Evangelizing Difficult People (An Apology and Exhortation)

Some people want nothing to do with Christianity. In fact, they go out of their way to try to knock it down? While our temptation might be to attack them back, we are called to something greater.

I’m not Catholic, but my mother was. So, I have a taste of both the Protestant and Catholic worlds. Oddly enough, my maternal grandmother was protestant, and my maternal grandfather was Catholic. I understand that this issue created a point of contention, within the family. When I was six, I wanted to go to church for the first time, but wasn’t allowed to do so, because my mother thought I was too young at the time. Thankfully, I now understand that there is no age limit, when it comes to any church. I admire you for fighting the good fight. You’re going to find “difficult people” out there. But being a follower of Christ was never meant to be easy. Be brave and hang in there. You are a priest, but you’re also human. Sometimes, it’s difficult to create a balance between the priest and human, but that’s OK.

Good message. I just found this channel through a Muslim group. John 13:35 says the world will know we are disciples of Jesus by our love for others. I found this to be very true when I encountered Sikhs for the first time - they are so full of Divine Love and Joy, I chose to worship with them in Spirit and Truth for the past seven years. They do not proselytize at all, Sikhs encourage everyone to follow their own religion to the utmost of their ability. Yet the anointing is upon them so strongly because they have The Word, that others spontaneously convert. Sadly, I hardly ever see Christians I want to emulate, because they think redemption means "I can do whatever I want to without worrying about consequences because I'm covered by the blood", instead of doing the Lord's work. I applaud those who have stayed in the Church and fight to keep it Holy.

As someone with Asperger, it took me a long time to understand (and see with respect) that humanity is not purely rational, but also emotional. We must convert the "heart", not just the mind, as the Psalmist sings many times. What that also taught me is how completely impotent I am to convert anybody. At least without Christ. I can think in my arrogance that I have the perfect logical defence of Catholicism. And maybe I even do. So what? That means nothing alone. What converts people is the Spirit that I take with me to them. So if I move someone's heart, it isn't because I'm intelligent or wise or a combination of both. It's because Christ has at that moment gifted that person with clarity through me and that person accepted Him. We as Catholics are only the intermediaries of that conversation. We bring the Word to them. The Word then talks to them. And then they decide if they accept the Word or not. It's a relationship between them and the Word, not between them and us. That's what I feel nowadays at least.

This is so important. I know that your ministry comes from a place of love, so I am drawn in to listen to what you say. When we encounter hate, we become defensive and hateful in response and do not listen. But because your message comes with love (you genuinely want what's best for your audience), it so much easier to believe. Through your ministry (and others eg Acension Presents) I have come to learn so much from you of the Catholic faith. I have fallen in love with the Virgin Mary as a mother and have come to appreciate many other aspects of your Church. But when people (Catholic, protestant, anyone) comment with hate or condescension of others, I am turned off and couldn't care less what they say. Please, brothers in faith, the salvation of souls is too important to allow hate or ignorance into our speech when we speak with each other or with non believers. Love is the most important commandment. - A friendly Anglican (Church of England)

I'll be honest, since I try to avoid ad hominem like the plague, I have on occasion told somebody "are you dense" during an online argument. Granted one of those arguments by the grace of God somehow cooled down to the point where I had genuinely convinced the other that no, we don't hate science. Still one of my finest moments thinking back, that even if I didn't convince them to be baptized, I still was able to make them think even a bit better of the Church.

I agree with you 100%, Father!! I'm a Catholic layman who (having taken a double major at De Paul U. in Chicago: American History and Theology) taught Religious Studies for 31 years. Twenty of those years were as the Department Chair. I enjoyed the teenagers. Yet now that I'm retired, when I meet the same antics in adults, it drives me crazy. There's no reason for ANY adult responding to your presentations to react in a vulgar or disrespectful manner. Let these crazies have it!! The internet has allowed trolls to spew out anything and suffer no consequences (EXCEPT living in their own skin.....yuck). If I don't like a TV/radio channel, I just hit the OFF button. Do the same Father.....delete them & block them. Here's some advice a priest on our staff (former Army chaplain) gave me when I first started teaching. He said: "John just keep in mind that you CAN'T fix STUPID and you CAN'T shine S- - T." That's the honest-to-God truth and I still stick to that maxim at age 73. God bless you for all you do. And "get your Irish up" my friend.

It took me a long time to learn something that my father tried to teach me when I was a teen. When you tell someone to shut up or call them a name or anything along that line? Their ears are automatically closed and they will not listen, no matter how sound your argument is. Who is the saint that said “let your actions be your sermon“? I have often found that is the best way. And often times simply responding with a thought-provoking question of my own and qualifying it by saying I will think about their point but out of respect, they should all think about mine. Even in the Middle East, where religion is not really politely discussed, this seem to have worked. Thank you so much, father, for all of The content you post on this channel. I do watch it on a regular basis and pray for your continued success.

