Very good comprehensive video about the show, just one thing, the scooter that Emily and Gabrielle rode in episode 7 isn't actually his, it's a scooter sharing service like the bikes, you can see the "C" in a blue circle on it and the name of the company "cityscoot", also I am pretty sure you will find only one helmet in it. I don't know where they picked up the second one and it's electric, they added some motor noise which those electic scooters don't make.

I shipped 30+ large containers of peanut butter (for my kids) to Europe while we lived there!! I also brought tons back in my suitcases each time I made a trip back to the US. I also shipped lots of cereal as they don't have the same kinds we do NOR are they made the same there. And IF you can find a certain US cereal it is $13 US dollars there! I use to pay $9.75 just for grape jelly for their PBJ sandwiches. They serve a lot of weird soups (main meal) at kids schools there and mine would not eat it. American "kid" friendly foods are very expensive there IF you can even find it. And I was in a MAJOR city. (also shipped lots of Mac N Cheese)

Wait wasn't the whole subtext of the show that the firm in Chicago bought out the firm in Paris and therefore the new Paris branch was supposed to be the American branch of this company in Paris. Therefore Emily was sent to Paris to transition workers into the American operational fold? At-least that's my understanding. So from this standpoint, I thought that this show was pretty good.

It’s basically a fanfic. Also she just starts speaking English to strangers without saying “excuse me do you speak English” that’s just plain rude ew

yea and even then she probably wouldn’t have that much luck. Nine times out of ten when I’ve asked people in France if they speak English they said “no but apparently you speak french” lol. And to be fair why would they have to speak English? Plenty of people know french. (That was rural France, so obviously it’s very different in Paris, but still, not everyone would know perfectly understandable English with a minor accent from the get go.)

If the main character doesn’t change, your show has a problem.

@@jazmincastro3808 for me I just found the whole “America Best!!!!” thing a little much. I think it’s the way she did it. She kinda rocked up assuming her opinions were right, didn’t like being told the way she was raised wouldn’t fly. I see where you’re coming from with the assimilation idea BUT I’m not looking at assimilation here I’m more looking at acceptance. I’m up to episode 6 and not once have I seen Emily try and see things from the French POV. Also from a series standpoint this affected her character arch.

United States is a multilingual nation and if I’m speaking Spanish with my friends or family and you come up to me and ask me to speak English because this is “America” then yes, that would be considered to be racist. By the way “America” is the whole continent not just the USA.

Like we say Korea and not south korea or even rok in casual speaking, although there is north korea/dprk. Which, in a documentary north koreans prefer to be called dprk. And even dprk is short for democratic people's republic of korea. Anyway...it's just short hand speaking.

It’s not rude at all, it happens in some areas like IT, Universities, Research Institutes, etc. In Science happens all the time to have people from different countries who use English as their common language. Because most only stay periods of 4 to 5 years many don’t learn the local language. Because they don’t need it.

Emilys comment about the metro irritated me. It made me wonder if the writers actually think the metro in Paris is hard. When my dad and I visited Paris we kept talking about how efficient their metro system is, and we've taken public transit in many different countries. It was so simple

The show was an Homage to Devil Wears Prada, but it is not a Parody! The whole subway things was base on the Footnote, That Miranda Priestly never allow any of her assistants to take the SUBWAYs of New York!!!!! Never!!!!

The thing that did it for me was the "People usually love me". I've encountered many Americans with that mindset and I automatically put them in my "mind trash". I hate when people congratulate themselves

If there is a season two I'll hope it will be Emily in Amsterdam (my hometown) where all Dutch people are stoned all day, visit prostitutes, wear wooden shoes and speak incredibly blunt

Was the show a dumpster fire of offensive stereotypes? Absolutely. Would I watch a second season? Probably. I'm such a sucker for cheesy unrealistic shows.

Imagine, still going to take the job in Paris, being a single pregnant woman in 30s/40s while facing challenge to assimilate with the culture respectfully and being a (pregnant) boss. I discussed this point with a friend of mine last week, and I think it wouldn't be a rational choice for Emily's boss to go to work in Paris, for the following reasons. Emily's boss is starting to have the morning sickness, which means that she must be AT LEAST at the fifth week of pregnancy. (At least, because morning sickness tend to get stronger after that.) This means she has eight months of pregnancy to go. She probably wants her baby to be born in the US, which means she will have to return to Chicago before the end of the pregnancy. In France, a woman is allowed to up to 16 weeks of maternity leave. Even is Emily's boss does not want to take the whole maternity leave, she is required by law to take at least 8 weeks: this is the law, she cannot take less time than that. 8 weeks amount to roughly 2 months. So, maybe Emily's boss would like to go back to the US at the end of her 8th month and then stay there a month longer. Since she is at least in her second month and since she will have to return to the US at the end of her 8th month, it means that she is moving to the other side of the world for seven months. Is this a rational choice? I don't think so. Instead, she sent Emily for one year. She will have time to have her baby and to sort things out, then maybe she will go to Paris and replace Emily when her baby will be already at least 4 months old. Seems a better option to me.

@@LexiLSify financially, yes, but maybe she would like to be surrounded by her family and friends, instead of going through the pregnancy, birth and first months of caring the baby in a country which is not her own and where she doesn't know anybody: I mean, let's be realistic! That's why she sent Emily in Paris for one year: she can have her baby in the US and then move to Paris with no stress: THIS is the more rational decision, financially and personally!

