    I... unironically love this version of Dune. It has a certain quality to it like a recital of Beowulf, or the reading of a historical saga. It's a lot of "Paul was here and did this. Paul went there and said that." to it. It's stilted. But enthralling. And, for me, the sheer grandeur of some scenes - the music and the visuals - even though static, or perhaps because they are static, have the feeling of a great imperial hall, or a place burdened by a history of empire and rule. There is something about Lynch's Dune which, for me, captures better than anything else the sheer scale of the story. The fact that you aren't watching a tale about the rebel prince. You are watching the terrible, inexorable unfolding of history before your eyes. Like standing at the foot of the mountain and seeing the avalanche thunder down upon you.

I’d also recommend checking out the Spice Diver Edit (that’s available on KZread). It reintroduces most of the missing bits of footage that were used in the TV (apart from the TV cuts horrid prologue). It’s also broken into three sections like the book & has slight changes to the pacing.

He's been open for years that *his* ideal version of Lord of the Rings has everything from both the books and the cut movie content thrown in. Ultimately though, he had to be careful in what he chose because some of the book's scenes and moments didn't work in the movie, whereas some of the planned movie exclusive content didn't work in accordance with the books. The shields DO come up again in the movie. You show the scene Duncan Idaho uses a shield while fighting the Sadaukar before taking a lucky/precise shot to the head. Shields are important in the backstory to explain why people use low-tech and melee weapons. When everyone has Shields to protect against "normal" weapons and the effect Lasguns have on shields(nuclear explosion) melee weapons are the most effective weapon. The Adventures of Tintin comic series has a massive cultural influence in Europe (unfortunately not in USA) so I'm sure many European viewers would love your take on the movie. It is an absolutely great adaptation with great cast (Jamie Bell, Andy Serkis, Daniel Craig, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and etc.), great music by John Williams, great everything and is super fun, even to a viewer who never heard of Tintin before. I think it's a masterpiece and would love to see you do a video about it. On a side note, it would be cool if you did a video on one of the old Jackie Chan movies (Iike Project A for example), since his Hong Kong action movies are really fun and easy to watch.

I asked my mom if I could borrow the book from the library and she smiled and said "top shelf, sweetie." We had our own copy, still in my posession 21 years later despite how hard I am on books. It was late but I read the whole thing that night and was instantly obsessed. I've read it cover to cover over 30 times, and go back to favorite passages often. My English teacher loaned me her copies of Dune Messiah and Children of Dune, and I blasted straight through those two and onto the library to get the last three. I love the whole series, especially the improvements in the characterization of women in the last two books. Some of what was written of women in the first book had me like "shit, this is tens of thousands of years in the future, and yet so obviously 1960s."

The design team said that it wasn't that simple they need constraints to work under to produce a good design. David the proceeded to just grab a random historical book with illustration slam it open to a random page and go "here. This is what house Harkonan looks like." They then proceeded to do each of the houses and groups like that.

    Like most 'flops' from great directors they go on to be highly influential. The campy haute fashionable costumes and set designs have become a sc fi standard, in fact Lynch's Dune seemed to have a huge impact on fashion designers such as Alexander McQueen, Which in turn fed back into the film world, from the Fifth Element to the Hunger Games. Also the post-modern splicing of the ancient with the modern, science and the mystical you see in most sci-fi these days. Plus just as in Dune, inter-planetary politics are taken more seriously now, no longer cheesy platitudes to fill in between special effects and set pieces. Dune was basically ahead of its time and might be still ahead of our times, that is in a kind of Shakespearean drama in space kinda way. But in the end, the dialogue couldn't sustain the screen-time it was given, Herbert maybe a great sci-fi writer, but he's no Shakespeare. That said when the more theatrical actors got hold of the lines, the dialogue could spring into life. Lynch should/ve recruited his former colleagues from the Elephant Man - Gielgud, Hopkins, and Hurt. Americans and Continentals doing Shakespeare in space falls a little flat. But Lynch should've gone full Shakespeare, and made something impenetrable to the common punter. After all, the far future, like the past- is going to be hard to follow. Perhaps needing several viewings to truly understand. You might even make the case for subtitles I think if he had full artistic freedom, he would've done. No point being half way impenetrable - you've gotta go the whole nine yards. As he now understands.

