    Honestly I think the biggest issue with "Black Adam kills bad guys, therefore he's bad" is that in modern superhero movies the heroes kill the villains all the time. Superman is effectively meant to be the paragon definition of what heroism, and out of the 4 villains he's gone up against in the DCEU, 3 of them didn't live to see the end credits. Hell, even those mercs/terrorists at the beginning of BVS probably ended up in body bags after he sent them through solid walls. It makes the whole thing come off a hypocritical and kinda half assed

  • @EclipseHedgehog

    @EclipseHedgehog

    Well superman wasn't really much of a beacon yet on day 0 and he was just Kal-el in Man of Steel, no kryptonite was established yet, you couldn't fly Zd to another planet because he'll just come back to earth, no prison on earth could hold him, who made it clear he wasn't going to stop. "There's only one way this ends Kal. Either you die, or I do!" then you have Doomsday which is practically a zombie Zod which doesn't count, and steppenwolf (self explanatory) technically aquaman and wonderwoman helped give the finishing blow. As for the mercs/terrorists in BvS Clark clearly states he didn't kill anyone in that scene. and of course with this movie finally bringing up a "no killing!" rule to abide by; they're okay with it if its literally satan when hawkman said "beat his ass"...im pretty sure they're using this as a joke by this point. and while on the subject; when you think about it; batman brought up this "no killing" rule in the nolan movies, yet Batman killed in those movies as well, accidentally or not even if it was by protecting others and yet not a single person peed their pants over it.

    @@EclipseHedgehog This was less a critique of the Snyderverse specifically and more a critique of Superhero films in general, but if the movies keep having to go out of their way to engineer scenarios in which Superman has to kill his villains or has no particular interest in stopping them from dying, that demonstrates that the film makers are aware that not killing his villains is a core tenet of his character but they aren't terribly interested in portraying it. And they don't explicitly have to. Batman '89 is the best Batman movie and he straight up murders The Joker. The issue is that, from a meta perspective, them making such a big deal about Black Adam killing people pretends like they've actually cared about heroes not killing villains in the past, which they blatantly haven't. Its a disingenuous notion, upon which our understanding of Black Adam as an antihero is built

    16:46 - My theory is that if Fate hadn't sacrificed himself, Hawkman would have been stabbed for real (because he wouldn't have had the helmet to cast the illusion), and it would have been Fate holding Sabbac down at the end there. Fate sacrificed himself because he knew Hawkman could still fulfill that role, and this way his friend survives.

    I don't think the skateboard kid has a John Connor- Terminator 2 relationship with Black Adam. I was so excited for this movie, and it at first it seemed like they nailed it, the Justice Society, Black Adam's power and brutality, the inclusion of Intergang. This movie should have been about an evil supervillain fighting the golden age of heroes, and the predecessors to the Justice League, but it didn't happen, because the Rock's didn't want to be seen as the villain, or even make a small cameo in a Shazam movie, when he's playing the arch rival to Shazam. Imagine if an actor playing Lex Luthor didn't want to be a villain in a Superman movie.

  • @maniac7770

    To be fair, there's always time for them to demonstrate Black Adam in his more villainous light, but I was fine with this because it's A) Black Adam's movie, and B) he's staying *mostly* in Khandaq and getting his bearings, so it makes sense for him not to necessarily be up to some scheme that requires he be stopped. Yet. And while he is brutal to his enemies, I think it's not unreasonable to Black Adam on his first outing as caring about the land that his home has become. I'd imagine for the Lex Luthor analogy, it'd be like if we got the movie LUTHOR, following Lex as he takes the reigns of Lex corp, building up his ambitions while defining his motivations, and simultaneously building up a dislike of Superman, whose actions could be largely in the background. It wouldn't need to focus on Lex as a villain, because I doubt he sees himself as the villain of his own story, even if some of his actions are of nebulous morality at best.

