Everything the Media is Getting Wrong About the College Protests

Ойын-сауық

Until a month ago, college students in America were dweeby snowflake liberals, too socially anxious to notify the waiter of an incorrect order. Now, they’re allegedly well-connected, well-funded terrorists. Who are the students protesting for Palestine, what do they want, and why is the media obsessed with misrepresenting them?

Criticizing Israel, the nation-state, is not Antisemetic. Equating all Jewish people with Israel sure is though! It flattens an entire group of people with their own individual thoughts and feelings into a lockstep monolith. It dehumanizes all Jewish people.

@@user-mk4kz1lp4jnah actually the rates of sex and relationship are a major sign of mental and physical health. So Im not gonna watch to the creepy uncle guy, and I believe you some, but we do know that sexual health is one of the best ways to measure health of people. Low or even medium sexual desire is 99.99% of the time related to mental health and physical health. If you really think about it, the desire to have sex is the most selected for trait in humans. It also is the least likely to show up as mutation or a recessive trait because of how it’s essentially the most selected for trait. Therefore, young people 18-30 not having lots of sex is not only unhealthy relationships/sexual experience, it’s also basically a guarantee that the person has a pretty serious mental/physical health issue. The only exception is those that are extremely horny but they follow religious, spiritual (saving sex for marriage or special people) or health related pressure. Even the spiritual factor is still a sign of at least a failure of having a relationship, as a normal person would seek and find a healthy partner to be with for sex. Sure in that case that person may not have problems but everyone else does. But anyways lower sex drives and sexual activity are one of the best ways to determine health, and it is one of the absolute last things to go wrong. The other truth is that very very few people could have a congenital or genetic cause or asexuality. Because it’s an absolute selected for trait, as you can’t have kids without sex, even the most recessive traits will be weeded out over time.

Or okay as long as it's poorish, brownish people waaaay over there, where we don't have to hear and see their suffering, and they have some land our friends really want?" White phosphorus burning children's flesh to the bone, healthcare workers buried alive, journalists targeted and murdered, infrastructure obliterated, deliberate famine ... and okay, the world did blink for a minnit when WCK aid workers were "accidentally" slaughtered because those victims felt like real people or something, I guess. I’m a student at the university of Michigan; I actually know the student featured in the thumbnail. I just want to say that all this talk about college students not knowing what we’re getting ourselves into or not knowing about the issue is projection, in my experience. I got involved in pro-Palestine activism for a pretty dramatic reason (I was friends with Aaron Bushnell), and I feel ashamed that I didn’t before-and I didn’t before precisely because I was uneducated on the topic and felt uncomfortable with it. So now that I’m involved, and a whole lot more educated on the topic, I ask everyone I meet, “What got you involved in this activism?” Many friends are Muslim and grew up hearing about the plight of the Palestinians and caring about them, but this is the first time they’ve gotten involved in any organizing. Many are Jewish leftists and got involved after October, out of a frustration with people continually trying to speak for them. Most white non-Jews I meet are deeply involved in labor organizing or leftist student groups, and this is a natural continuation of their intersectional activism. I have personally not met a single person who is involved in this just because it’s fun or that’s what everyone else is doing. (Probably because it’s not fun, it’s pretty depressing, and it’s not what everyone else is doing by a long shot.)

i'm a recent graduate of dartmouth college and prof. orleck is a treasure who is loved by so many of her students! Our campus protest was also very peaceful, just 5 tents on the green, in a small town in the middle of the woods. But our campus admin called in the state police with swat teams, tear gas, batons, and rubber bullets to violently arrest more than 90 protestors for just standing on the green. I watched many of my friends, most of whom are queer, PoC, and low-income, get mass arrested when they were literally just standing or sitting on grass (as you put it). The president's justification? She wanted to avoid the "violence" and "chaos" seen at other universities. Students and faculty are holding a vote of no confidence now because of it- and I hope she loses. Also, I wanted to point out further hypocrisy in the media response to Hind's Hall- Hamilton Hall has been occupied by Columbia students protesting for civil rights and against the vietnam war in 1968. In 1985, students occupied the building for THREE WEEKS to protest for divestment from apartheid in south africa. These are events that Columbia posts on their website and advertises to students as part of their "culture of campus activism." Don Lemon saying that this is reminiscent of jan 6th instead of the civil rights movement is obfuscating the fact that THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT OCCUPIED THIS SAME EXACT BUILDING 50 YEARS AGO

I'm a Columbia student (a sophomore at CC), and as such I'm so glad that you've decided to make this video and correct the record. I have relatives and neighbors from my hometown spouting bizarre misinformation based on what they've seen on these enormous and reputable news networks. In particular, there has been this pervasive narrative that the occupation of Hind's Hall (Hamilton Hall) was entirely engineered and enacted by "outside agitators." Yes, it is true that there were a few people who were non-affiliates who were participating in the encampment. However, not only were they definitely in the minority, but they also were not the main organizers. It's worth noting that the Columbia campus has been closed to non-affiliates for weeks, and it would have been extremely difficult for the masses of outsiders that multiple media outlets have claimed were present to be so. The occupation was the work of determined students, and it was students who were brutalized by the police.