    I saw the new movie a few weeks ago and my dad was so mad I hadn't seen this movie yet, so he made me watch it. The best way I can describe it is as a fever dream. This movie stopped making any sense to me after about half an hour, and at some point I think the scriptwriters realized: Oh no, we only have 20 minutes of screentime left, but aren't even half done telling the story... ah, it'll be FINE. And just cut stuff left and right. I think Chani has a total of about 3-5 scenes in the movie, and goes from "who the F*** is this dude" to "I love you Paul" in a single scene, which was the point where I just gave up trying to understand what was happening. I think my father has VERY rose-tinted glasses when it comes to this movie, but even with all the flaws it has, it does have some redeeming qualities with its practical effects, and just the "weird factor" it has. Also: SPACE PUGS

    @Maxim N Visually Dune 2021 was stunning, but there was something off about it and Semper Vigilio was right, it missed a soul and was too sterile and don't get me started on Hans Zimmer's soundtrack which was just so dissapointing. It was too loud, to mish mash and in the end I still couldn't hear a single theme in it just a mass of loud sounds. I hope Dune 2 will be better.

    I love the 2021 Dune for its passion, authenticity, especially the relationship between the characters. For example, I thought the SyFy miniseries did a better job than the 1984 version to establish a mother (Jessica) who loves her son (Paul), and the 2021 movie does an even better job yet. I felt all the major relationships in 2021 were far less wooden, sterile, etc, than the 1984 version. That said, the 1984 Dune is freaking awesome as well for its over-the-top portrayals; I am especially a fan of the Harkonnens from 1984, even where they veer off from the books. Just an insane good time with those villains, among the more memorable in movie history. I don't know, this 2021 movie seems to be using the technology we have at the moment for the best artistic reasons, establishing epic world-building shots, invoking similar emotions as experienced from the source material books.

  • @Real_MisterSir

    @Real_MisterSir

    2 жыл бұрын

    Not your theater, it's as if they're trying to make it an opera with the sound level. Also the music implementation is done in a way as if they're trying to make every single scene be epic or awe inspiring, which can be reeeeally tiring over time - and considering this is a 3 hour movie the sound level is hammered into your brain without any real pauses. Idk to me it felt like the screenwriters didn't know what to do with the source material, besides trying to make it grand at every opportunity they had. But essentially when everything is trying to outshine eachother, essentially nothing stands out and it just becomes loud (both audibly, and visually too). I found Dune 2021 an interesting experience, albeit not one I'm gonna be remembering in detail in the future. My image of it is more that it's a movie that tries to be more than it is. Trying to appear monumental, when in reality it's quite mundane and basic. Alas, I'm never one to complain about new big screen sci fi adventures.

  • @dig8634

    It was extremely loud. I had no issue with the names however, since living in Norway, where English is very well understood, we still have captions in Norwegian for those that need it in the cinema. Not sure I'd have needed it tbh, I find it more annoying than helpful normally, but I like that they make it more accesable for others.

    Quick thoughts on the new one. Sure they dropped a lot of exposition dumps, and didn't attempt to do the voice overs of peoples thoughts. Both good ideas. Unfortunately though they dropped the most context and direct exposure to WHY most of what is happening is happening. So many important scenes and characters are cut or reduced to nearly nothing. They aslo added some scenes that seemed good in the moment but after did nothing but spend time that could have been put back into important elements. Overall I enjoyed it. Tonely it was perfect, visually it was perfect, and they got a lot of amazing actors. They also had creative solutions to problems of adaptoin Dune. I just wish some of them were given a chance to have rolls. Despite all the issues with teh 84 version, it had character and characters. The new one falls short on giving much weight to anyone besides Paul, his mother, and Leto (sometimes).

    I think it’s really lovely to see the Lynch version finally receive the love it deserved. For decades now, me and my mates could never fathom why it was always tarred and feathered by the ‘supposed’ critics and TRUD FANS alike. The scene of the Navigator will always have a sacred place in my heart, as it epitomizes what Dune is actually all about, and their reason to personally visit the emperor is the catalyst for the story - none of which is truly given any credence in the nearly six hours of the new movies. The music in the 84 version is also some of the best in cinema.

    Speaking of movies you should do for this channel, why isn’t there a video for Dark City? Totally underrated, which is right up your alley.

    I absolutely love this movie. In no small part, because it was my introduction to David Lynch. And I've never been the same. (In a good way.)
