EV Conversion Classic Car - Part 1 of our Puma EV conversion.
Its been a while since I came up with the project idea and its time for our first episode. Join me as I go from knowing nothing about converting a car to electric to a completed vehicle.

Excellent project! I remember back in the late 70s wanting sooo badly to get one of those Corbin-Gentry conversion kits and putting it into a Kelmark GT. (confident you'll know the reference) I never did, but I did have a Sebring-Vangard project for a while. Good times.

9:55 I'm VERY interested to see how the EV motor works with a trans. I could never figure out why evs don't have transmissions where you can make use of their tremendous instant torque and hp but then once you get up in speed, reduce the energy consumption by the use of gearing. Now this brings me to another query: who in this world needs an Electric Pickup Truck that does 0 - 60 mph in 3 seconds? Now since you're using a transmission, does that mean you'll get 3 forward gears and 3 reverse gears since reverse is caused by changing the direction of the electric motor? lol "you think it's fast in forward, wait until you see me in REVERSE" lolol

@@LouTrottier that's what I'm thinking and I bet you will see an increase in range because of it. As long as it can handle the torque. VW motors weren't the most powerful. (yeah the leaf blower motor is only 107 hp so it's not outrageous. Even the clutch and flywheel should be able to handle it.

Transmissions are generally unnecessary in an EV. They are needed in ICE vehicles because internal combustion engines have power curves that are very "peaky" - they also don't put out much power low in the RPM range, so in most of the power curve you're getting like 30% of max power. With a transmission you can get peak power at 5 different points on your speedometer (5-speed transmission) rather than 1. EVs have very flat power curves. They start off at 100% torque and then as speed builds they lose some, but even at high speed they might produce 80% as much power.. still a lot. And their efficiency curves are also pretty flat. So while, yes, you can get additional power by putting in a transmission, it's not worth the added inefficiency of always having the transmission in the drivetrain. Plus they add extra weight and complexity. There is a reason why there are almost no EVs that have transmissions.

@@BillCarlson I realize all that, but you erred on a couple of things kinda sorta: On start up at 0 rpm Yes, electric motors produce instant torque AND hp, but they also have massive current draws at that point. That's why massive electric motors have starter windings that are effectively a starter motor inside the larger motor to get the large stator spinning. This is, in effect, a "first gear". By simply bolting up the EV motor and keeping the trans you'll eliminate this huge current draw and most likely increase the range. Once again, no one in all practicality needs a pickup or hummer that does 0 - 60 in 3 seconds. Me? A guy who used pickups for WORK, I'd rather have the drive train more balanced and be able to make it to the job site and home again on a single charge.