I was feeling bad of not liking her attitude. I feel this portrayed more the American belief of coming to a country and expect everyone to speak English. I’m not saying all tourists do this but is super common for them to expect they can travel all over the world (specially developing countries) and find someone that speaks English. For non-English countries, is almost a require to speak English if you want to travel abroad. I don’t feel related at all with her attitude. Oh and the scene where she wants to “teach” the chef how to cook a steak IN PARIS. The chef denied to cook it again, and she complain saying the customer is always right, then her friend said, no here is not like that... then she said well maybe i can teach them good customer services. So arrogant. UPDATE: Please my intention was not to generate hate towards a culture. I intended to put out the privilege some countries/people have over developing countries and many other countries in terms of language, currency, etc. It’s nothing against anyone, just my personal opinion as a third-world-country citizen that I felt very conscious about the “privilege” I don’t have when I travel. Please don’t fight below this comment, I’m not trying to generate hate, just awareness of the current situation that divide us as humans, so let’s not generate more division. Sorry if I offended anyone.

I've seen it with my eyes all the time in Italy, when Americans ask for parmesan on seafood, or ice in red wine, and if the waiter tells them that's not the way they would all go in the "customer is the king"-mode.

@vale michelle It's a cultural thing. When you go out to eat in a French restaurant the chef is your host so you treat it as you would going out to dinner at a friend's house ie, you trust him to have done a good job and you graciously accept what he has taken care over to cook and season for you. That is why the waiter says, 'try it'. The white tablecloth, the glasses, the ambience are all as important to the dining experience as the food and you are the 'guest'. I understand your perspective but that is the French culture.

I find unrealistic to expect tourists to speak the local language, we’re not all polyglots. English is the easiest one, because it’s a simple language, we all learn at school and even Europeans use it to speak with each other, do business, despite not being their native tongue.

let's all talk about the fact that the over 20 Chanel outfits she wears (Loubs, and others are in there too) would cost something like 100 000 Euros (118 000 USD) at least. A junior marketer in social media in their 20s in France might make a grand total of MAYBE 30 000 euros BEFORE tax, so let's say they'd have 19 000 Euros of actual money to spend on everything in the whole year (apartment, transportation, food.....) seing as she's clearly not paying for her apartment but living in Paris, this means she's making a rough 1 600 Euros per month, 300 Euros to 500 Euros one taxi transport, she also never cooks so if she's eating out at nice places it will cost her 65 Euros per meal, she does this 5 times a week and letting friends feed her all her 3 meals a day on week ends, so she spends 1040 Euros a month on food assuming she has no lunch or breakfast. This means she's got 1 600 - (1000 + 500) = 100 Euros left of money to spend on her phone bill, her water and gas and electricity bill, so she' be left with about 20 Euros a month of expendable income. To afford her designer wardrobe she'd have to work 416 YEARS at constant inflation rates.

Relax. It’s a “feel good” show, a fairy tale 🙂 do you analyze Cinderella like this? Now that I said that, I should mention that the show also has iconic tributes to Audrey Hepburn (opera look) and Sex and the City show (LOTS of outfit tributes to Carrie), and all of this is about becoming a nationally favorite show (which I think is accomplished), not about being real and true to salary levels and cost of living. If it bothers you, maybe you should work on canceling the entire culture of fairy tales and feel good movies?

I was kind of hoping for a show where people that moved to Paris could identify with, showing and making fun of "real Paris problems" such as the extremely small yet expensive studios, the crazy people on the street, the smell of piss, the crowded metros (and sometimes huge metro stations) and the language barrier that people encounter when moving there, to name a few. Maybe it was naive to expect that this show would be made for people that have a connection with Paris, and their 'struggles' and 'pleasures'. Unfortunately for me (and for us) it is indeed not the case, it seems that the show is made for Americans that don't live abroad to give them something to 'dream about'. I understand, yet I am indeed worried that people think this is really what Paris is like.

Forgetting all the cultural ignorance, I found it pretty laughable how much she talks about feminism and the male gaze yet every person in this series is stereotypically beautiful, skinny and fashionable, and emily herself seems to be loving it. You can't talk about average people when you only show the 1 percent. Maybe it gets better but I had to give up after 3 episodes.

In Brazil, Ground floor is always referred as T for térreo, which means "on the ground", or "relative to the ground ". I guess we consider it like, 1st floor from Ground, 2nd floor from the Ground, and so on.

Paris seemed very clean in my opinion. They obviously wanted to show the best places but it seemed inaccurate.

I've stayed a few days in Paris and it was quite clean. I didn't spend any time in the suburbs, I've heard those aren't clean. I stuck to the core of the city, which was clean.

also one of the main issues is that generally, to anyone that is not french (and that's an issue that doesn't just relate to Emily in Paris) is the : Paris = France equation, which is total BS, because there is so much more to France than just Paris. I'm french but I'm not patriotic or particularly proud of my culture, but there is something to say about the fact that Paris is just a city in France and not representative at all of the whole country !

So true. I lived in France for about a year and half. Spent a lot of time in the north and in Normandy. Paris is beautiful but there is so much more to France. A lot of French people, or anyone who isn't American, think NYC=America. Or cowboys=America.

