Not sure what happened to this upload yesterday as it decided to go blank and not show any video or sound. KZread could not fix it either so here we are round two.
I thought this would be a good place to start for a new fishkeeper, or maybe you are already an aquascaper wanting to make sure you have everything. This video builds a good foundation before I set up more aquariums on the channel.
In this episode we go through everything you need to start up a successful community fish tank. We go through everything: filters, heaters, led lighting, tap safe etc.
Once I start setting up new aquariums on the channel, any of you wanting to know the shopping list for a new fish tank can come back to this video and work out what you need.
Find the shopping list below:

This needs to be a QR code at the door to any aquarium/pet/fish shop and you are not allowed to ask any questions until you have watched it 😆

Hahaha I'll start printing them and sticking them up when I visit!
I found extra long tweezers essential to getting the plants to stay in the substrate. Very useful video, it's good you didn't tally the cost... nobody would ever start in the hobby:)

Good idea, yeah I maybe a little scary but not too bad.
Can we get a video on a-z of plants, as in a full list of aquarium plants, including difficulty levels, what's more suitable to hard or soft water etc. Would be really helpful as not everyone can afford trial and error. PS great videos Matt!
You mentioned that some cheaper heaters are less efficient but more important is how build quality relates to safety. The heater is the only thing that when it fails, it can be a real disaster. I think that test strips are the best thing for beginners, they are more likely to keep up water testing when its easy and then move on to liquid when they are really into the rhythm.

I totally agree with you!
Patience , Patience, More patience, A non addictive personality (multiple tank syndrome). Buckets of endless money. And the ability to keep a straight face, when someone says "I thought aquariums were supposed to be Peaceful, tranquil, calming" These are the things you need.

Probably the best beginner fish tank video ever. I just wish you would have held up the list for a pause and capture or screenshot op. Once again, you are the man. Love it, and please keep them coming. "Fish Up!"
Your best video so far - so informative and funny! I will be passing this along to all my newbie fish keeping friends. I love that you explained check valves - these are so important to so many applications in the hobby. Also loved the heavy metals guitar tribute lol!
Really apricate the time and thought you've but into this video as I'm starting a fresh water tank with the help of maidenhead aquatics and no one else on KZread has this straight forward guide so thank you its really going to help me!

