    Let me add to the litany of people raving and recommending Steinbeck: Of Mice and Men is another wonderful yet heart wrenching short story. East of Eden and The Grapes of Wrath are his two longest works, and both are well worth the read.

    Your videos have been a beautiful break always, but especially for me the last several weeks. I admit I have been suuuuuucked into the nexus of the Johnny Depp trial. Every single day, every minute. It's been so interesting, wild and hits home in a way I can't explain. You've sprinkled something wholesome and grounding and beautiful throughout weeks of triggering, eye opening and (IMO) needed testimony. Mental illness, abuse, addiction snakes through our lives like a beautiful vine that poisons you while you're mistakenly feeling nourished as it engulfs your entire life. It's made me so sad for both sides, wishing healing for everyone involved. Your videos have brought this calm of "oh yes, this is my life now, this is how I'm here now". Emma, you're a dear sweet soul. Thank you for spilling it out all over the interwebs. We need it. ❤️

    I'd 100% recommend Steinbeck's "Of Mice and Men". It was my first Steinbeck & wow! His writes brilliantly & was an instant 5 🌟 for me. It's also a short book but he definitely used the pages wisely. I'm busy reading his non-fiction on the WWII (he worked as an reporter) and just his introduction is already wonderful. But "The Pearl" is on my TBR! I'm looking forward to read it!

    Hey, Emma! Hope you're doing well. I read Kafka On The Shore (it took me a whole month since I'm not used to reading long books), 1984, and Heaven. Kafka On The Shore was my first Murakami novel. It was definitely... interesting to say the least. It took some explanation videos to understand what was going on, but I liked that everything sort of intertwined and connected in the story. It was my first magical realism book. My favourite though was 1984! It was my first dystopian novel, and I was just so horrified and enthralled by the world George Orwell masterfully crafted. Also, the parts featuring torture and brainwashing in the book was just gruesome and appalling, and so bone-chilling. The concept of Room 101 was also pretty scary. Heaven was also a really interesting book which mainly focuses on two children who get brutally bullied in school, and my gosh, some parts of it was really hard to read, since you just wanted the best for these two characters. I'm so glad to hear that you enjoyed this reading month! The next book I'm going to read is Crime And Punishment.

  • @Camston
    @Camston2 жыл бұрын

    Hey Emma! I also read 15 books this month! Including Heaven by Mieko Kawakami, which was my best read of the month, as expected. I haven’t noticed if you’ve read Kawakami yet but you NEED to read Breasts and Eggs first. It is my favourite book of all time. Kawakami is a Japanese author and all her books are translated fiction. Breasts and Eggs is sorta of a insight on womanhood in Japan, absolutely stunning prose. Both Breasts and Eggs and Heaven were nominated for international Booker Prize!

    I'm SO happy that Emmie loved Heartstopper aaah as someone who's also not much of a fan of fluffy books either. I do read lots of YA Contemporary books but they're not based on love per se but Hearstopper just.. ugh it's not just ALL about love, it tackles everything in between and that just tops it all for me ❤️ Please please please watch the Netflix series! If you thought the novel couldn't get any better, it definitely could uwu Compared to April, May was a GREAT reading month for me too!! I loved almost all of the books I read (6 so far!). Tackled a new book genre and I can't be happier (Sea of Tranquility by Emily St. John Mendel, PLEASE read it!!). Finally read the second book of the Finlay onovan series. Not as good as the first but it's still okay and I enjoyed reading it~ About to finish the Pearl (it's quite short) so yay I'm so happy!

I also read "Freedom: the story of my second life" by Malika Oufkir, in Arabic. Enjoyed it quite a lot actually! And "The lucky one" by Nickolas Sparks, it was really good, i enjoyed the writing, the story, and loved the characters so much.. And then finally i read "Season of migration to the north" also in Arabic.. and i have lots of weird thoughts and feelings about it .. still can't make my mind and say if i like it or not . Really need to re-read it someday.. and that's it

    I actually never came across super negative things about Steinbeck so I was surprised to hear you did! Of Mice of Men is a classic in American high schools, I don't remember it much but his books East of Eden and Grapes of Wrath are one of my favorite books of all time. Being born and raised in California, I love how much of his writing is steeped in the descriptions of landscape and nature of our beautiful land. I just read Cannery Row, which is a shorter novel that I would highly suggest you read next, it's so much fun

    I remember reading Of Mice and Men in high school and really liking it. I'd like to read more Steinbeck and have added him to a list of books I'm trying to get through. The problem with that list is I add about 20 books for every book I complete.

    @@DesolateAura same here. I usually call my list "books I want to read before I..." and then add some random method of dying after that. Like, books I want to read before I am eaten alive by a herd of house hippos.

    My favorite book I read this month was One Last Stop by Casey McQuiston! It was the first book I read this month and it kinda went downhill from there, but I did really like that one.

    I've read 4 books until now, but I if I finish the one I'm currently reading, it'll be 5 books in May for me. The one I'm currently reading is The Woman in the Dunes by Kobo Abe, a surreal story of a teacher who visits a fishing village in the dunes and is tricked to live with a woman in a house at the bottom of a sand pit. Villagers expect him to help the woman, who lives alone, shovel back the sand that constantly slides back to the pit. A surreal, horrifying story and I love it.

    And now you must read "Radio Silence" by Alice Oseman; Kat aka paperbackdreams will love you for it. My favorite poem in "Poems to Night" is the one on page 79 (Irschenhausen, September 1914) and begins with "At night I wish to converse with the angel,".
