Everything Wrong With Apple's Dongles | Untangled

Ғылым және технология

Apple has removed the headphone jack from the iPhone and their MacBook laptops are USB-C only. You can't even plug your iPhone into your MacBook without an adapter. Apple makes over 20 different types of dongles. You need an adapter or a dongle to connect to things like HDMI, ethernet, or wired headphones. Apple getting rid of the headphone jack and other ports has caused a lot of fragmentation.

@@user-vk9sz2se5j(This comment is long, but please I beg you read it all, I took over an hour to write it as my answer. It won't take more than 15 minutes of your life to read it) Are you sure? Look around you. Most of what you buy nowadays is meant to solve a problem that didn't exist before that item was a thing. A very classic example would be the computer itself. As useful and entetaining electronic tech is now, computers were first build to store a large amount of data for companies, as well as to do large amounts of calculations in a short period of time. That way, the companies would be able to know their profit in no time. However, before big transnational companies even existed, there was no need to do insane amount of calculations in a short period of time. Now, having a PC or a mobile device with acess to the internet is almost essential nowadays for almost any job you want to work on. And still, the processing power required for executing new tasks on computers keep increasing each time they release a new model. You'll end up, sooner or later, having to buy a new PC if you want to keep using one for the tasks you'll need to do in the future. If, for example, you want to entertain yourself with the newest AAA games, you''d better save money in order to buy a PC with good specs every few years or so, as the games constantly become more and more graphically demanding (which does not necessarely equal to becoming better or more entertaining, at least in my opinion, as such realism becomes redundant to the gameplay exprience, and sometimes it even diminishes the "fantasy" aspect of a game, which I like to have), or else you'll suffer from framerate or even graphical issues, if you are even able to play the game at all. But do the games need to keep taking more and more processing power to such an extent? As I've just said, I don't think so. It's a need that didn't exist, but ends up being created so you'll need to spend money to solve it. Nothing of that existed before, none of those games, none of the computers. But people, at the time, didn't request for them. In short, computer development originated as a "business solution" and have since basically become a "solution and/or an alternative for multiple problems in our lives" even though they would have little to no use in business in the XVII century, for example. Another example along the lines of tech would be mobile games. Their entire profit comes from them being extremely unfair for a non-paying player by spamming ads to enrage them and making the difficulty curve extremely obnoxious to the average player, so they can't progress unless they do an extremely difficult or tiring task. Tired of losing and having to grind for hours to even stand a chance? Just pay for an item that boosts your stats! Oh, in extremely greedy games, it even comes to the point where they take advantage of the growth in the amount of people suffering from mental health problems and anxiety that has been happenning nowadays (something that, I may say, was *also* caused on pupose by the big corporations) and builds the structure of a game in a way the player has a limited amount of tries, and whenever the player reaches that limit, they need to wait an excessively long time period until they are able to play again. If they can't wait, they have *paying* as their only solution. Now, before you start cursing me or saying I'm wrong again, I want you to know is that I'm not defending Apple, nor am I blaming techonology for existing or acting like a boomer by saying the world was objectively better the way it was before (I'm a millenial, by the way; I was born in 2002); it just doesn't work that way. The quality of life has improved for many people in many aspects, despite being worsened in many others. I actually think that technology, by itself, is *good;* it helps our lives in ways it wasn't possible before. Yes, many of the problems we have nowadays that can be solved by technology were artificially created, but many others were always there, persisting with no solution for centuries or even milleniums until technology helped us solve them. Examples are terrible diseases that inflicted thousands or even millions of people in the past centuries but are now thankfully controlled thanks to scientic research; or minorities that were always excluded from social groups in many places due to cultural taboos (example: gay people, or people with degenerative diseases) now being able to find places where they can find other people like them and fight for their rights, thanks to the invention of the internet. The internet also created a new type of culture that is completely different from what we've had since then, and diversity is always good. We can now have acess to many different kinds of information and cultures, which opens an infinite amount of possibilities for us; using all the info we have, we create new things, we can, for example, mix and match different intelectual creations in order to originate parodies and musical mashups; this all creates a close connection to cultures that were once completely isolated. We can learn new languages and talk to people from different countries on the world (which is what I'm doing right now - I am not native to english, not sure if you are; I am typing from Brazil, you are probably from another country) This is all a new and fun type on entertainment, and I'm glad it was invented. What I wanted to say is that despite all the advanges that we got with the new things that were introduced to us by the industry, it all happened in a forceful, somewhat delusional way. Technology has great potential and will always be phenomenal by itself, but its development unfortunaly comes because the companies want more money, want to convince you you'll need more than what you already have, and not because they want us to improve as life beings. If everyone was really united and cooperated for the best, we would have technology much more advanced than what we have now, but also much more fair, with less gimmicks and more focus towards what we really like and/or need to have, as well as acessible for everyone. But hey, for that, we would need to change everyone's minds, and that's the utopia...