A couple of points (as a history major): 1. Jonathan Greenblatt should keep his mouth shut on gay rights if he wants to be so ignorant of how frequent queer people were outed by the local papers (people would literally exit the bars and have to cover their face in front of cameras). 2. People act like the civil rights movement was all people holding hands and singing. But there's a well documented history of radical college students occupying colleges. A particularly interesting example is when Samuel L Jackson got expelled after he locked a bunch of board members in a Morehouse College room including MLK's father.

I've been to one of the encampments and the peace and community there was so amazing. The only issue was pigs trying to come bother us every once in a while. People were playing soccer, rollerblading, making art together. There was free food, water, coffee and tea. For anyone who wanted or needed it in the encampment, visitor or not. People were dancing, children were rocked to sleep under the stars before being put safely to bed. Nothing about it is violent.

That's why they're so goddamn afraid of it. the community and the resources are free and then they tear it all apart before anyone realizes communities can exist like this where people look after each other and pigs have no reason to be there. When we have tax free communities they lose their funding and they can't step on us.

At 22:58 you pose the question of how students *should* be protesting. The truth is conservative pundits do NOT want people protesting unless it backs their own pet causes. People like Ted Cruz, Olivia Reingold, and Philippe Lemoine want blind and docile obedience. They do not want young people, or old people for that matter, to buck the status quo. It's antithetical to conservatism to interrogate and deviate from the status quo. This is likely the fundamental issue with LGBTQ+ people and trans people in particular.

Absolutely. I remember ages ago....Sean Hannity specifically decried the fact pro-gay legislation was being "forced" upon people like himself. His suggestion? Change the culture first....rather than the laws. Boycott, protest, etc. That was acceptable to him. And when people did precisely that? No surprise....he flipped the script and condemned such forms of protest and cultural shifts as the inherent problem. Your diagnoses is right. It's not about the "correct" way to make our voices heard....it's the fact we have voices at all. Or even the fact we _exist_ at all. That is the real problem.

As a "near boomer" ( older end of Gen X) I think too many have forgotten history. For example, I recently had to cut ties with an "elder millenial" because, on Holocaust Remembrance day, they were calling me antisemitic, because I would not agree to their classification of BDS as antisemitic. Not a "self hating Jew", antisemitic. My Dad is a holocaust survivor. Now, how did they come to this? Given they have been spouting Kahanist crap for months, without knowing it was straight from Meir Kahane, I attribute it to the burying of history. Those, like me, who were there, recognize how much of the "pro-Israel" stuff is coming from Kahane and the JDL, but younger? I bet many have no idea.

I'm ashamed of that now because I DON'T think a lot of the pro-palestine take on history is correct and I think there are some REAL problems with the way 'zionism' is described. You don't think so?

It's a little bit weirder than that. The word antisemitism invented by a man who hated Jews, specifically to refer to opposition to Jews. So, historically, that term has only been used as a synonym for judenhass, as that was what it was invented for. The history of that term is separate from the use of the term semitic to refer to Semitic languages and Semitic peoples as a whole. Palestinians are absolutely semitic, but antisemitism is a weird word with a weird history. I think it would make more sense to just stop using the term rather than to start applying it to everyone who comes from a Semitic culture. It's a word that was invented specifically to sanitize and scientifically legitimize a type of bigotry. I get what you're saying, but I just wanted to share.

It went like this in chronological order: 1) Before Oct 7: Protests about the West Bank occupation (complex issue not know by many) 2) Oct 7 terrorist attack: Put a light on the whole Palestine-Israel issue for newer generations. 3) REALLY weird statements from several progressive/leftists intellectuals validating the attack by Hamas. 4) Division within the progressive movements around Europe and North America due to the mixture of genuine pledges for the liberation of Palestine AND clearly anti semitic dog whistles. 5) The last issue has lasted until now, hence the good faith protests encountered on universities campuses (and other places) are encountered with mixed reactions. 6) Now/Current day: We are in a genuine lack of control from Israel on their combat against the Hamas organization which results in HEAVY civilian casualties. But because of the quite clear antisemitic messages that arise on the Oct7 massacre you have a lot of progressives watching this issue with caution. Hence the lack of full support by general public. A recommendation from a progressive latin american: Just remove you ego and start the video/discussion/protests about this issue by condemning ALL types of antisemitism. Then, you can continue and your audience will hear your arguments with a good faith. And lastly, as a Mexican born gay progressive man, I want to be all the way with you BUT this still just seems very hypocritical for many. No protests about the hundreds of thousands of deads that the US (government and citizens) has helped to cause by empowering the cartel drug trade. Countries which are more closer to yours and with way more violent examples of human right abuses are nowhere in this protests. In summary, this issue will still be niche until other issues around the world are also represented on this protests.