Thank you means a lot to hear that my videos make it easier! ❤️
I love the shop you manage. I wish we had more of those here in New York, and in the United States.
I would have added filter media because many time during the setup dirt debris and such inevitably get in the water so shortly after you set it up and ran the filter to clear it up you will need to change the filter media or clean it so some extra is great to have on hand. Also a med products and aquarium salt especially for new fish. I prefer to add a simple quartine tank consisting a simple tank/plastic tub / bucket, air pump, sponge filter, heater water also may some cover to easy the fishes stress( it can be as easy as some pieces of 1¼-1¾ ( 31 to 35 mm) diameter pvc. I don't like to introduce new fish without going through a med treatment routine and isolation for a least 3 weeks. This is to ensure I am not introducing any pesties into my permanent tank. I know you are trying to do a basic set up but if you don't talk about now you may find it harder for them to realize it later. I believe you water parameters for you fish in your store are set and kept to a higher standards but not all fish store or places to buy fish are keep the same high standards you do. Especially if you do online purchasing. But the reality is all places don't have the same integrity as you do and after a disease wipes out all you prized fish at a high life and financial cost loss; the few dollars in some simple protection before introducing your first fish is every realized. I see MD take your fish water and all and dump into his aquariums and it works for him but that one time him or any one else gets fish from some where else makes you vulnerable to say it looks good I will take the risk. But if you do preventive measures as part of you routine from the very start you are creating a routine the will protect you and you animals for a long time of grief. Because once a beauty gets in it much hard and costly to get out of the aquarium and sometimes it a complete overhaul of the aquarium and some of those little pest can enter into the substrate and decorations and they will either have to be thrown out or boiled or sterilized before reusing them. It happen to me once treated the tank drain all the water out after losing all the animal life filled it back up. Set isolation quartine tank went through and the meds only to add the animal back into the aquarium that had been infected only to have it happen to me all over again. Some beastie survived through the clean of the original tank only to infect my new fish. So now to prevent it I break the tank complete down dispose of the substance or anything that can't survive heat and boiling and chemical sterilizing the aquarium including filter, air tubing, heater and thermometer. Then reset the tank. However had I gorging into the routine of isolation and medication I could have protected ll the animal and my finial investment better if I had adopted that routine, unfornately no one ever suggested it to me. But we learn from our mistake and some can be very costly mentally emotionally financially along with all the labor and the cost of life if your fish. And some fishes personality can never be replaced much like any pet. I learned my lesson the hard way, but you don't have to as the old adage goes a ounce s of prevention is worth more than a pound of cure; from the other side of the pound it might be said a gram of prevention is worth more than a kilo of cure, or maybe a pence spent on prevention is worth far more than a pound or cure. Either way you get the idea. I belive having medical and and isolation tank/bucket or tub is as much of an important as a filter and a test kits. I know it's it is not a basic setup up but I do believe it should be something you need to consider as soon as possible after you first fish are introduced before buying any other fish and make sure it is available because you just never now when it may happen some times a little isolation and some aquarium salt are all you need to save a prized fish's life and the lives of their tankmates.
Was great talking to you in the shop today even though it was coming up closing time and you were busy! Will be coming back again as soon as I can to get stuff to get the shrimp tank :)
Thanks for the grocery list Matthew, it's much appreciated. My wife and I will be heading to Cornwall in August for 6 months and we'd love to stop in at Maidenhead. We'll be setting up some tanks at an elderly home for the senior to interact with as an activity so lookout for us. God bless, take care and keep up the good work brother.
Fun video! I would also highly recommend basic meds (especially for ICH)...you don't want to see those dreaded white spots on a Friday night after the stores have closed and not have it (as happened to me when I set up my first aquarium).
Great idea of shopping for the items, love that!
A fresh and good vdeo actually helping people understanding the aquarium hobby. Ant realisations about how "back and forth" one has to go through the store to get what one wants as starting an aquarium? But good show!
Great list for a newbie!! Keeping fish is such an awesome experience, but only if you start out right. I always feel bad for the people that come home so excited about their new fish, only to have the worst experience because they just weren’t prepared.
This was so helpful, thanks. I am planning on getting a new aquarium and this really helps me know what I need. Love the vids btw
Love the entertaining little bits you leave in the videos, extra editing goes a long way keep it up!
Thanks, Matt! Great fun. I'd give most anything to have such a well-stocked fish shop somewhere close to hope. Keep 'em coming!
I have been a saltwater aquarist for 15 years; planning to take down my Fluval 13.5 AIO to attempt my very first freshwater planted tank. Thank you for sharing these videos! Suggestions are appreciated 🙂
Excellant run down of what's needed to set up a fish tank. Thanks Matt, for the refresher. It's been a while since I've had tanks, so this is a great refresher for me! I'm not sure when I'll get to do that, so am saving your video for future reference. Loving all your videos by the way, keep them coming! Anyway, just watched MD's part 3 of setting up his new studio, and he mentioned you guys will get together over there for I'm guessing part #4. Looking forward to it, as usual, as your collaberations are amazing! And so much fun!
What an amazing video ... straightforward and easy to follow! Going to send it to the boss to watch! Great job Matt 😁
Bro we really need a maiden head aquatics and fish shop Matt in Michigan. Your selection of legit aquascaping material is so far beyond what 90% of stores here carry. Especially where I live. Operation bring Fish shop Matt to Michigan! Lol love you videos brother man.

Matt, thank you for this video. It's great for beginners. You are a joy to watch and so very knowledgable. I came to you from watching MD. Cheers!
Amazing vids to put on while doing some aquarium maintenance, love your voice :)
Great video, shopping lists are great.
Great video!! Just wanted to say, there actually is a way to figure how many liters of soil/ sand you need. I know ADA has a little calculator thing, as do other companies. I just ran into the same prob w a cube tank I bought on sale and just popped the size (6g) into Google with"how much substrate do I need" and it popped up answers for gravel and aqua soil. Just a helpful little bit. But there an even nerdier way too, I'm a landscaper so you compute square feet at how many inches of substrate you want. I'm sure our handy Google has a calculator for that too, as long as you have your tank measurements.
You are a wealthy of great info! Thank you again for sharing it☺️

This is a brilliant video. Thank you so much. I’ve used this for home school education for setting up an aquarium. ❤
He could have edited it out but he just proceeds to say "Hang on hang on hang on hang on" 🤣 So gold! ✨😂
Matt, your store is well stocked. 😊 I would need to visit a few shops to find what I need. I end up buying through Amazon or other online store. Need your shop in California. Great video! Can’t wait for the next build with MD
Matt, you are just the best.
Awesome video Matt! Great for a starter like me. Many thanks!
Nice vid! Super useful info. Just starting myself into the hobby and basic, checklist style information is so nice to have for piece of mind! I swear, I've learned more about biology looking into how to start an aquascape than I have had a decent idea of WHAT precisely to put together. Hopefully that sentence made some manner of sense. Thanks again!
Really look forward to your videos, keep up the good work.
Thank you, Matt, for this video! I wish I'd had something like this for my first fish tank.

