EV CHARGER TEST ADAPTERS, WHY you need one & HOW they work - METREL A1532XA

Ғылым және технология

An EV charger test adapter is essential for any electrician who's serious about installing EV charge points.
The EV tester adapter will simulate the presence of a car and mimic various charging states and simulate faults.
In this video, we look at the Metrel A1532 and the newly introduced A1532XA version. Along the way, we explore the PP and CP knobs and how type 2 charging cables work.

Nice video. How about tackling the 6mA DC RCD test that is causing so many problems. To be fair Metrel is pretty close after their latest firmware update but even they are not 100% yet. Fluke, my brand of choice, say maybe by the end of the year they will bring something to market (don't hold your breath), Megger do a ramp test for the DC and so nearly always return a value higher than 6mA even when the RDC-DD/Type B is working just fine. We all now know the dangers of DC leaking back into the coils of RCD's (slow or even no tripping) and so the standards set out in IEC 62955 are very important but we lack the test equipment to consistently verify compliance. As installers what do we do?

And how long before they start fitting resistors on to cheaper cables to fool the charger in to thinking it's a more capable cable?

The standard is designed actually so as you add more resistance the rated current goes down. Also means if you have a poor contact on the sense connection, the charger in theory should reduce the charge current capacity down

Great Tester - but, whilst these testers check the chargers with varying test parameters, what about the Type2 cable itself - does the cable need periodic testing and if yes, how can this be done?

Correct me if I am wrong but as I understand the “charger” is integral part of the car. The charge point is only a power supply to the charger in the car.

EV testing facilities should be integral to all modern testers, all these plug in adapters are just manufacturers playing catchup and charging us for it. All those prompt screens, if you don't know what tests you need to do maybe you shouldn't be doing them!

I agree the Metrel is overcomplicated/unnecessary and I don't like the build quality one bit. The unit looks and feels like a toy not a professional tool. That said, Metrel are the only ones who can complete all the test correctly. Fluke haven't addressed the EV test and the Megger 1741+ that is supposed to address the EV test doesn't do it. Like I said, the adapters are not the problem, the fact that we cannot properly test our installs is most definitely a problem. These guys say they are about to address the issue with the problematic 6mA DC test, it will be an interesting video and I dare say lively in the comments.