I am catholic from Serpong - Indonesia. Many things we can learn from your youtube Father Casey who always challenges us to come back and focus on the real Christ. Your strong and swooping narrative at the end of the explanation really makes us all reflect on what we have done so far is right or far from it. Especially for this video, it's true that it is good relationships that make people change and not teaching that blames other people's views. People will change because they believe in us, who sincerely show unconditional compassion and help, dare to sacrifice and empathize with them even though we are different in many ways. Thank you very much father Casey for the many you tube you have made which calls us back to being real disciples of Christ in our daily lives. Please pray for all of us Father Casey to become true disciples of Christ. Please allow me to pray for you too that the Holy Spirit is always with you in everything you post on KZread. Amen.

I literally just had a full 4 or 5 hours arguing with other Christians on a topic because they were stating I, Protestants (of a certain sort), and all Catholics were of Babylon because of a specific thing I don't practice the way they do. It was a very bad discussion. One was very rude (once called us filth), and the other was nice but made frustrating assumptions. I realized halfway through that I began to hate their denomination because of this argument, and realized I was more motivated by anger towards them in an instance of unsolicited doctrinal debate that began with me asking for advice about Baptism. I appreciate hearing this from you. I need to reform my emotional state when it comes to arguing to be loving. This has happened multiple times this week and has probably eaten 10 hours of my valuable study time (very bad thing). Thanks again.

One of my BFFs switched from being Catholic to being evangelical. She went from making fun of those of us who followed our faith to one who tried to convert us at every opportunity. On two occasions, when she badgered me, I don't know how it happened, or where the the knowledge came from, but for every bible quote she could give me, I was able to quote one back, and actually find it in the Bible. I don't know who wrote what in the best of times, but I truly believe God was walking my fingers, lol. She leaves me alone that way now, and is one of the most troubled folks I know. If she could have applied the fire she had at the beginning of her evangelical life to the Truth, I believe her life would be much more peaceful. You Fr. Casey are an inspiration, and I pray daily for our priests, but also for their detractors. Some hearts only God can change directly.

Hello Fr. Casey. ❤ I just recently discovered your channel and I absolutely love it, and have been binge watching your videos. I'm Roman Catholic and I've been to a Catholic school for 12 years from kindergarten up to high school. But then I attended a secular, public university and up until my career, I slowly forgot the teachings of our Church. Your videos are brief but very helpful and I wish to revisit my catechism classes again. I'm really not perfect and there are times I have strayed away from our Church. 😔 But as I gotten older, I feel God's presence more and more especially this year. It's wonderful to have a renewed sense of faith. I also followed your channel Upon Friar Review with Fr. Patrick and I really enjoyed your videos. Hope you can do more! I look forward to relearning our Church's teachings. ❤ Doing my best to be a better servant of our Lord each day and I hope to make Him proud. Much love from the Philippines 🇵🇭

Thank you Fr Casey. One of the "things" which sets we Catholics apart from "other" Christians/non Christians are the many, many miracles which cannot be explained by science or any other method. Suggest checking out by interested peoples Eucharistic Miracles, the image of Our Lady of Guardelupe, saints who are still "in one piece" years after death, etc. etc. I believe that these miracles are just pointers to the truth....which is held by Jesus Christ within His Church! Jesus prayed that we would be one as He and The Father are one! It shows how stupid and arrogant we humans are, doesn't it?

This woman spoke blasphemy in front of a room full of people and I didn't know how to correct her without pushing her away 😔 🙏 from the Faith. I would have called her out on her mental illness. And I would have given her too much power over my own hurt. Because I couldn't teach in that one moment. What I couldn't do was teach the truth to her. There’s so much truth here that I wish more people and groups would hear and take to heart. I think we’ve all seen so many downright dreadful back and forth spitting matches over the internet. It’s so easy for people to degrade into low blows and heavy handed insults when we don’t know them. So easy to see each other as words on a screen than as a fellow humans. And it’s so easy for us to lose sight of our own goal of convincing or conversion and turn to this, all the while breeding more hatred and resentment towards our position within those we’re talking to, due to the poor way we’ve treated them. We justify their preconceptions of the opposition, and devalue the truth in our positions. Thank you for fighting this fight, Father. I’ll be praying for your strength in virtues for your endeavors.

I enjoy many of your videos and have been able to better care for my patients who are Catholic because of the way you are able to explain the details of your specific sect. It has helped me to understand some of the roots of nicean Christianity better, and to better understand all the common things our faiths have. Your video about vaccines was so helpful!!! It has allowed me to counsel my patients with greater accuracy and point to your videos for a more full explanation of the Catholic churches stance on this subject. You are human, and it is human to fail, to sin, to fall down... it is ok to allow God's grace to lift you back up, repent and try again. Being vulnerable and letting others see you do that process helps them come to Christ better. So bless you for that!
