    You are right, now the counter argument that Oxhorn makes here is that the migration to the Midwest wasn't that long ago for people to forget, but I would argue that it doesn't matter because in F1 one of the scribes tell the player that the BoS doesn't care about their history and the story we are told by the BoS is that Roger Maxson lead and exodus to Lost Hills but they didn't know from where, we only learn about their tue origins of the BoS form Captain Maxson's diary in the Mariposa Base, It's posible many in the Brotherhood still didn't know where they came from when they left

    Speaking of hairy mammal deathclaws, I've seen early design sketches from Fallout 1, where deathclaws look exactly like that. They were changed to smooth skin lizards because of performance problems with models. Evidently designers of Fallout Tactic got those skatches without knowing which was actually used, and which was not. That might be case also with another lore-breaking designs.

  • @s.m.2523

    @s.m.2523

    Actualy they knew which was used. They used the mamallian Deathclaw voluntarily as both an homage the original intent of the Deathclaws and to willingly show that there could be radical version of a species: According to Chris taylor on the No muttnts allowed forums: "“I'm pretty sure the main reason that the deathclaw lost its hair from concept to production was a technical limitation of the rendering software at the time. I can't remember if it was the amount of additional rendering time required, an animation issue getting all the hair to move properly, or something else, but it was something along those lines. The hairy deathclaw in FOT was inspired by the original concept, plus we thought it was nifty to show that there variations and different mutations of the same stock "beast". We probably should have had both versions, but that's a decision based on hindsight." (quote can be found on the wiki)

    When the mechanic says "It's burning oil," he's referring to damaged components. Oil is not supposed to get into the combustion chambers, but if seals are worn out, oil can leak into them. It's still an issue unique to gas-powered engines, though. I have no idea how Fallout's retro-aesthetic nuclear-powered vehicles' engines work, but I imagine they still need oil to lubricate the moving parts.

  • @metalchono

    @metalchono

    3 жыл бұрын

    I've always thought that the engines on these vehicles probably work with a nuclear power core, like the ones used for power armor. I picture them acting like a sort of heater that replicates a cycle similar to the Otto/Diesel engine, but steam powered, which could explain why when you blow up cars in F4, you get nuclear waste. Also, considering the fossil fuel crisis, it is quite surprising to find such a vast amount of cars left over, if oil reserves were dwindling. But what could probably support the theory is the fact that the Highwayman of F2 works with nuclear power.

    I figured that the Fusion cars still used oil lubricants. Mostly because well... you go somewhere like garages and service stations in Fallout 4, 76, New Vegas, 3, and you keep finding a lot of canisters of oil (as well as gasoline) in the game. Part of how I squared it myself? There's mentions (in admittedly later games like 4 and New Vegas) that a lot of cars when the bombs dropped still were gasoline powered. Probably why America cared for the huge well they nabbed in the Pacific. Upgrading to Fusion Cars was kind of a new thing. But that's just me trying to logic it out.

    With the Scribe it sounds like he told the Raiders he was a BoS scribe in hopes they'd consider him worth keeping alive. And that story simply got out of hand as events progressed. And the cactus quibble? Maybe the great war changed the climate. I've yet to see changing seasons in any FO game.

    I was thinking perhaps the term "Scribe" isn't entirely unique to the Brotherhood and that it may be used interchangeably with "Scientist". Though of course that's not the case in any of the other games and it isn't used anywhere else in Tactics to refer to anybody other than actual Brotherhood Scribes.

    You’ve even got people who grow cacti in more humid gulf coast states like Florida, Mississippi, Alabama, or Louisiana. Maybe they were popular plants pre-war, even if they weren’t native to the area. Just like how radscorpions or deathclaws inevitably started in one location and slowly spread throughout the wasteland over a very long time.

    I mean, the beginning is semi-salvagable since we can assume the separated chapter lost parts of its history with presence of a narrator in Game Over screens its a retold version of the story. Similarly with purpose of the vaults - since most vaults were described as business of survival, BoS members would likely be unaware of experimental nature of vaults.

Still it would be great if Bethesda would decide what was actually cannon going forward.

Especially if the good ending is the canonical one one where the Brotherhood of Steel is actually trying to fix the Wasteland by banding together with a what the super mutants ghouls and even intelligent deathclaws. Looking to rebuild it not at constant war with it like the rest of the Brotherhood. Hair braids as War cross the Wasteland basically just trying to find the tiniest piece of technology that they're not going to do anything with. Neutral/Evil warrior where they're basically a high tech less stupid evil Caesar's Legion, Barnaky where they're outright villainous, or the ending where you break the calculator and they end up massively overstretched without its help. The pure good ending is way too promising and outshines all the other regions from all the other games.