    You hit the nail on the head. There should never have been a Black Adam movie before having him be the villain of Shazam. This should have been rated R. As a Black Adam fan, I will tell you that this version diverges greatly from both his modern and Bronze Age comic book counterpart. But in many ways that’s a good thing. It’d be hard to root for a man who killed his nephew to gain more power. It’d be hard to root for a man who took the world to war and spared neither the innocent or the guilty. I feel like if they would have gone the Joker route and showed his villainous origins but also showed why became that way it would have felt more earned. Or if he was the one who killed his family but on accident because he couldn’t control his powers as they weren’t meant for him. He’s not pure of heart. He’s done many irredeemable things. Still, he’s the anti-villain/antihero you root for sometimes. I love this character for the same reason uce loves the character. As a Brown kid seeing this Brown man go toe to toe with powerhouses and protect his people without mercy was something I had never seen before. I was hoping to see more of him but seeing him on the big screen was a dream come true.

    To me this one worked 90% just because Johnson is such a Lighthouse of pure Charisma. Sure, that makes it hard for anyone to genuinely "dislike" him - But hey. You wanted a Black Adam Movie with The Rock - thats what you get. Its not even close to perfect - but its a damn good time. I liked it.

    It's a shame the Rock went for hyping up the Superman rivalry instead of Black Adam's actual nemesis, Shazam. And that Shazam 2 didn't have any mention of or connection to Black Adam. Either way, I enjoyed both movies, and I definitely agree with the sentiment that "I really don't need perfect films, I need enjoyable ones" and I enjoyed both of them.

    I agree with what you said about not needing perfect movies, but enjoyable ones. Too often movies are seen as "bad" because they don't do incredibly at the box office, or have some flaws. But I love them anyway, because I enjoy watching them. Sometimes I just want to kick back and watch a movie, not critique it or pick apart every plot point. You're allowed to enjoy things. And, in all honesty, what makes a "perfect" movie?

Black Adam is exactly what I imagine how a man with superhuman strength uses it, no bullsh*t, no wasting time on useless chit chat. And Dr Fate is SO GOOD, the costume, the CGI, I really hope that we could see him in the future but really sad that they got Henry Cavil in for our hope up and the squashed it

    I liked characters a lot in this movie. Story felt a bit generic - although Black Adam journey felt earned, I agree that The Rock is just too darn likeable, but I am ok with that, let him play it. Shame a bit that it had to come out when people were kinda tired with old DCEU, so box office makes sense. Also it couldn't rely on Shazaam! connection in marketing, etc. Anyway, if this even stays standalone, I gonna rewatch now and then anyway. I liked interactions of the team and secondary characters quite a lot.

    Going into this movie I wasn't expecting a lot but the supes credit scene was a welcomed surprise even though its not a thing anymore. the thing that wasn't the best were the would be emotional hits that amon and the people of kandaq had at the end which felt too weird and undeserved since we spent most of the time with BA and the JSA, I know the people were overcoming their oppressors, but i didnt feel the stakes behind it. I say keep the parent/child thing going for one more movie and make it Bullet Train. My only justification is with 'The Elder', 'The Father', and the fathers little boy relationship throughout the movie. I just wanna see all of the wins you can come up with

    Always appreciate a wins video. Unfortunately the Rock was apparently a real Diva when it came to this movie, he didn't even want Zachary Levi to cameo in it. He practically said he doesn't want Black Adam to be associated with Shazam. Which is confirmed by the fact that they used the same story elements, but completely retconned Shazam. Shazam said that Black Adam released the Seven Deadly Sins on the world, the Sins then killed the Wizards. But Black Adam just straight up changes that and says Adam killed them when they tried to imprison him. So Rock literally didn't care about the Shazam story. Plus, i found this movie fairly boring because you can clearly see The Rocks "no losing fight" clause. He literally never loses. In fact, this movie has ALL THE PROBLEMS that the scourges of internet SAID CAPTAIN MARVEL HAD. So I'm salty about that. Anyway, hope Glass Onion is winned soon!
