Everyone Can Harmonize (Part 4 - Beach Boys)

Музыка

Using the recorded tracks, we take a popular Beach Boys song and learn the harmony part for it, and practice it together in this video. This is the first of many harmony videos that will employ the same format. I hope you like it!

I met Brian Wilson in a pub and " shouted" him a beer. That means I bought him one and , whenever, he'd shout me one back. Big guy and his bodyguards were huge. Anyway, I'd driven 500 miles to see the Beach Boys, and he was impressed on a Saturday Night, concert on Sunday and a public holiday to drive the miles back to where I was working. Blondie Chaplin was great on a Gibson Les Paul goldtop, Carl on his Epiphone and Dennis was playing Australian Rules Football behind stage ( not much playing of drums but some singing). Great concert and good fun. I knew all their songs from " The Beach Boys Live" double album. Mostly I remember the harmonies and how clever Brian was. A beautiful day in the sun listening to the all last Beach Boys.( Al Jardine, Mike Love etc.) Cheers.

I just love how your utubes attract a huge range of abilities. Beginners to advanced. I used to get so much joy when I would get my toddlers to listen to a series of thirds, followed by a series of 2 consecutive semitones. I’d ask them which sounded “better”. They always answered the “thirds”. (They could barely talk at that age). The neuropsychology behind this still fascinates me.

Great job on this series Aimee. Harmony has always been my passion, but of late, I have found myself having to teach it in order to have someone to sing with. Even people who have sung solo for a long time started to stumble with a song they know when I added a harmony. So, I had to think more about how I learned. Two things I did. One, I didn't know piano, but I had access to one and I could hunt and peck the melody on the keys while singing it. Then it was easy to see the 3rd visually as well as the 5th. Also, when singing harmony, I still may cup my hand over the ear nearest the melody singer to muffle them, and my harmony is clearer to me until I have it down.

So I know this is an older video, but I think still relevant none the less, riiiight?!? 😉 I sing on our church worship team (have for years) and our leader...can she ever sing! But I’m not quite confident enough to hit those really hiiiiigh notes (never have been...it’s all in my head, cuz people are listening 😉😉. Know what I mean?)....anyhoo, so I’m trying to learn how to do harmonies so I can slide down nicely when she goes higher and then pop back into the melodies. I don’t play instruments, If you pointed to a notes on sheet music and asked me which note that was...couldn’t tell ya, I just do it by ear....and it was always hard for me, because my “ear” was trained to match the melody. I’d try to do a harmony, but I’d often go right back into matching that melody, because that’s what I heard...and then comes the high note. Oy. Well, let me tell you, your series here is the one I have learned the most from. I’ve watched a few other videos on harmony, but you teach in a way, I understand. I think it hit home in the 3rd of the series, learning the (do ray mi) actually....learning the 3rds part. Thank you soooo much! I will keep practicing! Blessings! 😃 Linda... P.S. can’t wait to hear our leader say, “nice harmony” 😃

Really great! I already jammed around with friends and figured how to harmonize in thirds ( the high ones ) and it works lots of times ( not full proof though, it needs some more work). I'm really glad this 4 part solidifies the knowledge about it because i was looking for something like this for ages! And you really bring it home clearly. But i was wondering if you would do another one for lower registers? generally, lower thirds tend to be harder to hear but would fit my voice better ( and many others i'm sure). I can really get the correct pitch when i sing high but it doesn't suit me, to say it mildly. Any tips would be appreciated. Cheers Aimee

Thanks, Aimee, huge fan here! 😊 And also a Lennon-McCartney fanatic. Rank amateur here, but I've gotten to the point that I'll try to sing a "missing" harmony, for example if only John and Paul were singing, I'll make up a fake George harmony. But one song that has me stumped, when all three are singing: "Yes It Is". What are George and John doing there, so crazy!! If love if you would break that song down some time! Till then, thanks for all you do!!

Hey Mrs. Nolte, I’d like to know if you’ve ever heard of this thing called showchoir. It’s a type of Choral music that typically features popular music set to singing and dancing to communicate a story of some type, it is similar to Glee BUT THEY ARE NOT THE SAME. Anyways I was wondering if you could dissect a few of my favorite show choirs and sort of explain what musical elements are going on within their shows. Here are the groups that you can see on KZread: Los Alamitos Sound Fx 2016 Los Alamitos Sound Fx 2018 John Burroughs Powerhouse 2014 John Burroughs Powerhouse 2018 Clinton Attache 2015 Clinton Attache 2018 Carmel Ambassadors 2016 Just to name a few of the greats, please analyze one of these videos!!! Omg, this one is SO MUCH EASIER than the other ones. Singing the low part is infinitely easier than singing the high part for me. I guess my comfortable singing range is like G2 - A4 (I can kinda get to F4 if I’m trying to wake up the dead with my scream and don’t care about being in tune) or something weird like that. And I can get to E2 if no one needs to hear me. So I guess the majority of everyone in the world would prefer to sing higher than me.

Aimee Nolte Music I loved this exercise! You are the master teacher, so whatever you think is the right next step is probably the best. For what it’s worth, I know learning a harmony line like this that you teach us and practicing it 20 times until I can sing it well with your melody isn’t the same as being able to just start singing a third above/below some random melody. (Which is what I really want to do one day). But it feels like a great step in that direction. getting more fun examples like this to practice will probably help us keep progressing.
