Unpopular opinion: you should restomod this car. Any attempt at "purity" is already lost so get modern efi, coil on plug ignition, an aftermarket ecu, modern or uprated transmission, electronic boost control, a modern turbo etc. Make this thing reliable and a hoot to drive, for a given value of reliable. It's a nineties lotus after all

I was a mechanic for Toyota’s in the early 1990’s and we got to work and service Lotus, as Toyota owned them at the time. Here in Australia, the windscreens were replaced all the time under warranty. Owners would switch on the Airconditioning on a summers day and the screen would shatter due to thermal shock. They would also crack lower suspension all the time. I watch this with interest, as it will be a Pandora’s box of pain

The engine may not have stopped because it "jumped its timing" but because Lotus has an inertia fuel cut off switch in case of an accident. You did mention that the engine stopped running after a "spin out". Hit the fuel cutoff reset switch and that may solve an issue. That charge cooler electric pump is aftermarket. The OEM pump is cast aluminum with a rubber impeller, that have a service life and needs to be replaced periodically. It ran off of the distributer drive in the middle, and on top, near the front of the engine. This engine has GM electronic ignition, not needing the distributer drive.

Team Chain!!! As the owner of two Deloreans, I can affirm that anything over 280 horsepower risks the longevity of that transaxle. However, if you address the specific weaknesses within the transaxle it should be able to handle over 500 horsepower. I recommend getting an upgraded input shaft coupler. It's about $200.

That pump is a conversion from a mechanically driven pump that went into the hold the distributer went into in older cars. External electric water pumps are a common mod, but if you replace the impeller in of the mechanical pump on a set interval, it does fine. Maintenance and Lotus Owners is a rare combo.

Had a 1990 Lotus Espirt Turbo back in the day in the UK (No Charge Cooler). They used to say that Lotus stood for, 'Lots Of Trouble, Usually Serious' but I never had any reliability troubles with mine. That's not to say that I didn't have issues with it. 1. Rear brakes used to seize on if not used for a while. 2. Engine would almost or sometimes actually stall under heavy braking. Think that one is down to poor oil pump not able to cope as the oil coolers are at the front of the car. 3. Very stiff gear change after motorway miles and car hot. This is due the gear linkage being directly above the exhaust box and drying out the grease. I had some joy with fitting a heat shield between the exhaust box and the gear linkage. 4. Loose headlights. Hinge brackets loose on headlight units. From memory I riveted them back on which fixed the issue. I had the timing belt changed on mine during a full service and from what I remember the bloke at the garage said it was an engine out job. Looking forward to following you guys on this project.

when I was in auto school in late 70's, there was several Jensen-Healys in repair shops in town, timing belt jumped and valves ran into pistons (Lotus engines). Also I rode in one of these in the 80's, was told it had a turbo, that thing was a rocket! Reminded me of something like a F1 4 cyl

That charge cooler pump is 100% aftermarket. The factory one is mechanical and mounted where the distributor was on older models. The impellers fall apart, so having electric is good. I can tell you from experience that these cars will run and drive with the timing out a tooth. You have two oil coolers and the pipes seize, so be VERY careful removing them as you can easily crack the coolers. There's no oil cooler thermostat, it's worth installing one to reduce oil warm up time. The Renault UN1 can be a decent gearbox, they are used in GT40 replicas. I believe that era are some of the stronger ones. The exhaust manifolds crack, so add shielding from water spraying off the wheel. "Cheswick" is pronounced "Chez-ick" ;-). I've done a load of work on my '98 GT3, with the 920 2L. Hit me up if you need any advice.

Highly debatable on belts being stronger than a chain man. I helped build an old shovelhead that initially ran a $200 belt from the transmission to the motor, and we snapped three of them until we swapped to a chain, and haven’t had a problem since.

Make sure you guys replace the red hose from the clutch master to the slave cylinder with the stainless option. This is an Infamous known issue with these cars as the red plastic hose will expand from pressure with time and will not effectively disengage the slave cylinder therefore unable to disengage the clutch.

For the o2 sensor location, if using stock engine control mimic stock distance from the turbine. If doing an aftermarket wideband o2 sensor follow manufacturer specs if you have the room. AEM UEGO X-Series says: - 18 inches (45cm) downstream of the cylinder head's exhaust port or turbocharger
