Good video. Hand and brain isn't quite right because if the brain announces the piece and location, that isn't a variant. They only announce the name of the piece and the hand has to guess the move and which piece they are thinking about.

I thought up a variant I call "Gravity Chess", where the board rotates 90 degrees every set number of turns. But the pawns still must move from one player's side to the other player's side to promote. I'll have to find someone nearby to explain it to one day 😄

A man by the name of Ed Trice came up with an improvement of Capablanca Chess called Gothic Chess. It is my favorite variant, especially when it is combined with Bughouse. Gothic Bughouse brings a whole new level of insanity to the game.

I genuinely hate the "knight + (insert piece here)" pieces when played in the same game as a regular knight & (insert piece here). It just feels like the Queen vs Bishop/Rook, but worse, because it steps on the toes of a the most niche piece. The only possible exception is the Pawn/Knight, because it's at least kinda interesting Perhaps if Bishop, Rook, Knight, and King were just outright replaced with their hybrid counterparts, it would actually be interesting, or at least more facepaced

About half of these variants is too fast, boring or complicated to play. For example: Atomic and Three Check - too fast Upside Down, Giveaway and Chaturanga - too boring 5D chess, Hexagon and Shogi - too complicated Meanwhile, Chess 960, King Of The Hill, Racing Kings (and some more) - simple, but elegant

I dont find those three variants boring... and since i played them i know what i am talking about. The best/most interesting about Upside Down, and also about Giveaway, is that you hardly know for sure whether you will win or lose in the end. (Also, i dont find Chess 960 elegant nor interesting. But i could be wrong, since i never played that one.)

@@eklektikTubb I've played all of variants I mentioned and I also know, what I'm talking about Atomic and Three Check really too fast, I often play and see games, that have less that 20 moves, by several moves we can just explode about a half of pieces, or we can easily give 2 checks by sacrificing Bishop and Queen, for example, and just try to find third check Chaturanga just have less long-attacking pieces Upside down not so interesting since you can easily make so much Queens, and giveaway - since almost every move is capturing Don't need to mention 5D chess, quantum chess, Chinese and Japanese chess, and also some more with complicated mechanics, some of them might be interesting, but still Hexagon is difficult since it has different board and moves of pieces, good knowing of geometry can help to understand, but still, it's hard to adapt to it Why I like Chess 960, King Of The Hill and Racing Kings? It has only one or two new rules and can make game very different: Chess 960 - pieces are random and we can forgot about openings, just act by situation King Of The Hill - you can win earlier, if you have clear advantage by putting King in center Racing King - you can't make checks at all and everything you need to do - is promote your king to 8th rank Also I like Crazyhouse for mechanics, no matter what it's complicated and every mistake costs much more But I don't like variants, that makes new moves for pieces, like when pawns can go one space horizontally, and also I don't like much variants, that much different from classic chess and have more pieces, that classic ones

@@yukizont How is the board with many queens boring? More queens mean more danger of being checkmated, force you to think and play more carefully. Same for capturing in Giveaway Chess, the danger of getting into forcing/losing line is very high and makes you think many moves ahead. Yes, Chess 960 is where you can forgot about opening and i LOVE openings, that is why i never played this variant and never want to. Nothing new or interesting in that variant except random chaos in the begging. But i agree that Crazyhouse is interesting and complicated and variants with more pieces that classic ones are even more complicated and harder to play. I rather play variants with LESS pieces (Diana Chess and Los Alamos Chess) or with different board size (Far Chess 12 and Wide Chess 12).