Whoever wrote the script is kinda disrespecting the audience's intelligence .... it is like a teenager, with no much life/cultural experiences sitting in his/her bedroom and fantasised the whole thing, and Netflix was like: yeah, no problem, that's how dumb the viewers are, the'd just love the dresses and the very unrealistic, Disney version of Paris.

@@Whofuckencares808 I see it in my circle of friends, at my work place and in my own life. It does happen. Maybe it depends on country, culture and age and doesn't happen everywhere. But where I'm from, it's not that unrealistic to have ~40% of men you meet (about the ratio of Emily, there r quite a few men who didn't fell for her in the show) to have a crush on you... It's not necessarily a blessing.

When you come to USA, they tell you to speak English or go back to your country. Yet an American goes to France and everyone has to speak English to her. Hhmmmm “the American way is the right way” that’s all I got from this show.

This video is so accurate! I liked the show but I had to recognize that it was very shallow and unrealistic. Another flaw that I think it had was that they showed this beautiful clean Paris where there is no poverty or dodgy areas. There is an Indian film called "queen" which accurately portrays Paris as being kind of dangerous for a young girl alone and I think they should have shown this side too. Well done on the video!

And the weird thing is there a lot more Americans then most people would think that are fine with substitute. Like there are so many people who love foreign films and then you got the anime community (which is pretty huge) the reads shows that has 100’s if episode and are completely fine with it. I think it’s more the production and film community not believing and scared that most people are actually find with it. And should treat their audiences like actual adult who can read and trust them.

I feel like Americans have a problem with subtitles in general. I love seeing movies and tv shows that have multiple languages in them, even if I need subtitles to understand. My favourite example is probably “the Durrells” which is about a British family moving to a Greek island. There the Greeks speak to each other in Greek and there’s a nice balance of the two.

Glad to see someone smart enough to see this show's problem: It promotes Americentrism and Cultural Imperialism. This show isn't just bad, it's WRONG.

And the show feels DATED. It came out LAST WEEK, but it feels like an older man writer trying to be hip and cool, and 'here is what the instagram gen are #ing about'. To me it proves Darren Starr should do nothing without Michael Patrick King, cause clearly Sex and the City was a fluke for Starr.

I'm Greek, and in Europe in general almost everyone speaks English and we so tend to accommodate tourists and speak exclusively English to them. In that sense it's kinda sorta true... But. French people in particular take great pride in their language, and unless it's a touristic place they will speak you almost exclusively French. However Emily is in Paris. Paris is a tourists attraction. People will speak English. Also Europeans tend to speak English in front of tourists, because it's considered rude to talk in front of someone without them knowing what your saying and makes people uncomfortable. No conclusion here. Great video.

Actually Parisian hate to be forced to speak english especially if that said foreigner/tourist is extremely rude about it (like Emily), and even if they do most of them still have a really heavy French accent and simple vocabulary (except for people with higher education in English or if they work a lot around tourists) so no, having this many Parisians understanding/speaking perfect english to Emily with no difficulties is really not realistic. Even if I agree that most Europeans tend to have a pretty decent English and a lot of times even know an other extra language depending on the nearest country.

I've been to Paris, amongst other places. It is true that a lot of customer service staff speak English. However walking through the streets and through shopping malls or restaurants, you mostly just hear French. People talk to each other in French, not English. I was sometimes addressed in English by the staff at restaurants by they assumed I was foreign. Otherwise it was French only. I find it so obnoxious that a person can go to a foreign country and be upset that they don't speak your language. You're in THEIR home.

Being a tourist kinda gives you a pass on not speaking the language , but having a job in a foreign country is different , the least you could do is try to learn and practice the language to not come off as disrespectful to the co-workers and the culture .

I am a 78 year old woman, and my impression of this show which I quite enjoyed - we’re still in “Lockdown” in Melbourne for the last 6 months, so this was a lighthearted view of Paris. My view is that it underlines the what I perceive as the American idea that there is no other world but America. A fraction patronising towards the French!!

Not only patronising, but also condescending in the way it portrays the majority of Emily’s co-workers as being completely fine with sexual harassment, including one of the firm’s clients sending her an extremely inappropriate gift and then brushing it off as him wanting her to enjoy herself. Plus it’s a straight up parody of how work-obsessed Americans seem to view the French - apparently they regularly take two hour lunches and turn up for work at 10 or 11 AM. It’s tiny bit absurd and obnoxious.

I think the “I watched American tv” part was her answering to how she knows English.

You enter the building on the ground floor and go up to the 1st floor in every country I've traveled to except America.

Target audience 13 years old ? Cupcake Emily goes to Fantasy Land ! If this show was on Disney Channel , she will be the queen . Disney should be airing this show.

Maisa Lohay Grow a Brain! The show does not Pretend to be something that was not Inspired by the Prada movie!!! It is ON YOUR FACE inspired by Andrea Sachs! Except that it is not a Parody or attempt to copy!!! Learn this! Being inspired by something great is not necessarily a cheap immitation. Emily is nothinh like Andrea Sachs. Andrea is not into Fashion at all! Emily is also Sexually liberated unlike 98.98% of those pretentious people who hate it.

