People need to realize: Daniels swept most critics awards through the whole award season. They even won CCA/DGA, it's an ultimate acknowledgement of how excellently they ditected this movie. Not to mention most directors might not even understand their creative process and the chaotic nature of their movie. They deserve everything

The Daniels bring such a breeze of fresh air into the movie industry. Unlike traditional filmmakers, you can make movies with all your original ideas and not afraid to be called weird. Besides that they created the most healthy and productive environment on set. They deserve the best director hands down, no question

Lies again? What if you had the power to change everything?

Fully deserved, this movie was impeccably directed. If it hadn't been, this whole crazy story would've never worked.

The Daniels achieved the impossible with this film. In an era where there is almost no originality anymore and many movies are made just to make a quick buck. They come along, visionary people like them, and manage to make something tremendously special. To make something so absurd become so moving is a very difficult task and they did it perfectly. I would have loved to see a tie with Spielberg for his wonderful "The Fabelmans" but I am completely happy with the victory of this great duo.

While I'm sad that Banshees or The Fabelmans didn't win, I'm still delighted that Everything Everywhere scooped it up.

The Daniels join Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins (West Side Story), and the Coen Brothers (No Country for Old Man), becoming the third pair of directors to win Best Director. They joined the Coens in winning for screenplay, directing and Best Picture. Not bad Daniels, in being their second feature film after Swiss Army Man.

For West Side Story they brought in Robert Wise as director after the producers fired Jerome Robbins as original director when he was costing them too much money. When they won for best director, neither one mentioned or thanked the other in their acceptance speech. Jerome Robbins was the original director or choreographer when West Side Story played on Broadway.

let's be honest: AMPAS has gotten this category so RIGHT in this last decade. Jane Campion, Alfonso Cuarón, Bong Joon-ho, Chloé Zhao, Ang Lee, Alejandro González Iñárritu, Damien Chazelle, Guillermo del Toro and... now Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert. They all rocked this category. Even in the years when 'best picture' was really questionable, the directors winner has been tremendously right (I really hope Paul Thomas Anderson, Greta Gerwig, Denis Villeneuve, Yorgos Lanthimos, Mary Harron, Lone Scherfig will join this group in the future)

Usually best director and best picture go hand in hand when they have given out the Academy Awards. I have noticed that since 1998 best director and best picture have been split 10 times among two different films and that has rarely happened that much before in Oscar history.

Well didn't the streak technically break because Scheinert was born American unless he's like Chazelle, who has some ethnic background of a family. But 2010 should definitely been Fincher's year winning best director.

These 2 weird and amazing men are the same 2 men who directed that "Turned down for what" music video. Daniel Kwan was the Asian guy humping everyone in the video. Congrats Daniels! It's so cool and it's so cool to be weird! So very well-deserved! How refreshing was this? These two are awesome and what an incredible movie! It deserved the sweep!

Rare happens is that all the directors nominated were also nominated for best Orignal screenplay. No adapted screenplay writer is nominated this year.

I just realised the nominees for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay that year were exactly the same (except Spielberg shared the latter with Tony Kushner).

It doesn't happen much anymore, but it did happen a lot in the 90s. Clint Eastwood presented the Oscar to Steven Spielberg, who presented to Robert Zemeckis, who presented to Mel Gibson. So, it happened back then.

Crazy that Steven Spielberg making one of his most personal films ever didn't win a Single Oscar.

This movie comes at the perfect time of COViD and the racial biases towards the Asian community. To see the struggles of all immigrant families particularly Asian families. This brings to light why we do the things we do. It is for our children. ❤❤❤

The second Daniel was more eloquent…he gave a great speech, leaving political opinions OUT OF IT. It’s why Alabama claims him proudly, but not the other guy.

Love the guys, top 10 film for 2022, but...not enough people in this comment section are acknowledging that the remaining 4/5 of the Best Director category's films won NOTHING. :( That should've been Martin McDonagh's Best Original Screenplay Oscar, while I'd personally throw a bone to Todd Field (who has said he might never make another film) via this category, Best Director.

Obvious victory after all the awards previously won by the daniels… but for me Spielberg deserved it, at least the Oscar for directing they should have given him!😉

I disagree. I don't see the Fablemans as a great directing achievement. Even as a fan of the movie.

The Daniels started as an independent, and this great duo ultimately succeeded in winning best director. Although Spielberg may have deserved it for how brilliantly he told his story or McDonagh PS: I'm glad Ruben Östlund was nominated, I hope this is not his first and last Oscar nomination.

Anyone else here been a fan of the Daniels since DJ Snake and Lil Jon's "Turn Down For What" music video which they directed?

Which is quite the opposite of The Daniels who made the movie with the original assumption that “there’s no way in hell that our movie would ever be considered for any major industry awards, but we’re still going to make this movie anyways and the way that we want to!”.

Well, i have nothing against the Daniels; they are very new in this business and the duo already have three Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director(s), and Best Original Screenplay. (What I mean is, I'll watch any-film-any-day-any-where-all-at-once by Paul Thomas Anderson or Christopher Nolan or David Fincher over EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE.)
