Like the video. Im a contractor for navy ships so I use a wide variety of sizes (wrenches, sockets, hex, torx). From 1/2 inch to upwards of 2-1/2 or 3 inch. Husky had a great clearance sale on a 432pc master set for $99 (399-449 origin price) they are a non-stock item, I only two in a 100 mile radius of me. Got one for home and one for work

Truth be told, I own in metric from All tool box brand sockets from Cornwell, Mac, Snap On and Matco. The GearWrench sockets and wrenches are just as nice to work with. Being that I am in my mid 50s the numbering on the sockets blows the other ones away. I am happy with my GearWrench products!

Fun video. I know this is two years old but wanted to offer my 2 cents for the newbies. When I started my tool collection as a kid I found that I needed both deep & shallow sockets but it was never the one I had in my pocket. My first real job as an automotive mechanic had tool trucks there every week. I usually bought Matco because they were easier to afford. But Snappy & Mac got some sales also because they were there on the day I needed the tool. Anyhow I found a Snappy set of semi-deep sockets. I had to try them & they became the most used sockets I owned. They worked 95% of the time. This was my best investment. I will probably hurt some tool snobs' egos with this statement but just because you pay more does not make it a better tool. Just to qualify myself, my toolbox empty cost more than most of the cars I worked on but it was pretty & it said Snap-On. I still have it & it is a good box but has had to have repairs over the years(mostly drawer rollers). I have had so many different names that I forget most of them. I remember buying Benchtop from Kmart which was good but they did get replaced by better names. I preferred Craftsman wrenches but there were times they were too thick. I hated Snap-On wrenches because they were so thin they dug into my hands plus mechanics' hands do not grip well from the way you abuse them. I also bought Stanly which was another good tool. I used Harbor Freight until their prices became too high. It doesn't have to be expensive to be good & just because it is expensive doesn't mean it is good. You will buy what is in your budget & what is available to you. A quarter of my tools are Snappy, another quarter are Mac, & so on because that is the truck that came the most often to the shop I was at. When you have to modify one of your tools to do that one job I can tell you that it doesn't hurt as bad when it is a Stanly tool as it does when it is a Snap-On tool. I'm pretty sure I have cried a few times when having to grind or weld on an expensive tool.

awesome as usual guy I ordered some oem socket trays regular stand up studs kind of deal just bought the big icon set of half inch hex I needed the 12mm for special lugs on after market wheels doing brakes an rotors on a nice Cadillac for friend of mine 😎

Good advise. I like the 6 point wrenches need to get the gearwrench 6pt. Metric set have an old craftsman usa mde inch set.

Back in the 90's, my first tool set was a Craftsman. It came in a plastic carry all, but the two socket trays, and the ratchet drawer were all removable, and ended up in my toolbox when I finally got one. I wish manufacturers would go back to that style...

I just picked up a basic set of e torx at Home Depot for $9.97 worked great for what I needed them for, I gave my triple squares to my friend because don’t have my VW anymore. I’ll just add my opinion on 6 point wrenches and sockets, you need some in your arsenal that extra grip on a fastener is just a necessity.

When I first started I bought my Gerber box. Which was a a craftsman master set when sears was closing. It’s been a few years and I got to say it holds up for the money. Ofc the only thing I ever lost on it was my 10 mm

That GW set looks really nice and complete! Great review of the various types of sockets the avg. joe may encounter, even us Diy’rs. Splines has Triple Squares are very common on Euro-imports and I think every guy/gal should own a good set. My go-to sockets have been Grey Pneumatic, specifically the semi-deeps. The metal doesn’t deform when used in combination with an impact gun, which is ideal, and the price point is perfect for the shade-tree mechanic. I’d love to get you take on impact; maybe that could be a topic to discuss moving forward. Another big one would be your recommendations for a scan tool for at-home use. I have the Innova and I’d highly recommend, but would love a pro-tip recommendation.