Emily also has an attitude that shows she doesn't want to learn French, like that scene at the American Dinner where both she and the woman are mocking the way the French speak. I really hope this show is cancelled.

tbh though, that is fairly accurate. I have lived in abroad for almost 6 years now, and there is a specific type of foreigner (the ones who fully embrace the label "expat") who lives in a little bubble of expat friends, complains endlessly about the local behavior/norms/culture, and never learns the language or makes more than a token local friend (ahem Camille ahem). It's gross and confusing (why don't they just leave) but imo, this show captured that cringe. Whether the intention was to create a repellant protagonist who embodies the superiority complex of a rich expat is another question tho...

i honestly don't care about france or paris but the lack of actual diversity in this show just baffles me. paris is an EXTREMELY diverse city and ALL of emily's love interests are white??? also: the characters mindy and julien kinda perpetuate stereotypes.

@@FlorenceFire France has a strong colonial background. French-Guiana in South America is still a colony. Several countries in Africa speak french because of this (e.g. Senegal) and many have emigrated to France, especially when they were not indipendent nations yet. Furthermore, Paris as a city is one of the most famous cities in the world, a place that attracts millions of tourists from all over the world. Showing diversity in Paris is not forced, not showing it is mostly fictitious ;)

I feel like in the first few episodes they tried having her feel out of place because everyone speaks French. By the end of the series, two french men are talking in English with Emily not around. That's when my suspension of disbelief stopped.

I have visited Paris 3-4 years ago for just 3 days 2 nights. In that short time I experienced a lot of bad times from the people: - one suitcase was stolen in the high speed train to Paris - my wife's purse was almost pickpocketed in the inner city tram. - we were being served last in a greek restaurant even though we arrived earlier than the other guests. - i was drawn lousily by a "caricaturist" near the Eiffel Tower who demanded me to pay 20 Euro for that piece of crap - I asked direction to a shopkeeper and got ignored So yes, the stereotype that Parisiens are not friendly has some truth in it.

This is the internet so don't mind my seemingly condescending tone : -We deal with pickpocketing and stealing everyday in the Paris area (île de France), just be careful with your stuff like you would do in any major city. -Pickpockets target mainly tourists. Again, be super careful with you belongings, don't show you have cash on you especially if you're speaking another language and showing you're a tourist. (also it's a métro, how is a tram running underground ?) -This is 100% on you. Who TF goes to any street artist let alone "caricaturist" in Paris (or any capital for that matter) and expect anything good ? -everybody has data now, use your phone like a normal person. Also there are maps literally on street signs so you can avoid to ask people for directions. Good luck next time!

The Tokyo people are super friendly and helpful, and no one is stealing anything. i once saw a digital camera left alone on a museum bench. 2 hours later it's still there.

@@MsCarotty yes, from that 'caricaturist' lesson, i won't respond to any random strangers on the street ever again. yes, it was the metro, not the tram (sorry for the misnomer). about the pickpocketing, i am also come from a major city, Jakarta, with 5 times the population of Paris. I ride public transport quite often and go to crowded places at times and so far never got pickpocketed. Even though generally the population of Jakarta is poorer.

You mean there’s GASP, crime in a major city, that attracts tourists? What a shock. That happens everywhere. Also, one shopkeeper being mildly rude to you isn’t a good point from which to stereotype the population of an entire city.

I haven't watched the show but I saw a clip of her sending her steak back at what appeared to be a fancy restaurant; I've never eaten at a super high end restaurant but I'm PRETTY sure that is considered extremely rude. Also Emily wears a lot of expensive clothing for someone who(I'm assuming) lives middle class, if not below.

I was annoyed at how she didn't speak French at all... BUT what was the MOST annoying was how French characters spoke English even when having private conversations between each other or when she was not around ? LOOOL never gonna happen here. French people even switch to French when they're in front of a foreigner... 🤣🤣 (That can seem rude I know... But it's hard not to). I speak fluent English but when I was in Englanf I had a group of French friends and when we were hanging with foreigners, speaking English, we would always switch back to French at some point when talking to each other. That was bad. I'm sorry... But that proves how unrealistic it is in the show. Because these people are in their freaking country !!!! They are having meetings in English because of this ONE girl ??? No no. Learn French Emily !!!! One thing though, and I'm not trying to defend Emily but when Camille says she grew up watching a lot of American TV shows its because Emily was asking how she spoke such good English... But because she was nice ?

I think the problem with Emily and the french language is not supposed to be rude but to make fun of US Americans who mostly speak no other language than English. This is the feeling I get from most of the scenes. It is not supposed to offend the french but to make fun of Americans and their point of view. - Emily orders peanut butter and doesn't want to taste the steak at first -> poor taste - thinks the Metro is complicated -> Americans only use taxis Heck, she even seems totally disappointed when it rained one day like she thought there is no rain in this city of fantasy lol I wouldn't take this so seriously from both sides, nothing problematic about the show. I am german and even I can laugh about cliches

I thought she is learning french. She is in a french class. I think the show is teasing her accent. Also, her going to france was very out of nowhere. No one can learn an entire language in a week. And she has her little translator to help and doesn't expect people to speak english.

