There are many inaccuracies in this 1.From 1945-1949 Germany had a Costa Rica style flag 2.Many german vassals like the ISR or Slovak Republic did have their own flag 3.Italy didn't remove their CoA until after the monarchy was abolished

Fun fact about the Liechtenstein flag change The reason they changed the flag was because of hati, durring the 1936 Olympics in Germany. They realized that hati had the same civil flag as them, so to avoid confusion, a year later, they put a crown at the top to make it easier to tell the difference.

I also noticed that Georgia missing a flag change in 90's until sometimes in the noughties they had a flag with some white and black in the left corner on a sort of brownish canvas. Edit: google Georgian flag 1992-2004 for picture.

There's a few things wrong though, Spain obviously, but also Italy and Slovakia. Italy in 1943 became the German Puppet State, The Italian Social Republic with a different flag, and Slovakia was an autonomous Satellite State of Germany (Similar to Warsaw Pact Nations during the Cold War) and had their own flag.

Before becoming a puppet state, Italy (or at least half of it) was invaded and briefly annexed by Germany (during Operation Achse/Alarich). That's likely why they choose to just use the german flag (like with France).

The thing about Poland after German invasion is, it was a Reichskommissariat called "Generalgouvernement", while the Soviets only annexed the Polish lands into Byelorussian and Ukrainian SSRs

The flag of Czechia and Slovakia during WWII is incorrect, Czechia (protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia) used tricolor from top to bottom White, Red and blue, and Slovakia used White, Blue and Red.

Is no one gonna talk about why Abkhazia is included as country? Frankly I've never seen the flag of this region anywhere... I mean it's basically just an autonome terretory in Georgia only recognised by Russia, Venezuela, Nicuaragua and Nauru

Abkhazia has a history all the way back to the Roman times. I would be okay with them being independent, but not as a russian puppet state like it is today.

There are many mistakes with the former Yugoslav countries: 1. Macedonia had a flag featuring the controversial Vergina Sun from 1992 to 1995, and it was only changed to the modern one in 1995. 2. SR Serbia only removed the red star from its flag in 1992, while the modern serbian flag was adopted at the time of Serbia and Montenegro, in 2004. 3. The Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina (1992-1995) had a different flag from the modern one, and that flag continued to be used even after the Dayton agreement (1995), until its change to the modern flag in 1998. 4. Just like the modern Serbian flag, Montenegro also adopted their modern flag in 2004, not 1994.

As a Hungarian, I cried. Such beauty our frag is yes, but almost every head of the state made a new flag for us.

They forgot Georgia and Russia had other flags when they gained independence

Not sure if anyone has already mentioned the mistake with the flag of Georgia, but their current flag with the red crosses on the white background was not adopted until 2004 and before that their flag was predominantly red with white and black rectangles in the upper left portion of the flag. Serbia & Montenegro stayed as Yugoslavia until 2003 when it changed its name to Serbia & Montenegro until their split in 2006.

It's a great video, but I think what it's missing is some countries coming into and out of existence. There are many nations or even occupational states that had some interesting and unique flags that simply doesn't exist anymore or existed for a really short time. Just take Germany splitting into two or Italy being occupied while also having a pro allied side existing at the same time.

The reason Albania gets that flag in 1939 is because Albania was an occupied state by Italy until 1940 in which they became a protectorate of Italy under a fascist regime and then in 1943 Germany occupied Italian gains in the balkans including Albania in which it became a German protectorate instead of an Italian protectorate and became a reichkomensarriat (probably killed that spelling) of Germany before being freed by British and soviet forces in 1945 becoming communist then becoming democratic and getting it current flag.

1:43 It’s because for 3 different reasons. 1. People are more familiar with the newer flag because that was commonly used at this time 2. It represents the Goverment the best at the time. 3. The Imperial German flag was actually banned a few years before the outbreak of World War 2.

@@LBS1422 Yes, what I meant is that the reason people "get mad when the Imperial German flag gets used for WW2 Germany" as Drew says is actually just because the Imperial German flag was illegal in nazi Germany and the nazi flag was the only official German flag in nazi Germany starting in 1935, not because it’s more fitting.

5:28 You're right, nazi flag was never officially adopted. In Sept. 1943 Italy was split in two, and in Central- Northern part of the country was founded the Italian Social Republic. Its flag was the Italian tricolor, without any symbol on it, even if sometimes they put an eagle holing fasces in the center. Italy removed the Savoy family coat of arms NOT in 1945, but in June 1946 after the monarchy was abolished

About the flag change of Andorra in 1939: This was due to a 3 week long period of Andorra being a kingdom under Boris I. who was an exiled Russian nobleman. I don't know exactly how this happened, but it came quickly to an end when Boris declared war on the Diocese of Urgell for not recognising him which then sent some policeman into Andorra who arrested him and Andorra went back to being a co-principality as it is today

the italian flag before 1945 has nothing to do with Mussolini, it was there ever since italian reunification in 1861, the coat of arm in the middle is the one from the royal family at the time. In 1945 Italians chose to become a republic with a referendum, and the coat of arm was dropped from the flag
