Everything You Know About Sleep Is Wrong

Everything that you've been told about sleep is more or less wrong. Today we are going to bust some of the most common myths about sleeping.
We all need it, and most of us could use more. We’re talking about sleep. It is estimated that we spend about 1/3 of our lives sleeping, yet it remains a mysterious process. Night after night, we shut down for several hours during sleep, and everything from hormone release to tissue repair goes on in our bodies without us even noticing it. Our brains generate dreams that many of us can hardly remember or make sense of. There are also nightmares, sleep disorders, and so much more. “We still have so much to learn about why we sleep, and how sleep works,” writes clinical psychologist Michael J. Breus in a Psychology Today article. Because there is still so much that is unknown about sleeping, it is understandable that myths about sleep have emerged over the years. We will discuss some of these myths in this episode of The Infographics Show, “12 myths about sleep that you didn’t know.”

There has been much debate over who is better off in life - early risers (“larks”) or late risers (“night owls”). It turns out that your health and success in life are not determined solely by what time of the morning you get up. According to a BBC article, there is a study that “showed that night owls are as healthy and wise as morning types - and a little bit wealthier.” Examples of successful night owls include Buzzfeed CEO Jonah Peretti, author James Joyce, and Winston Churchill.
And not everyone is meant to be an early riser. What determines whether you are or not is something called a chronotype. Sleep expert Dr. Colleen Carney describes it as a “’sleep window inside of us.’” She explains that “’it is genetic” and “developmental factors” also play a role. For instance, young children tend to go to sleep earlier and rise earlier, but the internal sleep clock shifts in puberty so that teenagers want to sleep later and rise later.
#11. Getting less than 8 hours of sleep a night is bad for you.
While some people need 8 hours of sleep to feel refreshed, other people can get by with a little less sleep. You might even live longer if you sleep a little less. However, the NHS cautions that sleep needs vary by age and other factors, so don’t think you are more likely to die early if you “do not follow the ’standard’ pattern for sleep.”
#10. When you wake up at night, you lose sleep for only the amount of time you were awake.
Getting up for even 15 minutes in the middle of the night can cause you to wake up feeling tired. As anyone who has cared for a newborn can tell you, you will feel even more fatigued if you wake up several times a night. According to one source, a 2014 study of people who had 8 hours of interrupted sleep and those who had only 4 hours of sleep showed that “the mood and attention of folks with interrupted sleep were just as bad as those who slept for only four hours.” Depression and irritability were common in both groups, and their ability to perform an attention task “got worse the longer they kept at it.”

    When Napoleon Bonaparte was asked how many hours sleep people need, he is said to have replied: "Six for a man, seven for a woman, eight for a fool." How much sleep do you need? 😴

    When my little brother was a baby I remember seeing him be asleep with his eyes open. He was too little to even be faking it and I would wave my hand in front of his face, getting no response, confirming that he was, in fact, asleep. But then by the time he was a year old I don't think he ever did it again. The end. Thank you. What a great audience.

    @@instinctonline6875 People aren't quite sure. It has something to do with REM sleep. That is the 5th and final stage of sleeping where people make rapid eye movement when the eyes are closed while sleeping, but the rest of the body is paralysed. That is actually good because if we weren't paralysed, we could try to act out the actions that we dream, or fall off of our bed. It has something to do with REM sleep and alpha waves that the brain makes. People that have them increased act differently from those who have it decreased. Frequently. In Herz. People that manage to recall their dreams, can wake up at night more and something happens so that the dreams get inside of our internal memory. Ye, so... It's not quite known why. The knowledge of that is just on the tip of the iceberg with a few experiments done.

    Ceaser VIPs If I were him, I think I'd change the homepage of the company's website, and display a message trying to explain what I really did. I would explain that during the board of directors meetings, the topic never was "how to do something good for this world", but always was "how to make more money, how to attract more people, so we can display more ads and get more clicks". I think I would sabotage the company, do something more human, less corporate. I'd try to make people think outside of the box, instead of publishing another article like "21 Polly Pocket Sets That Will Give Every '90s Kid Intense Nostalgia". I would tell people to wonder if the world they want for their kids is a world where their kids are exposed to thousands of ads per day (you think nobody can see thousands of ads per day? just search on Google for studies about the number of ads we see every day on average). There is a lot more to say, but I guess you get the point.

    They believe when we sleep the brain cleans itself of its waste build-up through the day. It's also a better state for injuries to heal and our bodies to grow as were not moving and exerting extra energy or damaging wounds more. Why we need to sleep to do this isn't fully clear but it makes sense as I notice (brain wise) If i don't rest I get headaches and feel downright nasty which could be said waste build-up, and when I had long periods of insomnia it was awful. I couldn't remember squat and I felt like I was constantly intoxicated.