This is exactly how I felt about the show pushing the "American way" as being better than the French way, when she is working for a French agency working with French clients... Where is her American way even needed? As a French expat who works in Social Media, I was honestly baffled by this show and I found it so offensive I couldn't even finish the season. Lily Collins is such a a good actress, I feel like anyone else in the role of Emily wouldn’t just have been cringe but outright unbearable

Yes this review is so on point! Emily’s lack of character development was one of the biggest problems for me on top of the problematic cultural representations but it is very pretty haha

I live in Israel, and work at a place where a lot of American's visit or even work and I have to say - they are very rude, they are trying to change our work attics and that's annoying, to be honest.

I think this is a tv show that says a lot more about American culture than French culture. It’s insular bordering on xenophobic and while I’m enjoying it because it’s light, fluffy and set in Paris, I think they could have made it a lot more real and interesting without alienating the American Hollywood-version-of-France-obsessed viewers it caters to. I’ve got lots of colour and patterns in my wardrobe and rarely wear black, but even so, find Patricia Fields’ creations often cross the border from colourful, creative and expressive into garish and ridiculous and I would love to see more of a juxtaposition with simple French fashions and acknowledgement of French style. Similarly, the French intellectual tradition and exploration of French discipline and manners would be interesting. The other thing that really bugs me about this show is the portrayal of Sylvie as a kind of reincarnated evil stepmother in the mould of fairytales of yore, threatened by the young and beautiful Emily. In a post me too era, this type of stereotype is annoying, especially since all the older men are clever and there is an implication that they are immediately able to see that Emily should clearly be running the company. Very much catering to a millennial audience. Emily behaves inappropriately on so many levels in the workplace, but the lack of respect not only of Sylvie’s role and position but her knowledge and experience spoils the show for me. But hey, the real star here is Paris. It provides a visual feast and an opportunity to travel vicariously while we’re all grounded and to contemplate how much better we would all behave, how much more we would all learn and how much more advantage we would take of this opportunity if it were extended to us instead of Emily!

For me as an expat, I also feel there is so little about culture chocks, just anecdotic or for humor. French leaving in Asia I questioned my self a lot in my first months even year. I learned a lot about the cultures, but also about myself. I guess it's mentioned about her not growing. But I was really looking forward something to recognize myself in this show in that dimension, and even this part is highly stereopical. Her first friend is Asian, but quite frankly she sound more American than Chinese, or at least I don't recognize any of my Chinese friends in her.

I absolutely agree that someone moving to Paris and expecting everyone to speak English is ridiculous and a complete fantasy but the fact that the French characters themselves speak English to each other tells you all you need to know about the realism of this show. It’s a complete fantasy full of exaggerations and too-good-to-be-true scenarios but that’s what it’s supposed to be and it’s actually pretty hilarious and fun.

CAN U JUST GET IT'S A FREAKING SHOW? Plus! It depends on which kind of life she's living. i lived in Paris and worked in Hermès, surrounded myself but high society, and honestly, that is the life you get when you are around high Parisian society. Forget the metro, parce que ca pue, donc alors, ils prennent les taxis ou leurs scouters ou sinon leur voitures. I know the show it's very cliché but it represents one version of life that Paris can offer.

Reasons why I LOATHE Emily ( and Emily in Paris ) . EMILY IS A WALKING OFFENSE TO THE FRENCH - she refuses to learn the language, is atrociously ignorant of European culture, is a two-timing friend to both Mindy and Camille, and the sole reason why Gabriel left Camille for Emily... . The show is a literal cliche souffle filled with inaccurate and offensive stereotypes of both the Chinese and French. As a Chinese, I find Mindy's character INSULTING AF. . Gabriel is 1000 times worse than Mr. Big and Chuck Bass ( I hate them too ). I'm sorry. FYI I would LOVE to see Emily meeting the executives of Chanel and VOGUE IN PERSON AND GET HER OUTFITS MURDEROUSLY INSULTED BY THEM. Hell, maybe even ANNA WINTOUR can guest star in ONE EPISODE. Also, I would LOVE to see Camille severe ties with Emily in Season 2 and go have a new life in another luxury company ( that is rival to Savoir - KARMA HITS LIKE A TRUCK ). Maybe even a new, better partner of any gender.

@@LiLChiLi_ I only watched the first episode just because it is made by the creators of Sex and the City and Devil Wears Prada ( THOSE 2 I ADORED WITH INTENSE PASSION ) I had exceedingly high expectations for Emily in Paris before the pilot....and then the characters fell way past my expectations. Maybe that is the main reason I hate the show so much. Oh, and there are some characters that are downright offensive. I never watched another episode of Emily in Paris again.

I was in France and found many people generally rude until they realized who you were or who you were associated with, as in "Oh. You're a client? Okay, I'll be nice" or "Oh, you came here with a friend of mine? Ok, I'll show my friendly side this time." I imagine from their perspective they were just ambivalent or indifferent, but it really comes off rude.

