Everything Wrong With Final Destination in 21 Minutes or Less

Фильм және анимация

Final Destination is a film that spawned many sequels. Death really doesn't like to be cheated. Anyway, there are more sins than you probably expected.
Next week: 2021 horror sins and more horror sins from the aughts.
Remember, no movie is without sin. Which movie's sins should we count next?

Yep, but German only turned from "evil unpleasant sounding language" to "oh, kind of cool!" after 2000. And this movie really doesn't strike me as being this subtle, if that double meaning was on purpose, then some not-really-teens would have figured it out and then shouted at least two minutes about it.

It has always bugged me that the first death was so obviously intelligently controlled and involved things happening that physically couldn't (the water going back into the pipe) but then every other death is just a load of concidences and bad luck that got nudged into happening at the same time. That first one is a real odd one out.

It likely has to do with Death getting the ball rolling. Because it can't just take lives apparently and has to acquire them through them dying from any reason in the real world, as well as having its own plan of action for how it wanted to acquire them in what order; it likely forced that one so that the next one could seem a little more 'natural causes'. Sure, Death could have just waited until Tod was in a better position to die from something more natural, we know it has patience since it kept poking at Alex when he was staying in the cabin, but it doesn't seem to yield to any consistencies. It's patient one person, then impatient the next.

What you said about the buss driver is funny. In one of the Final Destination books the main character actually happens to be the bus driver that hit Terry. He was speeding because his company was getting on drivers about their timing. But he does serve time in prison for vehicular manslaughter. Honestly I feel like this first movie didn't know what it wanted to be at first. It seemed like it was trying to personify Death, by having it physically manufacture circumstances that lead to someone's death and then clean up its mess, as only a person would do. I think they really tightened up that plot line in the following movies by having situations happen more out of chance, seemingly, instead of a grand design or purposefully manipulated trap. Although interestingly, my theory isn't that these people cheat death, but that Death actually shows its hand to certain people on purpose, to see if they react, and see if they attempt to change the plan or shake it off as a fever dream. In this way, Death can hunt, and pursue victims that are knowingly trying to outrun its plan.

I agree with you there. I didn't think though that the plane exploded close enough to the terminal to shatter the windows like that. If it could shatter the windows from that distance, then it would've also shattered the windows of every home and business within 1 or 2 miles from the airport, especially since the windows in airport terminals are made of stronger glass than the glass of windows in many houses. Another thing, in the guy's on board prediction vision of the plane disaster, there were several different fires each starting after another starting, glass shattering, and the plane apparently going down with people screaming. But with the actual crash, there was just one explosion. That there sets the theory that even though the guy's prediction vision ended up coming true, his prediction vision wasn't accurate with the details. I guess that what mattered in the movie was how the jist of his vision was correct, and it therefore didn't matter that all the details weren't correct if the end result of everyone on board being killed was.

That would have been a fun twist on the series too. If the roller coaster hadn't crashed, none of the characters would have believed there was a premonition for most of the movie. The two girls die, seeming like a coincidence, then the next few deaths make the main character look like a crazed murderer, and finally after a couple deaths that couldn't have been murder, people begin to believe the "Death has a plan" Angle. It would be a really interesting departure from the norm, since the main character wouldn't even have evidence their premonitions worked for a large chunk of the movie.

Sin 84: Death doesn't "just stab people" because that would be unfair to Alex as everybody would consider him the main suspect. Death's job is just to kill people, and apparently it does it by looking either as a suicide or a freak accident, which would leave nobody as a suspect. Sin 101: trains can easily weight between 3 and 11 THOUSAND TONS. They don't slow down as fast as you imagine. Sin 115: Because he's not the next one to die. Clear is.

True, but in real life, I don’t think death would have been “oh no, I can’t kill him yet, I have to kill Clear first,” I think death would be more like “opportunity spotted, time to die early Alex.”

I actually saw this film in the early 2000s when it was new, and looked up the script online for it. The original script had the exact same scene with Alex having a vision of an oncoming train before they got to the track just after his own seatbelt was momentarily broken. But it actually mentions something not seen in that exact same shot of the oncoming train: It obscured the top half of Billy's head, as did a traffic light earlier.

There were several times I got confused about who saves who in their spot on the list. Alex was pulled away from life-threatening scenarios several times and death didn't skip him, so I guess the sin is you have to perform a very specific act of life saving to make death skip you.

  • @Apocalypse21187

    @Apocalypse21187

It only skips the person who's next on the list, so Alex being pulled from life threatening situations before he was next didn't matter, to clarify it sequels established they can't die early, so if they aren't next on deaths list of people who should've died in the disaster at the start of the movie, they'd survive anyway till its their turn unless someone saves them.

  • @aaronpop0083

in the original script Alex is supposed to be the only one that survived, but because he saves clear and also she was supposed to be pregnant with his child. They reuse both of these ideas in later movies. The original ending was gonna be clear delivering the baby and then right after the power flickers as death comes for her again. Test audiences didn't like the baby ending so they scrapped it. There's small parts in the original release that made it in. Gotta remember this whole movie came from a failed x files script. So there was a lot of making it up as they went.

I don't know what it is about this franchise but it's the only franchise that really makes me feel uneasy and unsettled whenever I think about it. I think it's related to the Tanning Bed deaths in 3, but also the fact that the deaths are so violent and mostly brutally graphic and really well done effects, but aren't so far over the top that they become laughable (to most at least, some people really are just messed up)

I always thought it was a shame the movie sequels degenerated into more unlikely/unrealistic deaths and pretty much dropped expanding on the plot. I was hoping that at some point they would be like: Death actually has a physical form and he's the coroner guy. Its not like he's angry that people mess up his plan, he was just bored and intentionally gave people those visions to try and outwit him. He's literally torturing them due to boredom! But no, they stuck with the vague "force of nature" thing, but also contradict that with its very vile and almost intentionally cruel means of killing, while never explaining why some people get those visions of how to prevent their death's in the first place.