    For the Super Mutants: I can buy average and higher intellect mutants migrating en masse (would you want to be surrounded by idiots?). There are no details on how many the Master dipped, so even a rarity of 1% with most of their faculties intact would just require a higher number dipped. That's assuming the Master didn't find another vault and dip them prior to Fallout 1 (very unlikely with the known area explored in the first two games). As for Mutie: While I'm not familiar with the flavor text, I do know its a sci-fi staple to synthesize drugs from different creatures' blood. In real-life, certain snake owners take a shot of snake venom to get intoxicated (assuming no ulcers, as it kills in the bloodstream, but intoxicates through ingestion). That's not to mention snake oil, ground rhino horns, and the like used as mystic "cure alls." Point being, you can use more than raw FEV to make such a drug, depending on how "science is magic" you go.

    I was amazed that a (very minor) plot hole in Tactics was mended in 76, of all places, with the Whitespring bunker. It showed a bunker that looked for all the world like a Vault, complete with a numberless Vault door, but it wasn't a true Vault. I don't think that was put in the game with the intention of fixing the Tactics mistake, but it still did.

  • @derekmichno5894

    I can rationalize the assumed contradictions of the tactics brotherhood as the story itself is told from their perspective and even more so from the perspective of the outcasted BOS members. There could have been a military vault that built itself up and then merged with the Brotherhood of Steel at some point leading to two deeply rooted - opposite - ideologies and motivations based on past experiences. Half of the BOS is focused on technology acquisition based on the experiences at Lost Hills and the other half wanting to help people having been brought up in the military vault. During the schism and subsequent exile, the military vault BOS and its allies move east and take with them a history that is unknown to the people where they are going so they change it. They make themselves the "real" BOS and write their own slightly twisted version of its origins. There was clearly a deep hatred towards the West Coast BOS from the exiled members, so it would not be unreasonable for them to do this. Similar things have happened in real life countless times. It also would ensure their future as if there was a day the West Coast BOS came, the people in the area would believe them to be imposters or some other such thing. The fact the story is being read from a book that cuts to the game almost implies that the story you play is already written and being told in some future time that makes the "real" BOS a perfect force in the Wasteland that escaped the clutches of a desperate group of misguided usurpers. Obviously, this is just opinion. But it allows me to take the game as almost a type of in-universe fiction. Bethesda must believe some version of this as they have told versions of this story in both Fallout 3 and Fallout 76 featuring the BOS splitting off from itself over concerns of ideology and direction. It is unlikely that if both were to have continued in these directions, they would have made the West Coast BOS out to be the "real" BOS. They would say, the West Coast BOS were the ones who lost their way. So for the Tactics BOS, they are just writing themselves out to be the good guys as anyone would do.

    Fallout 4 had many cut concepts. One of them involved Super Soldiers of the BoS. This was from an earlier BoS concept lead, still lead by Maxson, which wasn’t as...closed minded; recruiting ghouls for dangerously radiated recon missions. In this old concept, Brian Virgil was to become a BoS member after some convincing on both ends, with samples of his blood being used to procure a cure and stabilizer for the FEV. With this the FEV was finally going to be perfected resulting in Super Mutants who were captured being cured and returning to their human forms or stabilized as a super soldier. In the game files we could find a file referencing BoS Super Mutants with a model which depicts a grayish skinned Super Mutant of slightly shorter stature, with faint hair regrowth and even facial hair.

    The micro-sledge in Vault 0 is most likely battlefield salvage, though it doesn't explain the other one. I suspect Harold's appearance and the Improved power armor are the result of some or all of the staff being convinced that the game was set after Fallout 2. So they made "Herbert" physically more developed than in 2, and assumed the BoS had time to study and modify Enclave power armor.

    I would argue that the mammalian Deathclaws isn't "wrong," but a separate species entirely that ended up with the same name, possibly derived the same pre-war military project. The vehicles also aren't necessarily wrong. You can power engines with a variety of fuels derived from non-fossil fuel oils. Multi-fuel engines were a Cold War era development as many nations knew that in the cold-war-gone-hot situation finding refined gasoline or diesel might be difficult. Tanks in particular were made to be able to drink anything you can give them. Supply trucks also had multi-fuel engines for decades, but it was expensive to do and they mostly switched to either gas or diesel engines by the end of the 80s. Basically, as long as you have agriculture and distillation facilities, you can make fuel.