Imagine her going to Indonesia and tried to teach them the American way, they would caci maki the hell outta herrr 😩😩❤️

She didn't have to, because WAS able to get the information across, that she wanted to buy the roses (she said flower in French, then said roses in French in a wrong pronunciation, and also pointed at the roses/even gravbed them in her hands). It's impossible that the flower lady didn't understand that she was interested in buying those roses. The flower lady then intentionally refused to sell her the nice roses and and said "these are not for you" and gave her other less nice ones (still roses, but in another colour).

u don t see a lot of blacks/ arabs in the serie if u compare with the reality, u don t see poverty either

Anyway having lived in Paris, there are neighbourhoods where you really don't see that many non-white people on the street, like in the northern parts of the 3rd for example (I lived near Réplublique, the difference between me going north towards Gare du Nord and Gare de l'Est or going south was big). Ofcourse people can go where they want, this is the case in almost every country in the world, but racial segregation (not the one where the government forces it, but where it just happens due to economic differences, racism or other reasons) is still very much a thing in Paris and everywhere in Europe, unfortunately. That said I havent really watched the show so I am not sure how it is portrayed in it!

In any case i checked out of curiosity the area sh'es staying at and it's near Place Monge in the 5th so it's not THAT expensive... *Btw Russians/Eastern european aren't "traditionally" considerate white, at least culturally (usually perceived as poor before anything else).

@@MsCarotty I guess we can agree to disagree. The 18th is a nice area! I like the vibe in the 18/19/20th arrondissements in general, very young and creative. I guess we are getting at a mix between pure racism and xenophobia, where often the latter is more prevalent in Europe and pure racism is more prevalent in the US, I guess? But whatever, lets just agree that the show is pure fiction. I started watching because I lived as a foreigner in Paris so I was curious, but omg no I couldnt reach past the 2nd episode.

It's incredible that I, a person who is completely able to dismiss a lot of inaccuracies and exaggerations in shows and movies if I embrace them as feel-good TV, was not even able to make it past episode one. I would have loved this to be a little romanticised, easy to watch show (because we all know we can use the escapism right now) but oh boy this mess is just unwatchable and I think I have seldomly disliked a shows heroin more than Emily. I'm so bummed because I really miss this type of girly tv with great fashion and Paris is my favourite place in the entire world. But oh well, C'est la vie.

This show is incredibly lazy. All those stereotypes and clichés really bugged me. Add to that the writing is so lazy, there’s nothing new or interesting about any of the characters, the story is incredibly predictable. I will not watch the second season.

Lazy is the best way to put it. It’s pretty, but empty and relies on stereotypes to an insane degree.

Well the show was in a way realistic because all these great things probably happen when you are as beautiful as Emily/Lily Collins like everyone falling in love with you, making friends in a heartbeat, becoming an influencer without effort. getting this amazing promotion and job opportunity. But the problem the show makes is trying to portray her as an "everyday" girl that is relatable - and no that did not work. Nothing about Emily is relatable and unfortunately she is also not very likable.

For me, the only way you could really think that the show is somehow “realistic” is by being completely ignorant. I enjoyed the show because I already knew it was going to be silly and exaggerated, but if you’re basing your perspective of France/French people around this, you should probably get help, or perhaps get out of your American bubble. The way Emily lives is super unrealistic, of course, because it is meant to be this bubble gum pinky show with 0 sense, making clear that she earns a lot of money so she doesn’t have to worry about “understanding” the metro (like us common people), speaking the language of the country in which you’re currently working at (not just visiting) nor making meals at home because of course she can go to the coffee shop around the corner. If you wanna laugh a little and forget about your work/studies, it is great for distraction, otherwise you’re gonna suffer watching it HAHAHAHA Ps: sorry if I made no sense, I speak Spanish

I think that's a flaw of the show. Not being realistic is fine in most cases, but when it comes to portraying other cultures you don't want to be on the silly and exaggerated side. Take Lost in Translation, for example. A movie that unrealistically and exaggeratedly portrays Japan and Japanese people to the point of racism. Stereotyping a culture is not fine just because Emily in Paris is doing it to fellow white people. The blatant white-washing of Paris is probably the most problematic part of it.

Súper mal educada, entitled como algunos consideramos el estereotipo de 🇺🇸. Dejan la imagen de los franceses como groseros, de mal genio y casi xenofobos cuando el problema es la actitud de Emily. So disappointed ☹️

I enjoyed the show and I really like Lily Collins, but oh boy! It was so cringy! When Emily sad she is bringing the "american point of view"... Like who would ever say that, really? Most of the time, the show totally felt like it was a different universe. And why was she dressed like a 5 years old toddler?

Honestly it's a bit offensive there's real struggles about going from One country to other to write about, being seeing as to loud or accidentally rude cause the social norm it's completly diferent, the struggles whith pronunciation and daily talks as a beginner , the change of prices in everything from basic food to clothes, the huge difference in dating ideals . This show could have been so interesting from a outside perspective and still be funny but intead it's just entitled Mary Sue in Paris never get fired even if she extremely rude and unprofessional.

Loved your analysis and subscribed! One thing I think I’m interpreting differently then other people watching this show, is that the “rudeness” of he French characters is usually justified? And the show (to me) makes that pretty clear... which is something that I really enjoyed about it. Like I know that a lot of people hate that Emily doesn’t speak French (valid) but it’s also the primary motivator of the frustration of the French people and the conflict of the plot. Like if Madeline actually went there, there would be basically zero conflict. Emily being tone deaf and obnoxious in many ways is an American stereotype that butts against the French stereotypes used. I wish the show had committed to that more, showing more of a change in how Emily interacted with people and how that changes the dynamics of how negative her interactions with French people are. Like you said, we see a few shots of her learning French but the French she uses never improves. I think if they committed to showing her using more conversational French and her interactions with random French people improving (French language and culture is a HUGE influence in why many Americans see French people as rude, bc they come off as rude -not attempting the language, not saying hello before an interaction, etc). I think the premise of the show was pretty clever and they lost it a little when actually making the show, which also results in as you said, zero character growth... :( it was also super weird to me that in the beginning of the show they used a decent amount of French (I think) and then halfway through just decided to have all the French people speak English to each other. Why???? It was so dumb!

