have to lug around large heavy cables.

That's a sectional machine, where is the drum machine? I run Spartan drum machines, 1065 and 100. 3/4" innercore cable in 50ft sections for the 1065 and 13/32" or 3/8" 75ft #8 bulb end cable with the 100. C Cutter and grease blades. Sometimes use a root cutter or retriver head. Works well for the past 40 years and 30 or so different plumbers using them. It's the strongest and most stable machine out of all that we have used or demoed. Replace parts and will last forever. I used to have a gas powered sectional machine on a trailer with 3/8 rod sections. We used it on very solid grease in 6" and bigger mains.

Ridgid sectional cables with pull themselves into the pipe when in the REVERSE rotation and back themselves out of the pipe when in the FORWARD position. Prayers! No honestly your best bet at getting in local 1 is through a local 1 shop. They are extremely competitive going though application and they can take years to call you. Apply for a helper position with a union shop company. If you get a job there they’ll place you under a 6 month probation period which then after you’ll get into the union. Having trade school, your OSHA 40 your g-60 and f-60 and if you can your NYC Limited gas card will help a lot. But PAR plumbing is a great union shop here in NYC to apply to but there is plenty more you can look up

Your regular pay, the skills you’ll learn working with our strict code and tall buildings, scrap metal and side work you’ll never be broke. None of that cheap helper skelper plastic piping and sharkbites out here. Straight cast iron, copper, brass, steel and steam piping. Not to mention steam and hydronic heating. Soldering, wrenching and sometimes lead and hemp joints. The skills you’ll learn out here you’ll be able to work anywhere in the country with ease.

I am currently in trade school part time for electrical work, after a couple of classes i realized i’d rather do plumbing. Do you know of any more union shops i should take a look at?

Found k-60 to be extremely good cable especially when clearing drains through an outside clean out or in a basement/crawl space but what I don’t like is how messy it is found with good preparation it can be done or with a second set of hands but definitely wouldn’t bring to a home with a finicky/clean freak owner.

Very easy to accommodate in a house! I use a combo of a tarp and sometimes a stick of 2" ABS to extend protection beyond the hose if I'm using the 7/8" cable. Been doing it for the past 5 yrs without a hitch! Granted it's a little more work to setup but def, doable!

i always run with a supervee for sinks and a k-60 for the big drains. the sections are your apprentices problem anyways ;) Was taught by a guy with gruesome scars on his thumb from using a fake-leather glove that caught on it, nearly ripped the thumb off. Always use genuine leather like the old baseball mit type or else the metal plated glove. fun machines but dangerous! \

I use those thick rubber blue gloves ( super thick) Pretty sure they are called sanitary gloves . And have a bottle of dawn ( dish soap) As a lubricate ( couple drops ever section cable) and not once has it ever binded or hung up . Hell , as long as you use dawn. You can get away with regular latex gloves. Though i wouldn't recommend it.

Sectional if you want to actually do something. Drums are usually for lazy half assed plumbers. Drums equal problems and high over head. Sectional you can massage that pipe and work out the problem. Sectional you get instant feed back on progress aka a backspin. A drum machine binds up way before you get backspin and then your up shits creek

I been cabling drains for 27 years give me a Spartan 1065 with 3/4 cable and some blades and I'll show you how it's done. If I was to go on the roof stack which I wouldn't I'd cut the vent below and cable it or jet the roof stack if I had to. This is ridiculous.

First of all, no one should be on the roof with a machine. These sectional machines are horrible, literally slinging crap everywhere with the cable jumping. A roof vent is not a clean out, yet do you know what is?…… a clean out, install one. Oh when he said the only time you should be reversing is blah, blah, blah, actually most “plumbers” will be reversing when it wraps around their shirt, glove or sadly their arm. Let’s be honest, this open sectional or open drum units are a thing of the past, let it stay there.
