The advent of televised wrestling and maybe even the breaking of kayfabe has moved wrestling from a fake combat sport to a real fictional product, storylines and all, and that is probably the best thing to have come out of the mid-1990's in wrestling. (Yes, I am including the Attitude Era, nWo and the whole Monday Night Wars in it, because it would not have happened without the shift in how wrestling is treated.)

Sammartino absolutely deserved number 1. Not just because of his 8-year title reign and then his 3 and half year title reign, but because of all his insanely classic matches, the fact that he always sold-out Madison Square Garden and always put on the greatest matches of all time. Everything about him is what pro wrestling was built on and what it should still be today. There would be no WWE today if it wasn't for his popularity. His matches were pure wrestling clinics, and he made the WWE Championship THE Championship that everyone wanted.

Dominant? What matches were you watching. Won the title off Hulk Hogan at King of the Ring thanks to a camera exploding in Hogan's face. Retained the title against Lex Luger at Summerslam because he lost via count out. At Survivor Series was made to look scared against the Undertaker and his team lost their Survivor Series match. At Royal Rumble retained his title against Undertaker after about 6-8 other heels teamed up to bail Yokozuna out. Retained the title against Lex Luger at WrestleMania thanks to Mr. Perfect disqualifying Lex Luger when he had Yokozuna Beat. Lost to Bret Hart later that night. Yokozuna was the most pathetic monster heel WWE has ever booked.

He's a pure wrestler making his opponents look good (not just simply selling), win or lose. He's not into backstage politicking (well, other than refusing to lose the title to Michaels leading to Screwjob, but not totally his fault and that's a story for another day). @@night6724 Hulk never had the mic skills compared to Rody or even other wrestlers of his era. Hulk had the looks and the size which was what Vince craved back in the early 70s/80s. Or did you forget all about the "glass ceiling" in which smaller wrestlers had to try to get through. Im not saying Hulk wasnt influential to the business, far from it, but Hulk wasn't known for his mic skilsl but rather his physique and gimmick of saying your prayers and taking your vitamins and whatcha going to do when a million hulkamaniacs run wild on you. But in terms of being a natural on the mic, Rowdy Piper and others exceeded him in that area. Gimmick, Promos and Mic skills are three different things in my books. Gimmick is either (or both) company or talent coming up with an idea. Promos is company, talent, marketing team, etc. Granted, Promos back then weren't as scripted but being able to ham it up in front of the camera behind the scenes and doing it live is a bit different. And Mic is when you're on your own in a live environment having to react on the fly where being witty and quick on your feet is king. A good example of this would be Owen Hart's infamous leg kick comment where someone lacks the wits to do real time promos in the heat of the moment at that point in their career. Again, just to repeat, this doesnt mean that Hulk isnt da man, he had a great gimmick, the hulk up in the ring, the good guy attitude, the look, the size, etc etc. He just wasnt the best with the mic, no shame there. Heck, Im a Bret Homer and I know he wasnt the greatest on the mic as well.

I see the mistake saying Cena has 14 reigns wasn't fixed in this version of the list. Cena is a 13 time WWE Champion, 3 of his 16 world title reigns were with the World Heavyweight Title.

I'm not going to lie but for all the reasons you put JBL down as a bad champion in the ranks is the EXACT reason why he was such a good heel champ. I grew up watching the JBL heel champ era, and I HATED JBL. God I hated JBL with a passion. But that's exactly what his character was designed to do. Looking back at it as an adult. It worked, it kept you engaged with the product because you hated him that damn much. Can't hate a gimmick for doing what it said on the tin.

I'd put Yoko higher because he held onto that belt for a good chunk of time after ending Hulkamania.

For me, the Big Gold Belt is the single most iconic *belt* BUT the WWWF/WWF/WWE Championship is the gold standard