Absolutely! Haha and yes Madeline would have been perfect (although the fact that she thought those company guidelines from Chicago would go over well in France made me think twice about her too...). I think they really missed out on that opportunity of Emily growing, learning French, and becoming less ignorant. :/

Her being sent to Paris from her company is the most unrealistic thing in the first place. Also that entire trip to Camille's parents' house was the most cringe worthy. And I don't mind watching eye candy romcom genre, still this was a cringe fest. Yes, I got it, the stereotypes was the part of the storyline. But only negative ones? If she is so in love with the city, what exactly does she love so much? Ah, croissants, something else?

It is not unrealistic to be sent to Europe for work. My best friend was sent to Florence, Italy. And I was given the choice of Paris or Brussels. I chose Brussels due to its location to other things & other reasons. But I spent a lot of time in Paris while I lived overseas.

I did not live in France, but I did live for a while in the Netherlands and girl, even th A LOT of people there do learn and speak english I still tried my damn hardest to learn the language. I failed horribly but I could still communicate somehow. I definitely tried and spoke more the language than Emily lmao. When I went to Paris, I did encounter many people who spoke english or spanish to me, but that might just be my experience? I do speak basic french anyway so again, I tried. Also, the metro system in Paris was AMAZING and my sister and I used it all the time to get everywhere. Coming from a city that only has 5 metro lines I was just blown away by how much of the city was covered. I did get lost in the train in both Netherlands and Italy. Emily, listen to me, you think you got horribly lost?? I got lost by a full city. You try again child, be brave.

@@hellonicolette the funny thing is that I did not get lost once, nor twice, but three times. One of them I was stranded somewhere between Florence and Pisa in what looked like the middle of nowhere 😂 I literally ended up walking to Pisa for like a full hour after waiting for another train for what felt like eons. So probably like half an hour. The other ones were just the train system in the Netherlands fucking with me by changing times and platforms last minute. I was too trusting 😔✌🏼😂

The communism still exists and we drink alcohol all the time. And basically worship Putin. Everyone is super homophobic and thinks all Americans in Russia are clearly spies. Noone questions state propaganda and believes every word. Our ordinary life is on the level of North Korea. Smth like that.

Why did she wear so many berets? That's so cliché. And how are we supposed to like her when she apparently has no moral compass. Not only does she immediately flirt back with every guy that hits on her (except the property manager) - not that that's immoral, but she kissed Gabriel a second time knowing he was with Camille and then slept with him the night they broke up (that's not what friends do). Also she slept with him when she was supposedly already dating Mathieu.

Yessss!! The thing with french people speaking English with each other was so annoying!!! (and of course, it wasn't the only one..). Aaaaand... assuming that the whole office knows of the bosses affair, I **hate** how Emily feels she's allowed to ask her how she feels around her lover's wife..... It's none of your freakin' business! This doesn't make you considerate and kind, it makes you nosy and obnoxious! I mean she doesn't even like you! You're not besties!

Thank you so much! I I'm French and I felt so bad after watching the show, thinking about all the Americans that were going to think that this is how French people are. What a nightmare! So far from reality! We are definitely not perfect but we are not that rude, that obsessed with sex and, thank god, we don't consider it OK to cheat on our wife/husband. I can't list everything but thank you again for this video!

@@hellonicolette NOW THIS IS indeed problematic. As you've pointed out, the show is not-realistic (intentionally, but some ppl don't get it). And I doubt ppl are stupid enough to believe that the show and its stereotypes are real. To be honest the fact that you think "Americans may think this is real" is more of an insult to any nation that whatever was portrayed in the show - what kind of stereotyped thinking is this? Do you now lable a whole nation as naive/stupid to believe the show? 🙈

It’s a show!! It’s normal for it not to be accurate... why focus on the details!! It’s actually an amazing and uplifting show!!

I find it so ironic how Europeans are so insulted when Netflix stereotypes them yet I've been living in Europe for over 2 years now and I've seen first hand how my Latino friends struggle to find one European that doesn't constantly throw stupid stereotype offensive jokes at them based on what they saw on a show on Netflix.....

The truth Is that we latinos have it hard all around the world. Thrid World countries in general actually. All because the stereotypes the people from the USA promote onw their shows. Now, I'm so used to my country and my culture being misrepresented that I don't even bother with a show that does it. We need more empowering representation on mainstream media, a show or movie that meant to latinos what Black Panther, for example, meant to afrodescendants

Although I agree that Emily’s character has no arc and really doesn’t grow/change, and totally agree there should have been more metro, a lot of this show resonates with me and my experience living in Paris for a couple months. There were many people who were outright rude to me and gave me the same side eye seen on this show, and there were many flirtatious men, including one that hit on me while on a date with someone else. I’ve seen criticisms about the cliches in this show, but that’s really what I encountered when I was there. Obviously my experience wasn’t just one note and I experienced a lot of great things too, but I think it’s valid for a first time American visitor to France like Emily to experience cliches bc that’s probably what we are more attuned to. There’s definitely room for improvement as far as character, but if we compare this to SATC, Carrie was pretty easy to hate too, and very unrealistic in many ways, but we could still love the show bc there were aspects that very strongly resonated, whether they seemed like cliches or not.

