Why do you hate playoffs? The thing I hate about a lot of European Leagues (especially La Liga) is that the same few clubs usually win the championship and there is no way for a upset. The playoffs should make the MLS unique from other leagues

banjo playing bison you're right. It does give other teams a chance to win the league and makes the MLS stand out. I do like that part of it. But I guess I just don't like that half of each conference plays in it. I'd like it to be less teams from each conference.

Mohamed Sesay Exactly! Just one of many reasons it won't work. What people don't understand is that just like any other league in the US and Canada, it's a business. Not only are markets, revenue, and profitability all major factors, if pro/reg ever did exist between the USL and the MLS, lack of a proper business model toppled with inconsistency can and will hurt the growth of the game and even put the league in financial danger. Stadium size and location would be an issue as well. The league requires at least an 18,000 seat (elaborate) downtown stadium that's easy to get to. Another reason is that it stifles talent. Promotion and Relegation doesn't create better talent. Players make it to MLS to showcase their phenomenal athletic abilities because they were good enough to get there. Now this might work in lower, less profitable leagues, but again, the world of major professional sports in America is a business. You're not just going to a hockey game or a football game or a soccer "match". You're not just supporting a team or club. You're putting your money into a 250 million dollar investment to pay the players, referees, owners, organization, the guy selling cotton candy in the fifteenth row, and the league itself. I hope my explanation was sufficient. I'm not totally bagging on promotion and relegation because it has some perks, but it will NEVER work in the MLS.

As an American, The MLS should be a Promotion and Relegation League. Some of us American Football fans choose to follow English Football more than the MLS. I do support my local team Philadelphia Union. The MLS atmosphere is okay but it’s not like Old Trafford or Celtic Park.

Mind u MLS is a fairly a young league. Only introduced in 1996. This league will rise and some changes and will get better.

One thing that goes along with your last point is that the salary cap NEEDS to be raised in order to get better players. The season the Super League can afford players like Tevez and Witsel is because they have no salary cap but that has led to huge financial instability in that league

AmahMasBoy yeah they control the money. this is why i hate usa sports. no freedom of buying as many foriegn players you want with your money. they decide your money and your choosing. i hate it. i will like soccer if they change .

MLS is an 'artificial football league',because doesn't have promotion/relegation system.

Love all of your hates for MLS same for me. My only additional hate of MLS is we need more American players to come through and not get pushed out by non-american/foreign players. I liked the homegrown emphasis. We have an academy system but the heart of the issue is how many of those players graduate to the first team sheets. Not many due to the foreign signings. Plus the whole pay to play model is a huge beef for me because there are good poor financial players that could make it too. Scouting needs to be much better. Also, let all the teams get a kit sponsor like any other League to make more money and make more competition for who gets what brand. So that's my beef with MLS.

You know how much it would suck playing in the winter some places here? Places in Canada and Colorado would be snowed out. The season would have some many issues. MLS cup 2016 was freezing with almost frozen ground, and that was the beginning of winter. Weather has a big effect on our season.

Sacramento republic deserves an mls spot out of all the teams who places a bid. There's a reason why they're the front runners. They have the money for the stadium, they already have a great team, and they definitely have the fan base. (I don't support them just throwing facts out there)

I agree we definitely need to use the USL FOR RELEGATIONS/Promotion

We need an transfer and salary cap here in Europe just like in the USA. And the USA needs an promotion/relegation deal , begin with 1 team for prom/rel. and give the relegated team a financial compensation like they do in England.

Another reason the MLS schedule is this way is in America and Canada if they ran through the winter months too many games would have to be postponed and cancelled due to weather condotions they do not have in Europe.

With no relegation/promotion, weaker teams will always suck because there's absolutely no incentive for them to get better, since there are absolutely no consequences for finishing dead last in the league, that is why weaker and lower ranked teams in MLS will stay forever weak and just not give a sh*t if they finish last.

And I agree about the conferences they could change that in the future and just go by a table.

So if you have a season like the premier league, isn't there in issue from Dec through Feb with very cold temperatures for all Canadian teams (and Minnesota) and the chance of significant snowfall (multiple feet of snow)

California produces more soccer players than other states that play professionally. Expansion in CA is not the problem its the system without pro/rel

The schedule is nice because then they do not have to compete with the European leagues and and the draft is to bring in college players and they can sign or not sign anyone

east and west make sense for the us. I think when teams get religated it should be 2 from each conference and east and west in the lower league would be separate leagues from each other

The reason the season runs from spring to fall is because winter in some parts of the US/Canada is brutal as fuck. Try playing in -20C weather in Montreal and tell me how it went.

Football is a wintersport, why can they do it in Russia? It is cold for both teams, long sleevs, gloves and run!!! The crowd can drink and jump lightly, if they want. Cold is no issue!!

I do agree with u on the schedule. But the MLS are competing with NFL and NBA schedules during the fall. So starting at the end of NFL season is the smartest way to go. They just can't compete with them yet, if they do that they will have to input relegation to make some drama start to stay relevant.

MLS isn't really competing with either. the NBA is irrelevant to the MLS because the NBA plays games throughout the week. MLS has one game per week mostly and that's on the weekend. That's cool. The NFL plays on Sunday. The MLS does not have to play on that day. They can play on Saturday.

Almost all teams play in the western area of the country.

I don't think MLS will have pro/rel for a while. the other divisions have to grow first. Also, MLS teams should not have a secondary team compete in the second division. If you continue this, than pro/rel will never happen. Also, I agree about the scheduling. I don't think the NFL is the problem. It's college football. MLS can play games on Friday night and Saturday. But college football is way to popular for MLS to put a dent in it. Don't like the draft and conference thing either for the game.