Always go for the API range like Matt has chosen they are amazing! I use API Quik Start, API Tap Water Conditioner, API Stress Zyme, and API Accuclear. I keep three common goldfish in my fluval shaker, and 300+ litre tank never had an issue. Not long had the setup, but my 11 year old goldfish nemo, who I saved from a friend's fish bowl, loves it!!!
Cool store, thanx for the video
Great informative video. Now I hope there's a follow up video of you setting the tank up with the things you bought 👍
Matt is going total beast mode...
Love the heavy metals!
I wish this video was out when I first start up just a little over 12 months. I did a lot of research months previous to me getting one and also did a list of things I would need. This video would have been perfect so helpful for beginners I got a bit mind boggled at first

Gives the beginners a good idea what’s involved when starting up a tank..I’m lucky been keeping fish since the 70s when we only had the basics 🤷air pump air driven filter.tube light and huge starters to work the things.heaters were very expensive bk then to..ive 15 tanks but only 12 set up at the moment..people these days don’t know how lucky they are when it comes to the Aquarium Hobby so much to pick from 🤷.plus they can pick EVERYTHING that they need at MAIDENHEAD AQUATICS WELLINGTON SOMERSET lol 😉😉Steve tivvy 🇬🇧

Nice video 😌
Great Job as always. You and MD are so enthusiastic. It rubs off. Any chance in covering Algae issues on new Aquariums and CO2 injection. A right of passage for me and off-putting at the time, recently converted to CO2 though and finally mastered plants. Seriously fussy compared to fish😁
can you do a video about jewel ciclids? cuz i bought some and i want to know even more about them. Ty and good video mate.
adding Fish FOOD to your shopping list would be nice!
This is in regards to setting up a new aquarium. Maybe you could have a discussion on the slimy white looking goop that sometimes forms on wood. It’s been a very long time since I had a tank, it’s was doing really good and then I put a piece of wood in. Since I never heard of this I thought it would make a good topic. Thanks!

I heard it could be bacteria. Wood and rocks need cleaned with a water bleach solution for so long and then in dechlorinator so long before putting in your tank.
Cabinet : Be careful when NOT getting one. The surface at home may not be built to carry the added weight (spindly legs or unsupported where the weight of the aquarium may be) - another consideration would be insurance - not all household insurances will cover damages if the cabinet is deemed insufficient or not purpose built. Bucket : This bucket should never be used for anything else but the aquarium.
Hi Matt I think giving a rough estimate what it would cost someone starting your first aquarium would have been great ! what do you think ? you could have done a checkout of your trolley.. ps . just an idea! love your videos...

@@FishShopMatt plants - they are the biggest expense and cost me sooooo much all ready 😂 Hubby says I have too many plants but I can see loads of planting space still 🤣
How much does everything cost? How long do you have an aquarium set up before you put your fish in? Great video. I would be nice to have a check list like that when shopping for a new tank. I see someone asked about pricing. I would be difficult to do the amounts for all the countries that watch. ( Cool that you are world wide).

How do you know when to start using a leveling mat? Is there a situation when you should definitly not use a leveling mat or is it always benificial?
great video i could easily understand everything maybe cus im a matt too hahah
I see you have Aquacare that only test NH3 in test tube format. In the US I can't find a test tube Ammonia tester that ONLY test for NH3. Yes, I can get API but it test for both NH3/NH4. I also can get non test tube versions.
is there a rule of thumb for the size of filter (L/Hour) for number of litres of tank? or any filter will do?
Good explanation for a starter tank but I think it would be a good idea to attach a price on what you have in your trolley
What’s the cost for a set up like that. I know every where is different but a basic idea would be nice. Great video
Matt this is from India for what you and MD scraped betta sorority tank please suggest the alternative Canister and lights the oase and chihiros is to pocket heavy to my hobby

Hey Matt, Quick question. Will tap water safe remove copper to make it safe for inverts?
👍🏻👍🏻
Am hoping to pick your brains about water that can be used in an aquarium. Sheffield Made Plants recommends water from a dehumidifier for watering plants as there is no chlorine and so forth. Would it work in an aquarium? We have one in our garage and I would have more than enough to let me do regular water changes with it.
Nice vid, Matt, but you forgot about live plants 😅

Hi, can I setup a big planter as an aquarium in your ways