    Car nut here. The presence of oil does not necessarily mean that it runs on gasoline. Oil is a lubricant for moving parts, be it natural oil extracted from the ground or synthetic. Electric cars don't need oil because they have very few moving parts. Fallout's nuclear cars verly likely use a multitude of greases and oils, as evidenced by oil cans dotting garages and factories. The statement "it's burning oil" though, DOES indicate the vehicles are using either gasoline or diesel engines, as that is the phenomenon of engine oil blowing past the piston rings and burning up with the fuel, as indicated by a nasty smoke coming out the exhaust. Game still gets it wrong.

    I would like to propose an alternative explanation to why the vaults in TF can be both constructed by Vault Tec and even advertised by Vault Tec with their marketing, while not serving the same purpose or even being directly ran by Valut Tec. Rich and famous of the pre-war America surely wanted an insurance policy in case the war came, but spots in the Vault Tec vaults could never really be guaranteed. We saw many of these vaults across other games and they often had very specific target for who comes in, or were very very small, to a point where they could only conceivably host a few dozen people. The vaults in mid-west are different. Vault 0 is a great example, it was meant to be gigantic with freaking hunting grounds. It's not impossible that some interest groups funded construction of their own vault system, manufactured by Vault Tec, but as we heard in the lore bits, managed by a committee of the investors. I don't think that was the intention of the game devs, but it's not an inconceivable explanation, and Vault Tec could very likely agree to this if for no other reason than to use the funds from this to make their actual experimental vaults.

    This is just an fyi, I get a lot of people dont know this, but cars today take a synthetic oil instead of conventional, in a lot of cases. I think it doesn't matter that the migration to the Midwest wasn't that long ago, in F1 one of the scribe Sophia tells the player that the BoS doesn't care about their history and the story we are told by the BoS is that Roger Maxson lead and exodus to Lost Hills but they didn't know from where, we only learn about their tue origins of the BoS form Captain Maxson's diary in the Mariposa Base, It's posible many in the Brotherhood still didn't know where they came from when they left When you ask John Maxson about the BoS History he says "All of us grew up on this" and gives you "Maxson log" and it's only Maxson's order to move to Lost Hills, scribe Sophia also said that "the new initiates don't even know who Roger Maxson is or what exactly he did for us", so if the people that later left to the Midwest still had the same education they wouldn't know their actual story Even Caesar in Fallout New Vegas talks about them not knowing who Roger Maxson was

    Its sad given that what happens in Tactics is interesting story wise and world changing story. I also liked few things - That there is a progressive branch of Brotherhood that lets supermutants and even deathclaws join their ranks and ride in buggies or Shermans alongside ghouls and humans. - Inteligent deathclaws that can lockpick doors, drive vehicles and even administer first aid (yes, deathclaws cannot sure weapons but they can use items, defuse bombs and use healing items) - You get to ride around in WW 2 era, fully functional M4 Sherman and even this average (for its time) tank is like a rolling nightmare for wastelanders because they arent used to fight actual tanks that need proper trashing to put down, it working also means that Eastern Brotherhood can manufacture fuel for it (which would be i guess etanol or some bio crap they could create given that oil is no go) Mechanic is probably full of crap and calls etanol oil because he doesnt know the difference. - SO MANY WEAPONS, i am pretty sure Tactics has the most weapons in the entire franchise, they also acknowledged that Europe exist by including tons of foreign weapons like Steyer, Scorpion and more - Weapons could fire multitude of ammo types, armour piercing, rubber pellets, armour piercing missiles etc... - Revolutionary RTS/TBS gameplay mode so you can play it in real time or as previous fallouts - You can have super mutants, ghouls, dogs, deathclaws and even a robot in your team and nobody raises an eyebrow. And despite there being only a single robotic companion the devs went the long way to include the fact that you cannot heal him with stimpacks and instead you repair him with toolkit you can otherwise use for vehicles.

The man was indeed a scribe, but he was newly recruited by the brotherhood and had yet to make his way over to their main base of operations, him wanting to “join the brotherhood” perhaps doesn’t literally mean “join the brotherhood” by that he means join them as in he was going to join them at their main base and was taken by raiders, he was a scribe but a newly conscripted one and hadn’t yet made his way to “join” the brotherhood at their main operations base, but I don’t know that’s just my theory.

