How this wasn’t a hit back in 86 will forever be a mystery, in fact it’s incredible to think that this masterpiece of an album didn’t yield one hit single.

Agree. It's hard to argue that is _isn't_ (well written with ingenius hooks, fantastically produced, brilliantly vocally performed, etc.) I can only speculate that it wasn't marketed effectively. Another couple of hidden gems I discovered for myself were _Cathedral Song_ and _Twist In My Sobriety_ by Tanita Tikram. Around 1988ish.

I truly feel like this is an underrated pop classic, but it being that also makes it that more special to people who are willing to dig deeper into the subculture for the real gold. This is a song that will carry me throughout my lifetime musical journey. ❤

underrated by raters maybe, but in the 90s we fell in love , fought for our loved ones, struggled and married with this song in the background

i agree with all thats been said here, it's a crime that this song did'nt even hit the top 70!.... it's a classic slice of 80s magic, Tracy and Ben were once my super heroes.... today they are my saviours!, this kinda stuff is what today's music is lacking, pure genius and REAL instruments!

So true! I read her memoir, she worried about every LP and song they did would not be understood trying even themselves -what was their sound? Each new LP practically a different fan base. Yet in retrospect - like you said- “they could play or song whatever they wanted” and it was perfect. Their self doubt. So unnecessary. I listen now- there isn’t one song that wasn’t brilliant! From the lyrics, voice, backing, production. ❤️

This album--in 1986, right after graduating high school--is when I first REALLY got into Everything But The Girl. A friend of mine who was really into The Smiths told me that Johnny Marr played on one of their earlier songs back around '84. Didn't pay much attention to it at the time, since I was sort of obsessing over Madonna then. It was the first track off "Baby, The Stars Shine Bright" that got my full attention. I was like, "Who, and WHAT is this??" It sounded so "different." And at the time, EBTG was criticized with changing their sound with each album, namely with this one. But I loved it, loved it, loved it. I played it continuously---through the fall, winter, then following spring and summer months in '87, and basically throughout my two years in art school (since dropped). And to this day, I can never forget those melodies, the album's rather short 30+ minute run time, and of course, Tracey's look at the time. Pure vintage.

Well said!!! Exactly! They were criticized because new fan bases with each of their LPs. It was so much better than the airplay they got. Reading her memoir they so many doubts they never had to worry like they did. ❤️

I was just thinking that. Holy crap - that had to HURT. Just a year later - boom - this other band has a huge success with a very similar sound - fashion etc. I don't know that they stole from them (though the look for their video must've been lifted from this- I agree) but, they've been committed to their sound for decades after their first two albums. I like Swing Out Sister but I think overall EBTG has a ton more writing talent and obviously longevity. 1986-1990 Jazz/Pop was big. Time has shown EGTG to be incredible songwriters. They definitely have a legacy.

Anyone notice the backwards guitar solo? I think this was not a big hit because there was simply too much competition in the charts at the time. I also personally found the production on this album was over the top. Too much treble and waaaaay too much reverb Tracey's vocals.