Immediate response to your early pro/rel mention. First. In a pro/rel situation, how many teams do you see MLS having at the top flight? Think for a second about how many major media markets there are (a lot more than England or Germany or Spain all on their own, or even taken together). Now think about what double round robin scheduling does to your season, and how many teams can you really have at the top flight. It ain't 30. It's not even north of 25. MLS is looking to expand to 28 in the medium term and probably 32 or more afterward, but pro/rel most likely limits you to 20 teams. 5 would be in Cali, and they would stay up with regularity, while massive chunks of the country would be either completely or occasionally unrepresented at the top flight. With pro/rel in This country (two countries actually, don't forget Canada, and what if all three Canadian teams get relegated at some point?) you will never, Never, NEVER fill in all those gaps. There will Always be a good dozen or more major media markets that are left out, and that's just bad for business. North America Needs more than 20 in its top flight. We need it, and we will have it, and everyone will like That. California will still probably wind up with 5 teams, but that will be in a league of 32 or more participants, not just 20.

The reason why conferences exist is simple; they are there to reflect the fact that teams play more games against other teams on the same side of the country, to cut down on travelling time and costs. For a league in a small Europe country, travel isn't a big deal, but in the US/Canada, it definitely is. I will say, I'm a Canadian and watch mostly hockey, so I really don't understand why you say you hate playoffs? What's not to like about more intense atmosphere and higher stake games? Playoff success is what separates the boys from the men, in my opinion. And for the salary cap, I actually like that too. Why? Because it removes the ridiculous $$$ advantage some teams have simply being in a bigger market than other teams. It forces equal opportunity for all teams to put together a competitive roster. It forces managers of all teams to be creative and build the best roster they can under the same restrictions. Without a cap, the rich teams will always be at the top of the standings while the smaller market teams will always be stuck at the bottom, and I find that predictability extremely boring. Another thing; you mentioned it would be great to be able to sign top players from other countries like TO did with Giovinco. Unfortunately those signings are practically impossible for the reasons you mentioned, such as the current competition level in the league and how the league might be perceived by players outside of North America. I think the only way to change that is to keep growing the game in the US/Canada, and keep producing more high talent players right here in our own countries, which should improve the world's perception of US/Canada soccer. Of course this won't happen over the course of a single year! But I think the MLS is headed in the right direction by continuing its expansion!

I do have one suggestion that I very much wish MLS would implement. There's a relatively new thing with the Young DP. And I like that, MLS clubs should have financial incentive to take risks on young players (what is it, 23 and under?) that could be global superstars, but of course it's not guaranteed. Less of their DP salary counts against the cap, and this helps offset the risk of signing expensive unproven talent. What I want though, is this. Three regular DP slots per team, plus one separate category for Young DP. It gives clubs an opportunity to have a fourth DP, and they can chase that down on its own merits instead of deciding between and older guy and a real young guy. In other words, the young DP wouldn't be taking the spot of a potential regular DP. There's no longer any opportunity cost. Plus, I just really want there to be a possibility of one team, out of all these teams, that has four really legit DPs along with all the other things that can be done well. If the Young DP is a category unto itself, it could be the next great leap forward for some fortunate club.

Around 10 years ago, the average DP age was 33 and change. Now it's 27 and change. It dropped by 6 years, and the average age of the most recent batch of DPs added to the league was 25 and change. Take one look at Atlanta, and their trio of stars that are aged 23, 23, and 22. This is the new direction of the league, and this is how successful expansion clubs are coming into the league. Oh, one other thing, and this is unrelated to that link. If you compare the average ages of seven-figure players in MLS and Liga MX, MLS now has a lower average age. It's pretty close, but MLS used to have a much higher average and now it's slightly lower than what our Mexican counterparts are doing. MLS is actually pushing all the right buttons at the upper end of player salaries. Literally everything else needs work on some level, but this in particular is something that's being pretty well handled.

I agree no old people. They make the league look like a retirement league.

I like how MLS how it is but I don't like how I have to either pay to watch games on MLS live and I don't get ESPN

The one thing that really aggravates me is the USL affiliation thing. I live near Pittsburgh where the Riverhounds play, and we have players on the club that not only have contracts with our "affiliate" the Crew, but other teams as well. Really?! Really?! Then why not call it a feeder system instead of a farm system? It would make a lot more sense. I disagree with you on promotion and relegation for several reasons, and even though I'm not a big soccer fan (I just think watching people kick a ball around for 90+ minutes on TV in a non contact sport and fake injuries is absolutely boring and stupid), I think we can agree on one thing... We want to see a sport that will dethrone the MLB and the NFL in the big 4. Just remember, that will never happen with promotion and relegation.

No one would support single standings, serious fans would leave in droves if u think TV ratings are bad they'll be a lot worse

You are ignoring the facts. The first team in NY plays in the state of New Jersey and the first team in LA plays in the City of Carson (LA County/Galaxy) 12 miles south of proper LA (LAFC).

Well they are the two best options in the west conference and Sacramento have 20k or more fans and us having 6k+ physically (probably because its fucking hot) coming to games they will feel cheated. And the LAFC thing us freaking ridiculous, but then again money is a powerful thing.

But see California is huge state so it needs more teams California can be its own country so ??

Why should you change a system that works well in the whole world? Open leagues, the best goes up, the worst goes down. For Americans is this the save way, because they know it from other sports in their country, but Football can you play everywhere on a field with 22 man and a ball, put 4 jacket's on the floor as goal and you have a football field.

The MLS should have promo and Regulation like Europe, but it should keep the playoffs (which can make the league more exciting than European Leagues) and also stay with the current schedule (since it will only have to compete with baseball)