I’m an immigrant who grew up watching American television and one of the most annoying things is watching how people of ethnic backgrounds are portrayed very poorly and one dimensionally. I cannot blame the French for being so insulted with this show...however, it is an American romance comedy, it isn’t ever to be taken as an educational medium to learn about anything, much less culture. I think it was written to be cheeky trash tv.

I dont really agree with the language thing. I get that it is kind of unpractical in social situations, but the fact that this agency is set up to work with INTERNATIONAL clients and they are not ok with her speaking english is just sus to me. I am neither french or amarican but it is a fact that english is the global language and the generell attitute or speaking level about said language from french people is not better that emilys ability to speak french. I am german and i would never expect someone (from which ever country) to speak german when they travel to germany because we got taught english well in school. I get that there may be problematic things in the show but we should not judge this show like something it is not trying to be. The reason why she is send to paris spontaineously is perfectly fine for a feel good rom-com in my opinion.

Great video!! I shall found it very weird when the French characters were speaking in French with each other even when Emily isn't there like in episode 10 when Antoine and Gabriel speak in English!

Or when the French boss speaks English to that hotel clerk to try to get into that movie stars suite when Emily lost the watch. Like why would she not speak French? It would have been more effective for her to speak French, get access to the room, and they shouldnt even subtitle it. Then it would be ambiguous what she said to persuade him to help. The dialogue isnt even important here so it really wasnt necessary to have that exchange be English

I have seen the season 1, and me and my husband discussed it. We thought it was incredible how much different expensive clothes the main character wore, different clothes almost in each show. We saw the show, because we went to Paris in 2009, and wanted to review the city again. The best vacation in a great city ever. The french people, we met were polite, helped us, I could only speak a little bit french, from the commercial school, we brought our 2 daughters, who were then 5 and 6 years old. We found help if we needed it. We used the Metro, because it was easier to use, than the rental car, we'd hired from the airport. We were in a large yet affordable big apartment. We came late in the evening, we found a supermarket that was open, we weren't afraid of walking in the street at almost midnight, which we do not do in Denmark, because we don't feel safe..Besides from all that, I think your analysis is right and I hope more people will view it and conclude the same, it is unrealistic, and rude to french people. Thank you very much.

I discovered your channel/video by chance and, as a Frenchman, I really appreciated your work on this video. Indeed, about this show, one would assume that somehow it's normal for French to complain about it because we are the target of the clichés and so on and so forth... That somehow, even if the clichés were true and accurate, we couldn't stand them by pride and reject them... SO THANK YOU, the American girl from California to clearly restore some (a lot of) truths ! Really appreciated !! Of course some clichés do exist like in every cultures/countries, but the problem with the show is the clichés are ALWAYS presented in a negative way that does not fit the reality at all !! Not really. Netflix has some good, high quality shows. The Crown, Stranger Things, Daredevil, etc. Yeah there are lots of duds but they’re not necessarily cheap and low level. This is just one of the crappy ones.

I learned the basics and polite etiquette in two weeks before I was going to Paris. I find it extremely rude if someone goes to a new place and just expects everyone to bend over backwards to understand you. It’s wrong.

I'm a French student and my teacher is french and from episode 1 I knew this show was gonna be extremely inaccurate but boy I was not surprised... It's full of clichés and i couldn't even enjoyed it as "fantasy watch" because I couldn't take my mind out of all the inaccuracies. In my opinion this show was very unnecessary 👎🏼

I was shocked when I watched the first episode. They advertised it as "made by the people that did sex and the city" but the quality of the story and characters isn't even slightly close.

Why would the fact that everyone is hitting on her bother you?

I don't even think the issue I have with this movie being "unrealistic". It's that it elevates one group OVER another and clearly demonizes the French and valorizes the protagonist beyond tolerability. One can argue the Amelie is a fantasy with a significantly more fantastical elements than this film but the problem with movies like Emily in Paris is that they push the notion that they are making some kind of statement about the real world. If you're going for absurd , just go ALL the way in.

To be honest, i have enjoyed the series, and i am aware that emily's life is unreal, it is effective because of the escapism and fantasy that you can face a world so different and live in it like a fairytale, thats how the series goes. But i also loved how you reviewed it and the claim you said that it is indeed unrealistic portrayal of French culture. There is some truth to the rudeness of some people in Paris, but in lal big cities where there is less time for self and more work than average, it is common.

@@LiLChiLi_ Naturally I can have my opinion. There is intelligent comedy and not so intelligent comedy and this clearly belongs to the latter category. It will be gone and forgotten in a few years.

I can’t help but feel that Sabrina gave a more realistic depiction of the expat or exchange experience (everything is bewildering at first, and you are mortifyingly wrong on many occasions, but gradually you acclimatize and find your feet and grow as a person and are better for the experience) and that was only a 10-15 minute passage within the movie!

You are right Emily is really rude. She doesn’t say hello to anyone. That’s not normal.