Got my 6S as a graduation present in 2016. Was offered a $200 iPhone 8. Was offered a free upgrade from my parents to an iPhone X. Was offered an iPhone 7 for $50. Recently noted the new iPhone SE 2 is $400. Stuck to my iPhone 6S because I’m sure the iPhone 7 and up would’ve left me in an endless train of incomplete feelings of my phone. Apple lost at least a thousand dollars they could’ve had from me if they were to keep the damn headphone port. That was the most stupid decisions I’ve ever seen Apple make. Stupid than the $700 wheels in my opinion. I’m finally going to upgrade when the iPhone 12 comes out but only doing it for the other features and even though I have airpods, I’m gonna feel like I’m missing something.

Personally Apple’s push to make everyone get AirPods is something I do think made the iPhone simpler. Fumbling for my old corded earphones always made using my phone (or any handheld device) much slower; it was always a good 10-20 seconds before I was really back to what I was doing on the phone, while putting in my EarPods takes 3 seconds or less. And each extra second it takes to make a smartphone do what you want it to do is much more grueling than that of getting back on-task on a laptop. I also appreciate Bluetooth earphones/headphones because I will never break them, unlike the dozens upon dozens of older earphones/headphones I’ve ruined by snagging on practically everything

Exactly! We are not in full usb c world yet, but we have to get there someday, so what better way than adding usb c to every device (usb c iphone coming soon). I personally think that in the new macs there are more useful ports than in the old one. I never used minidisplayport and rarely sd card slot. Now after the switch I can connect the same cable into my ipad, monitor, cameras, android phone and I can use the same charger with every device so I when traveling I don’t need my cable backpack which contained all the different cables I may need for certain device. This wouldn’t be possible without usb c, but it is really worth all the hassle and costs.

They want to draw attention away from legacy printers, stereos, and other usb a type devices to encorage (force) users to repurchase supported wireless wifi, bluetooth, and cloud based appliances. This is all to tighten their grasp on their own ecosystem while third parties innovate with wireless technologies alongside supporting legacy devices.

Well, it probably is the dongle if you got a third party one like he stated in the vid, if not, maybe defective... another theory being the headphones, if it has a microphone with a controller on it, it could be activating Siri with that. My old earbuds had a little controller on it, and if you held down pause/play, it’d activate Siri, but it got busted, so if I moved it wrong it would activate her

Here's solutions from the internet: (1) Try restarting your phone, (2) try using other headphones, (3) Turn off both Siri and Voice control in settings, or (4) Update to IOS 12. If these doesn't work, then it's the lightning adaptor. I had the same problem. Siri & voice control will be activated and musics will plays/pauses/skips randomly every time I plug in headphones (tried with several headphones) with the lightning adaptor (which is from Apple). Fixed by using the EarPods with lightning connector.

It just goes to show how dumb people are, when the company that makes devices unnecessarily thin, thus generating problems, is the world's first trillion dollar company. MacBook Pros from 2016 onward have flexible screen cables instead of the traditional wires, thus they break when you open the lid too much. Repairing that little $5 wire will cost you $600 instead, because the screen is built in such a way it needs to be replaced completely just to ffix one spot. Mind boggling how the stupid people that buy these products have the nerve to hide behind the "money" and "status" fallacies to downplay us detractors. Yeah no shit I can't afford a $5000 laptop, but that's beside the point. You don't need to be poor to realize Apple is one big money grab.