    Coming from an insomniac: Does anyone else feel that involuntarily lying half-awake at night kinda still constitutes as sleeping? Then when you finally do get shuteye your body somehow compensates for the time that you weren’t asleep but wanted to… Well to me it’s a marvel that 4 hrs actual sleep can (sometimes) feel like the optimum 7/8 hrs, and I wake up not as groggy as I would’ve expected!

  • @pepperidgefarm8010

    @pepperidgefarm8010

    5 жыл бұрын

    This probably because in 4 hours you gain total quality sleeping. As far as I know there was 3 different stage of sleeping: starting from awake, going to deep sleep, and REM. The timing of your body fully restored is when you get enough deep sleep. But still you need to have at least 6-7 hours in order to restore all the organs and in the right timing. 11-01 is for heart, 1-3 for intestine, and so on. Another case to relate with this is when you do quick afternoon sleeping (usually after lunch, for 15-30 minutes) and when you wake up, you fell just like wake up in the morning.

    When I was a kid I had very often nightmares, I would see a monster or more coming to kill me and I would be usually inside my home or at the garden, worse, I would always be unable to go further from the monster, but the option to walk closer to it was possible. After years I learned how to ovrrcome those dreams and either escape from the monsters or kill it with a weapon or a superpower. And all that might sound cool, but I had to experience many many nights each year for many years those. Also, when I was a teenager I did a small meditation once and I could control all my dreams like if I was a God, but it lasted for half a year or more. Our mind really is strange.

  • @JetBrooke

    @JetBrooke

    4 жыл бұрын

    It would depend on the type of headphones. In ear buds could potentially damage your hearing overtime. If you used wired headphones or big chunky ones they might also hurt your ears or wrap around you, causing you to wake up due to the discomfort. Alternatively, you could invest in a sleep-aid that plays music quietly as you fall asleep.

    I just pulled an all nighter because of college finals, slept for about 1 hour. This was after an entire night of coding and logical thinking. When I woke up from my one hour nap before class, I noticed I was thinking everything in patterns, logical functionalities and even Polynomial shapes, it was super trippy. I stared at my closet for like 15 minutes, which felt like an hour, and everytime I looked at my pants, I kept trying to figure out how they worked, I was like trying to move it in a 3D landscape, i was breaking it down into parts, all of this on my mind while I stood there like an idiot. But honestly, this has been a great day, all of my stress is gone, I'm not as angry with people, and I even feel more motivated in life.

    I have once fell asleep while cycling. Bump in the road woke me up but I managed to recover from falling due to riding my bike real low. It was a dark night and used to visit my friend living far away from the city and we spent hours talking which often ended at 1-2 AM so I was feeling quite safe about that and I love cycling trough warm summer nights. There were no lanterns on the way, pitch dark, only the cheap headlight that was on dying batteries, and while there were parts where I could guide by the moon passing trough the trees along the road and just keep myself in the middle there were parts were I had to rely on this dying lightsource I had so I had to slow down to walking pace which was calming coupled with warm, wind less weather. Head light was weaker and weaker until it was barely visible and I have fallen asleep :D

    I've fallen asleep while driving and i must say that i am lucky to be here....I remember dreaming that i was driving which helped me i think...because when i woke up i was doing the same thing i was dreaming.....luckily i was still going straight and the road was straight....glad i wasn't dreaming something way different from driving. Don't drive tired on distance drives. lesson learned

    Fun sleep paralysis story: Since I often suffer from sleep paralysis, I've taught myself to immediately close my eyes the moment I realise I'm paralysed - that way I don't have to witness any spooky hallucinations. I have still had some non-visual hallucinations though; most memorably is I recall once hearing a cow moo right next to me in my bedroom xD

    I mean... disagreeing with one arbitrary point about what success is doesn't discredit the rest of the video. Seems like a silly reason to stop watching... but ok.

    I have slept with my eyes open. Freaked my wife out. I used to sleepwalk, but this was more like sleep paralysis. I felt like I could see and was conscious, but couldn't move. She was so bugged out by it she went to close my eyes, which I saw, and caused me to jump out of sleep with a startle, like those dreams where you fall and wake up when you hit the pillow.

    I have had Bell's Palsy twice in the past, and in both cases the eye on the side of my face that was paralyzed could only partially close. I still had to sleep, and I slept with one eye opened lol!
