Evangeline, Evangeline Curses the soul of the Mississippi Queen That pulled her man away. Bayou Sam, from South Louisian' Had gambling in his veins Evangeline, from the Maritimes Was slowly goin' insane. High on the top of Hickory Hill She stands in the lightnin' and thunder Down on the river the boat was a-sinkin' She watched that queen go under Evangeline, Evangeline Curses the soul of the Mississippi Queen That pulled her man away. A group of us saw Emmylou's first concert. Late 1967, she sang and played in a small field with no stage or electronics. Just her and about 40 of us in Topanga Canyon. A beautiful day; we sat in the dried grass and listened to her (in the dark ages before cell phones, etc. we went to each other's homes and spread the word she was going to play).

It didn't get any better than this! R.I.P. Rick Danko!.🙏 (buried at Woodstock) ✌😎

Seriously, Emmylou will you marry me? If you watch the entire show, notice how the Band all switch instruments on various songs, a completely talented group of people. I love how at the end of this song they keep rolling as they just all walk away.
Gorgeous song!!! So pretty!!!! Robbie was right on the money when he called Emmylou Harris exquisite in his book !!! She looked exquisite and sounded exquisite! Fourty-five years later, she's still exquisite!!! God bless! 🙏❤️🙏
The Band is certainly one of the most talented groups of all time.
We miss you Rick Danko, Richard Manuel &Levon Helm
Such a brilliant performance from a brilliant film. Love it
Always brings back the memories of the very first weeks at university. When I had a smile on my face, friends to smile about
Thank you Benny for introducing this movie to me...I've enjoyed it for years!!!
Awesome 👌 what a song 🎵 👏 🙌 make me feel good all over !
Man, THIS is music. Juxtapose this with the top-40 music of today, and it's truly a sad sight.
Dankos voice is perfectly suited to this song. Amazing piece of music. Love it.

It depends on the song. Robbie knew who could do the most justice to his songs. Cannot imagine Levon singing "It makes no difference" or Stage Freight, those songs were made for Rick. However, I cannot imagine Rick singing Up on Cripple Creek, or The night they drove old Dixie down",@@howie9751

superb performance-the 60's and 70's were excellent for many genres of music. unfortumately, quality songs like this one went from few and far between to almost non-existent these days.
Preciosa música y letra. Nunca me canso de oírla. Hace muchos años vi la película recuerdo las entrevistas, el porque se retiraban, todo el escenario austero pero impecable. Fue fantástico . Nunca la olvidaré.
Country Rock rocks! especially this song..
Emmylou Harris is captivating and hypnotic. I can't take my eyes off of her. She's so poised and graceful, and relaxed, very natural. If I let myself, I could sit and watch her videos all day long on KZread.
The most beautiful song, the first time I heard it I fell in love.
These guys were truly The Band.
It did not matter which genre of music The Band played ,their musicality was if the highest standard ! Quite remarkable ...
Emmylou Harris voice, coated all over those voices like a fine sauce, making the entire recipe worth making. A womans voice is such pleasant gift to a mans open hearted sentimental idaes in song. Like silk on an axe handle, her voice makes it all glide home.
Just plain Beautiful.......
Everlasting song rings through the ages, man these musicians were damn good, notice Richard playing drums Levon on the mandolin..very cool

+BBQMAN81 this video is *TOO COOL*
Such a lovely song! This man had troubles and yet could sing a song so appropriate to his struggles. It's a somber expression, a Ray Charles tone so clear; but, all his own. "You don't know me". That's what my X wife said! This tune is dynamic and well expressed. I hurt for this man's struggle.
This is the best band ever. They are all so talented on many levels. Some people think the Beatles were the greatest but they were not even close though I do love their musict
The best right there of all of them
I've listened to this a hundred times and never heard that before. Cool.
Absolutely Beautiful!
I would say it's over a decade since I listened to this track but Levon Helms voice in particular stick with me. I remember a previous comment on this that I thought was really funny. Paraphrased; Levon Helm seems like the kind of guy who could fix your fence :)
Ya know what makes this song even more wonderful? For a literature geek like me anyway. . .is that Emmylou looks just like Evangeline is described in Longfellow's poem.
"Evangeline" [Intro] She stands on the bank of the mighty Mississippi Alone in the pale moonlight Waitin' for a man, a riverboat gambler Said that he'd return tonight They used to waltz on the banks of the mighty Mississippi Lovin' the whole night through 'Til the riverboat gambler went off to make a killing And bring it on back to you. Evangeline, Evangeline Curses the soul of the Mississippi Queen That pulled her man away.
Timeless. Robbie!!!
Interesting to see Levon on the mandolin, Richard on the drums & Rick on the fiddle... RIP boys.

when they were young and in their prime, they did it all the time, now that they are old and gray they only do it ...

Even better than my memory... Pass me a tissue, please?
One of the best songs ever, agreed! And Emmylou Harris looks like an angel just descended from above, in that simple blue dress, beautiful, pure, sweet and talented, I can only imagine all the guys from the band falling like crazy for her, who wouldn't?

Possibly the most bigly stable performance of any one song I’ve ever seen
Truly the best song by The Band.
Time when music made sense. Unlike todays forgetful songs.
This is truly one of the best songs ever. Thanks for posting.
Best 25 dollars I ever sent, and it came with turkey day foods
A group of us saw Emmylou's first concert. Late 1967, she sang and played in a small field with no stage or electronics. Just her and about 40 of us in Topanga Canyon. A beautiful day; we sat in the dried grass and listened to her (in the dark ages before cell phones, etc. we went to each other's homes and spread the word she was going to play).
Definately a bass overdub because no one but Rick could be playing that way and he is playing the fiddle too! Emmylou is the most lovely mammal of all time. Nobody else even comes close. Always loved how she wore a blue dress for this. I saw the Band three or four times and always got knocked out by them. I used this song to launch a boat that I built and will build another boat named "Emmylou." I'd like to name one "Evangeline" but that ain't lucky!
I so wish I could have seen them live.
@Ergreenthumb Kudos to you for finding & enjoying old gold. I bought 'The Band' album in 1969 while living in Germany, & still have the vinyl! Imagine our hippie parties back then! There was musical magic in those days. 'The Last Waltz' graciously captures that era of music & many of its great musicians inside & outside The Band. It makes me cry too! Such beauty! Such goosebumps! Such a long time ago.
love this tune