Long ball end hex sockets are a must for my job along with stubby torx, turbo sockets, E torx and some u joint stuff up to 1 1/8" daily use. Crows feet are very useful. Is the pliers video next

it's like my mother and tupperware.. i'm no pro but i do my own and have truck load of tools to show for it. spent a lot in the last couple of years tooling up for random stuff. like mowers, a gmc that i knew was gonna be a money pit, being ready for a breakdown and having some basic tooling in 3 vehicles.. not to mention getting into pneumatic tools and an inverter flux welder.. i've bought 2 sets from tsc, a gear wrench and large socket set from job smart. both left over clearanced out from christmas and way cheap. i have about everything i'll ever need in that 312pc job smart set but it's also nice to grab a small set and run out front or go in the house (damned washer). i've even got a cordless impact and impact driver that i use more quite a bit. as i said, been tooling up quite a bit over the last couple years.. a better paying job and getting into more troublesome fixes for the sake of tinkering on something on the weekend. i'll be honest though, if you are a diy guy just working on your car or random stuff like a damned washer or crusty old john deere, you don't need all that. i don't regret my purchases but i have way more than i need. it's nice not to barrow or run out an buy tools when you need them or have something when you need it. i got by for years with a decent part house set with deep and shallow sae and metric, 1/4 and 1/2" stanley sets. then just getting the stuff i need as i go like torx and allens. he's right, a decent mechanics set will do most fine to start out. i would invest in a set of wobble extensions and universals in addition to that set. vice grips, adjustable wrenches, channel locks, a small assortment of pliers, a cheap set of combination wrenches, and don't do super cheap screw drivers if that starter set doesn't have all that other stuff would be good to get.

I have quite a bit of Kobalt 24V line of power tools. The XTR ½" impact wrench, XTR recip saw, oscillating multi tool, impact driver, and hammer drill. They never let me down and always got the job done. Battery line is reasonable. Yeah, the Milwaukee can drill a timber lock fastner in like 7 secs while the Kobalt does it 8 secs. I'll take a sec slower for fraction of the cost.

Would love your thoughts on the Pittsburg 301 set.

Short version is dont buy any jackstand with the handle design to release it only buy the stands that have pins you put in place threw them

The GW set you bought for $250, were they 6 point sockets or 12 point. Because the link is to a 12pt set, and the 6pt set is like and extra $100.

They are 6-point, he linked to the wrong one which has the same part count (243). The product number for the 6-point one is 80966.

Now need the torx plus bits and E torx plus sockets now.GM and Ford use E Torx plus a lot,one is the newer Ford Truck bed bolts.Grey Pnuematic makes the duo sockets so you don't have to buy chrome sockets.12 point,I buy them for certain applications only.

You've mentioned rounded bolt extraction sockets a few time I'm wondering if you've seen or heard of kincrome lok-on sockets they allow removal of up to 85% rounded nuts n bolts I know kincrome is an Australian owned company but are available in the USA I recommend you check them out mate..iv done a demo with them on my channel if ud like to check it out.. What are eight point sockets for? I have some 1/4" sockets that are like a double square, not triple, but I have never seen a fastener to use it on. Thanks, love the knowledge.

Typically pipe plugs now. The square head fasteners were like the first bolt head designs.

I want to try to see if one of the Mechanic sets will sub a whole tool box, have you tried that? i think you did thry that

you showed torx plus or polydrive sockets instead of "spline" bolts. Euro cars usually use triple squares. i havent seen any spline yet on euro, definitely triple square on seatbelts and seats in VW/Audi and Etorx on Benz. torx on all

Vim or blue point do shorter allen sockets. The snap on ones arent really short compared to vim

We always said...get the 12 point if you are a mechanic and 6 point if you are a bodyman.

I have to respectfully disagree, 6 points is the way to go for general work, I hardly ever use 12 point. Chrome sockets also still have their place for when your "thin" impacts are still too thick to fit.

Please showcase some TEKTON SOCKETS CHROME/IMPACT, ANGLED/REVERSE RATCHETING WRENCHES IF YOU HAVE EM. I work on Ag equipment/machinery and that stuff lives in mud, sand, rocks, chemicals, but I’ll be damned if they don’t get the job done... Co-workers have liked them so much, that even after I go over how affordable they are...they still try to steal them from me lol. WERA is another good one.

As I'm watching this video and thinking...wouldn't it just be prudent to just have impact rated sockets? You can use a hand ratchet with them w/o possibly harming them like using an impact wrench on cr-v sockets...right? I have a set of both and thinking that maybe I should of just got impacts and saved some dough.

Grey pneumatic duo sockets are rated for both. Recently sold my chrome and impact set to consolidate my tools. Plus they look pretty nice.

I've never understood why manufacturers choose odd ball fasteners. It's hard to believe one type is really better. I suspect there are many applications where they could have used a regular hex head.