    Alternatively, I can see the Brotherhood's presence in the area introducing the word 'scribe' to be adopted to mean any seeker of knowledge, so he may have considered himself a 'scribe' in the general sense, but was not (yet) a ' _Brotherhood_ Scribe'.

    Starting at 16:58 through to 17:12, I think you're slightly misunderstanding why the FEV virus was producing stupid Super Mutants after the nuclear war. The lieutenant Super Mutant says that the FEV virus itself was mutated because of the nuclear radiation from the atomic bombs dropped which effectively made them harmless. This mutated - harmless - strain in turn infected the wastlanders. When the Master tried to infect these wastlanders with the original strain of FEV, they were inoculated from some of its effects - like increased intelligence - because of the mutated strain of FEV already in their bodies. The Master is thus searching for people who were not infected by the mutated FEV strain which would only be people who were not exposed to the environment of the Wasteland - like the vault dwellers. It's a similar concept to inoculating people against the Small Pox virus with the Cow Pox virus.

    I know this game has its bugs and lore issues, but I also love it because of them. Take for example the "prone inside a car bug". Does it make sense that it increases the 3 weapon skills? No, it doesn't. Can it make ridiculously powerful companions? Yes... but after repeating it many times. But is it useful?... EXTREMELY. With such a vast character roster, this game had the potential of becoming something like pokemon, where you had characters to choose, but never the time to try them all. HOWEVER, with this bug, you do have the opportunity to switch your team as many times you want, explore their perks, races and attributes and although it's a bug left behind by the developers, it's one of the things I loved about this game. It may have its quirks, but still gives me the itch to play it once in a while and find another crazy thing that can make me smile.

    Tactics was the first Fallout game I ever played, so I've always had something of a soft spot for it. Once I'd played FO1, 2 & eventually 3, I mostly thought of it as a mad-max dungeon crawler with a patchy Fallout paint job, but it's still one I've fond memories of, and I still go back and re-play it every few years. As for the lore problem regarding Vault 0, while this isn't *my* pet theory, it's one I liked enough since I first read it to share here, in Teal Deer format: Valut 0 was designed as a dumping ground for dead weight within Vault-Tec, the Enclave, US Government and potentially a few other smaller actors. Not out of deliberate collaboration, it likely started as Vault-Tec sweeping internal trash into a corner were it would have minimal consequences to the rest of corporation or their plans. But as such things are wont to do, it eventually grew larger than planned, drawing in outside attention, who seeing both a place to dump undesired individuals, *with their cooperation*, and a patsy to boot, well, it makes sense to me how Vault 0 ended up as it did.

    I, personally, liked this game and find it easy to reincorporate elements into any larger cannon. Some of the names have to be changed to match, a few errors trimmed, and the conclusion needs a 'both fail' result to self contain... but it can fit into the known cannon better then some other fallout titles. When I put together table-top games of the region, I include most of the lore from Tactics and Van Buren to flesh out this large swath of land. Poor mutants though - find a bunch of accepting humans and they still get wiped out by some external threat. It is a repeating tragedy that is throughout the Fallout series, but one day Marcus... one day. Oh Master, if you only took a moment to think more about the caterpillar, our plan could still have worked.

    Basically where I'm sitting too. Tactic's lore hickups aren't as unsalvagable as other elements that showed up in Fallouts later, and even the worst ones just need a bit of TLC or a handwave comment to fix. If anything the only real grumble is the intro text and that's probably the easiest part, as it'd probably be less likely to be brought up again if Brotherhood Midwest ever appeared again.

    This is a comment on a year old video but I think it’s worth mentioning the idea of the Vaults being purely experimental comes from Fallout 2 writer Chris Avellone, there’s a quote about him watching “too much X-Files” in between writing Fallout 1 and Fallout 2 from another of the game’s designers, (this quote as far as I can tell us completely lost to time as far as I can tell, it may have been in the Fallout Bible). So Fallout Tactics lore is more inline with the original lore.

    I would argue that the brotherhood should very much be able to have land vehicles if they're already sending their people across the country in zeplins. The engineering of a single zeplin(let alone a fleet that needs to communicate with eachother) is way more complicated than any internal combustion vehicle and most of the midwest is pretty flat compared to the west and east coast where a land vehicle would be much less useful without real roads. Also theres nothing stating the brotherhood didnt just straight kidnap that dude that rebuilt the car and force him to work for them if their behavior in New vegas and 4 is their standard M.O.
