Thanks for the review Witse @White Sea Studio ! 3 things : - we are adding our own version of the Nebula in 2 weeks - we are adding many more modules [including waveform] asap - your are totally right about the consequences of being above OR under the LUFS target. Thus, we are considering adding an Above tolerance and an Under tolerance.

Wytse, your rant studio on lighting/looks and the whole vanity of our age... that was golden. You're the real deal man 😂 I do spend more time than I "should" customizing the looks of my workspace and even of my Ableton projects. However, I truly enjoy matching my space and tools to the vibe I'm going for in my music, and for me personally it makes me more likely to spend more time in that space. That being said, I will never in a thousand years pretend it makes my music better or anything. Those are two completely separate things and as with anything else, there is a point of diminishing returns.

Few things, Lufs "target" is a dynamic range you are allowed to play inside, (the "target" number is actually one extreme end on this range) So you can go above but not below, do whats best for the music at the same percieved volume. For this reason and many others, I use external metering after my monitor control, so my volume to my ears are independent of different loudness:es, platforms etc, and I use the monitor control to playback and reference quickly inside and outside of daw. Its good to use rms at a few seconds reading or lufs short term for this :)

I have had a petpeeve for 50 years all the way back VU meters. The terms decibel, volume and loudness are for perceived sound only. What these terms are used for in the music/recording for the last umpteen years is properly the Amplitude and Delta thereof in an electronic circuit.

  • @dykodesigns

That looks quite useful if the iPad version could be used as an audio unit plugin in Cubasis. I use that for the mixing of Korg Gadget projects but I have no way of metering the LUFS. Currently I have to use Youlean Loudness meter on my PC with Cubase to check the dynamic range and fix / adjust the mix there if I feel the need to do so. I’m kind of obsessed with dynamic range and the waveform display gives me a really good impression on whether I succeeded in making the mix dynamic or not. It looks kinda neat, especially with the purple on black colour scheme.

The interesting part about what you said was I loved that cd (before I went to Audio Engineering School). If you hadn’t gone, then would it matter? You loved that CD... I mean I agree with you on what you’re saying, and the saddest part is degrading quality goes unnoticed even by audio enthusiasts until they start to learn mixing themselves. All we can do is make a product we love. It matters to us, what I wonder is why it didn’t matter to the mixer/producer/mastering engineer who produced that record? Yet, it was loved... Conundrum.

I love Decibel so far its amazing. still much cheaper than your fancy flux analyser which is $400!!!!! for a perpetual licence. Decibel will be adding new modules soon as well so the features you want will most likely appear very soon. also if you are a member of Puremix Decibel is FREE!!!! I was using spl hawkeye which is ok but the scaling sucks on older ipads and its laggy on sidecar without a cable. I got it cheap during a plug in alliance sale and cant afford flux so Hawkeye was the best i could find for a decent price so i am extremely happy with getting Decibel now. In Decibel you can also add dust and dirt with old VU meters which you missed a very important feature. hoping they add some different screws option in the future.

When you played music through apple music, did you use a third party software like loopback to run the au/vst of Decibel? I.e. does Decibel read metering off the computer’s audio output instead of an instance of the plugin inserted in the DAW or loopback? Asking because in the scenario of using a room correction software like sonarworks, I always put my analyser plugin before sonarworks so that the analyser is not affected by the correction curve of sonarworks. I think being able to see the analyser on music straight from streaming platform would be very helpful, but if the meters are post room correction, that would not be so helpful.

yup. - 12 is usually where your gear works better and where your analog converters convert better. All you have to do is is calibrate Decibel's VUs to your specs and off you go. You can even send it to a mobile device on the side and keep an eye on your recordings in real-time, making sure your needle hovers around 0VU.

#WhiteSeaStudio Wytse... I'd very much like to know which Metering Suite is "The Most Accurate"! The problem I have, is that most of them are not accurate! Meaning...if it says it's .-01 db it's really +.01 db and clipping in a not good way! Is there any way to figure out which company has the most accurate plugin suite? Or maybe specifically? Like say Nugen Audio has the most accurate Phase Meter, and Flux Audio has the most accurate RTA, etc. Wondering because it will make my job a lot easier knowing which one I can trust. As they are all a bit off when mastering and that's causing BAD distortion that sounds like nails on a chalkboard to me! NOT THE GOOD DISTORTION! I do not have Flux btw, too rich for my blood.

Still can't fathom why some engineers think loud tracks signify the end of the world. Some tracks that are targeted at -14 LUFS can sound very skimpy (which is not great if you aren't aiming for that result), whilst some small minority of metal / EDM tracks, for example, manage to cover a large dynamic range, (going way above -14 LUFS in chorus sections) whilst still sounding loud and impactful.

I don't get it.. Why do all these meters require you to listen to the whole song to get integrated LUFS? kind of useless when I can get the integrated LUFS of my track instantly with the free Loudness extension in the SWS/S&M bundle for reaper.

  • @PROCESSAUDIO

    @PROCESSAUDIO

Because LUFS-I means Integrated. So you need to run the full song in real time in order to get it. You are probably talking about the LUFS-M and LUFS-S which stand for Momentary (400ms) and Short (3s) that you can get instantly. Alternatively Decibel Standalone version has an offline feature where you can drag n drop your files on, and get your result instantly too.

@@PROCESSAUDIO I know. I can instantly measure integrated LUFS with the extension I mentioned. That's why I said that I can get integrated LUFS from it. That's cool. didn't realise that was a thing. SWS/S&M can probably do it from within the DAW because it's integrated into reaper, but it's not technically a plugin that goes on a track. It's sort of like a standalone program that can be used from within Reaper.

I don't know what people mean by thumbs down. Do they mean that they didn't like your production or they didn't like the product? I'm requesting that if my fellow subscribers please be a bit more specific when they thumbs down. It might help us all understand what and why they thumbs down something. Thanks.

  • @PROCESSAUDIO

these are different products. TC works with AES cables whereas Decibel works over wifi or usb. It's also software, so it keeps being updated / fixes and adds new features like new modules. Price point is different too and with Decibel, you can add as many screens as you want.

@@PROCESSAUDIO Yeah, I get they are different products but aimed at solving the same "always on" metering issue. I can see Decibel being much more flexible but I am not sure I'll be willing to have an iPad screen always dedicated to it. Not sure it's for me, but I might try it out. Remarkable job anyway.

phew 130 bugs for a "conclusion" plugin? I dunno, iZotope Ozone, YLMeter, VU Meter, LoudMax all for free do the same job, okay RAM usage is a con argument, but I dunno, it doesn't seem to justify the price imho. And yes, I've seen Dan's video and this video is pure dedication, if ya haven't *DO IT RIGHT NOW*
