Everything Wrong With Brightburn In Evil Superman Minutes

Фильм және анимация

Brightburn. This movie had such a cool premise, and I picked it as my sleeper hit of the summer, but... sadly... the premise is the best thing about the movie, and the movie itself is full of issues and sins. We didn't count the issues, but we counted the sins.
Next week: recent horror and recent super.
Remember, no movie is without sin! Which movie's sins should we expose next?!

We were promised a tween Superman movie where his life wasn't ideal and he ended up turning bad. We got a movie about an alien parasite demon thing that does stuff for reasons.

Agreed. I actually walked out of the movie theatre. Not out of fear, but boredom and wasted potential. Instead of treating horror like a lightswitch flicked on every second or third scene, it should've been like a dimmer and only used at around the half-way point once we actually like this kid. Then they could have fixed the truly awful story-telling (My biggest peeve was the scene where he was at school and mentions 'maggots' once, and the fat kid mocks Brandon in a ham-fisted way to tell us that this isn't the first time). The ONLY thing I liked was the arcade machines flickering when he get angry and slammed his fist.

In all honesty I think she went about that wrong! She literally got close enough to take his sack mask off and hug him showing that she had a little bit of his trust. Her mistake was trying to stab him right there and then, If it was me I'd wait. I already have his trust enough to scheme and plan when to kill him. I'd roll with it long enough to gain his full trust rent an apartment and wait for him to go to sleep! I'd have dry towels and newspapers on the floor for What's about to come next. Soon as the little bastard is asleep, I'd quickly slit his throat and then push him to the floor where the dry towels and newspapers are to not get blood on the bed or floor. And continue to stab him in the neck chest gut and go even further and decapitate the little bitch, to make sure he's dead. And take his body and drive till I find a lake or ocean and tie a heavy weight to his legs and let him sink. Then go back clean up the mess and pretend that I let him go outside and he was missing, and I know cops and other's will look for him but they will eventually give up the search Leaving me to try and move on in life but that's just me she planed wrong and it cost her life Thx for all the likes I know 10 likes might not seem like a lot to others who literally got past 200 or 500 but it's a lot for me I've never got past 3 so again thx and have an amazing day

I am honestly stunned over how boring this movie was given the premise. Brandon could have grown up a bullied kid being taught good virtues, but the power that came with adolescence would have pushed him down a darker path. Give me a scene where the terrifying preteen sincerely asks his parents why he should have to be good and cowtow to his tormentors when he is so much better than them. Show me that journey from innocent youth to prospective alien conqueror. A villain that has a point and motivation is so much more unnerving than your next jump scare monster. Nope. Brandon is just a sociopath with no concept of good and evil because that's easier.

hell, i reckon that homelander in The Boys TV series is a better take on it, just because it is at least made obvious why. Here we have superman is bad because of... alien mind programming? there they make it obvious that supermans upbringing is what made him good (which is also pointed out by 'superman: red son' within the official material- he became superman because he was brought up by nice people in the very american midwest). Any movie using the premise of superman 'but what if not good' should just take ideas from how different upbringings might change him, and go with that. What would happen if he'd landed in california, and grown up in the fame focussed backyard of hollywood? what would happen if he landed in the middle of a desert and had to raise himself (i mean, he uses sunlight for energy and can breath in space, so it's not like starvation would be an issue, right?)

I feel like they didn't even realise the premise they had. Their only idea was Evil Superman, and they either threw in the kid thing to make it more creepy, or intended this as the origin story prequel to their Dark Superheroes Movie Universe. The idea of what a hormonal, troubled pre-teen could potentially do with superpowers didn't occur to them at all, even though it occurred to literally everyone who saw the trailer.

The main problem with this movie lies in the usual problem with Superman, in that he's obviously overpowered when it comes to dealing with humans. In the comic books, when you've got good Supes fighting villains, they'll all have their own powers or schemes or magic doohickeys to at least create a slight challenge. Plus, Clark's own morals will often prevent him taking bad guys out as easily as he obviously could. So, when you take all that away, what you're left with is a all-powerful, utterly unstoppable being (pseudo-kryptonite notwithstanding), who has zero ethical issues with just killing whoever he feels like. And that's the movie. Normally, the thrill of a typical slasher movie with your standard bad guy (Vorheese, Myers, Ghostface, Freddy, etc) is that there exists the possibility that once a character in any of those movies has been targeted, that character could still escape. Sure, it's not very likely at all, and 99 times out of 100, that doesn't happen. But it's in the belief that it MIGHT happen where the tension and excitement come from. And with Brightburn, you don't get that. At all. Basically, if the kid wants you dead, you're gonna be dead. So all the supposedly creepy build every time a character is at risk is rendered utterly moot, cos it's like "Well, OK, so they're dead". And then you're just sitting there waiting for it to happen until we move on to the next victim.

To be fair, (contrary to what often is shown in comic books) giving a random child or teenager superpowers (especially the powers of Superman) is pretty much just asking for trouble. Hell, there are grown-ass adults who would lose themselves to the God complex it would undoubtedly give them.
