Lots of people think you're born with the ability to harmonize as a singer or instrumentalist, but this is FALSE FALSE FALSE. You can practice the skill of harmonizing and it's easy to start learning. The method I show in this video is how I taught myself to hear creative harmonies and I've been using it, practicing it and teaching it for many years.

    Rewatching some older videos. Listening has been the biggest improvement in my harmonies. It like when I was learning to draw. You’re really becoming a better at observing. You already have the motor skills.

    A barrier has FINALLY been broken. I've sung along with every one of my favorite Chains records and I hear the harmonies so well. Layne was ethereal and while I can't sing as well as he, I know I'm hitting the notes Jerry did and hitting Layne's in lower octaves. What you did for me here is helped me to be able to harmonize with myself now. Thank you. I've been struggling with a particular new tune for months. I wanted layering and big pre choruses and choruses. Tomorrow the revelation gets put into motion. Much love Chris- Chris;)

    Hi Chris, I have been trying to learn to harmonize for a while now, but because of you I have already cracked the code, so thank you for this video. It has helped me immensely... it gives me the leads on the simplest yet effective way to train my ear and to harmonize. The code has finally been broken. I can harmonize with any song now. Thank you Chris for this.

    This is a great idea for learning the feeling of intervals. The part where you were going 1 3 and then the 5 in the octave below probably confuses people who are newer to these concepts, but still great advice.

    I learned that singing is just humming LMAO. It's kind of funny when you figure it out. The only thing that was tricky was breath support and trusting the amount of air flow you use. All those isolation exercises such as Nay, BuB, Buh, Wee, etc help you figure that out lol. The notes are automatic and beginners struggle with air flow and telling the difference between resonance. It's kind of funny when you realize this. Now I just focus like I'm going to hum and sing and now all my registers are blended. All of us start off using way to much tension which is what I did and though you had to scream those high notes out but that is wrong. It's actually easy, it's just understanding that's hard. It's your brain re learning where to focus and what muscle you should actually be using. You can even intensify it with compression after you got it down. I can even do vibrato now! I couldn't believe it that I achieved it. I'm learning to sing in harmony now so I can sing along with KZreadrs on here.

    I have usually been able to pick up music by ear- the names of notes make very little sense to me, and I have no idea what the numbers are in reference to. That being said, I’m practicing the ability to harmonize more on a whim, and this has been really helpful as an exercise! You’re an amazing musician, beautiful to listen to. Thank you for putting this out to the world.

    Chris, are you originally from a folkie/blues background? The folkies I know have always used the thumb to fret the bass notes, and we keep getting told by more classically taught players that this is wrong and you should have your thumb hidden behind the neck. I've never seen anyone else use the thumb like this, but I'm here for it :D

    Can anybody answer to my dumb question? If we play 6-5-4 strings on G, 5-4-3 string on C - which ones do we play on D? Oh, and another quiestion for vocalists who also plays guitar: How do I sustain good posture if I'm not that good on guitar and have to look at frets and stuff? I notice that sitting also effects my support, so any tips on torso and hands positioning?

  • @faolangrady

    @faolangrady

    The D chord is played with strings 4, 3, 2, and 1, where the notes of the fourth and second string are the same (D). As far as playing and singing, I'd say get more comfortable with playing before you sing along. You can always record yourself playing and then sing over that, but I think it's worth it to just take the time (shouldn't be that long if you practice regularly) to learn how to play through a song without having to look at your hands too much.

    Imma be straight up with you. I don't understand the stuff you said at first, however I play guitar, and sing. I don't know how to read music though. Just learn to play without thinking about it at all. Then sing. You can't think about both. Singing is the priority though. If you mess up a little on guitar it's not that noticable. It'll get better as you work at it.
