I don`t think you are right about this. Reading all the negative posts about her before final, the copy and paste comments accusing her of plagarism, winners should not be allowed to participate ESC and so on made me think she would not receive that good score that she received. My guess was she would get a 2 digit televote score based on this so I was happy the ”hate” against her didn`t influence tele voters that much.

There is a real danger here of the public eventually switching-off and saying to themselves "what's the point in voting" if the juries can crown their winner whilst overriding the public majority (who've all spent real money voting). After all, it doesn't cost the juries a penny to vote. With money being involved, maybe more sway should be given to the public in a 60/40 share. And Germany coming last is ridiculous but it exposes the juries for only having a limited palette in music. "Industry experts" they are not. I'm no fan of the song but I recognise talent recognise the genre and give credit where it's due in the marketplace.

@@listonheinz9103 that i know... I know that if we only had televoting no ballad would win and it would be a contest of who could outdo the crazy to get votes. But the jury is incredibly biased and have proven to be corrupt on several occasions, because the jury is so small. I think that the people behind Eurovision should revise the juries going forward. Would that be a different scoring system, a larger pool of juries or something else. I think this year has proven that. I have actually been for the juries role in the competition, but i still think the winner should be the choice of Europe. Imo.

@@tony0930I think we should keep juries but a 30/70 or 40/60 split for jury/televote would potentially improve the current situation, which is unsatisfactory. But the jury system also needs scrutiny; maybe a review of the criteria, how well the jurors interpret and adhere to the criteria, and also the diversity of the juries needs to be improved on different fronts. We can’t keep pretending that some countries don’t have an outsized influence with juries, and effectively have a head start.

  • @listonheinz9103

@@tony0930 Then you would get a problem with clown acts and goofballs taking over the competition, like they were doing in the mid 00s. That would put off a 30%-40% of the viewership and EBU would loose money. The current system is a very good balance, perhaps minor tweaks could be made but it has to be 50/50.

As a Finnish person and a Eurovision fan I must say that the competition failed us all this year. Käärijä was this year's moment, legend and the icon and his victory would have been the perfect Eurovision story. He had the charm of Alexander Rybak, crazyness of Lordi, and song of Netta - and yet before all this he was an unknown young man even in his own country. He was the full Eurovision package who would have brought joy to the Eurovision scene for years to come. I can't stand that this story was destroyed by people who want Eurovision victories to be radio friendly English pop music - this means every country should just order the song from Sweden (like Azerbaijan, Malta or Cyprus often do). This jury plot kills the originality of the competition - if you can't win after getting historically large amount of televotes, why would you even bother?! It hurts even more to see that the biggest robbery in ESC history was against my own country. Finland has won only one time and we would have taken the victory with over the top pride and excitement. Next years hosting would have been a huge pride. But now we'll see the 3th Swedish hosting in little over 10 years. Haven't we seen enough of that already?

It’s beyond ridiculous that you could receive so much support from the public and still not win. I actually won’t watch Eurovision next year, I have no enthusiasm for another show from Sweden and I’m not an Abba fan and we know it will all centre around them. But I’m not just disappointed for Finland but other performers who should have received recognition from the jury, what is their purpose if they are just going to give points to the same boring manufactured pop? I’m so sorry but Kiitos Suomi for introducing us to the joy that is Käärijä, he will always be remembered and I hope will join other legends like Verka Seduchka. Also congratulations for cha cha cha being in the U.K. charts, I don’t think we have ever had a song in Finnish before, that’s actually a higher achievement than Loreen in my opinion. Also Finland national final right now is so amazing, you’ve qualified three years in a row and there’s no reason to think that you aren’t going to continue sending amazing songs because the system is so good. To my mind, many don’t wish to acknowledge or question the headstart that Sweden seems to have every year with the juries, and/or wonder why that might be the case. I really didn't like the results. The jury vote was terrible, to much politics and a lot of the jury wanted Finland to lose. The public vote. People that are willing to vote, only vote for pop english songs or songs with crazy themes. Any other tipe of songs will recive low points from the public, especially balads, except for Italy for some reason. That beautiful song from Spain deserved better than five points, and germeny didn't deserved to be last place. I think there was a time i between 2016 and 2021 that any type of song could win, but now we are back to pop english songs and crazy songs being the only ones to recebe big points from the public. 123 points for Poland is a joke.

Apart from the situation with the juries, the second shocker for me this year was learning that almost no other country apart from Finland (I think the other one was Estonia?) shows translated lyrics as subtitles for every song performed in a foreign language (when watching via the national broadcaster). As someone who grew up watching Eurovision and became accustomed to understanding what each singer is singing about, it's so hard to believe! How is it supposed to be a fair competition when the only way to understand lyrics in foreign languages is to check them separately? You just get punished for using any other language than English. Also it would allow people with hearing problems to enjoy the show better. I hope EBU at least offers official translations on their website or something... How have they not figured this out yet? I'm baffled. It would obviously cost some, but it would be worth it a million times.

Subtitles are actually becoming more common now. Interestingly in China, EVERYTHING is subtitled, literally every single TV program of every type, including films

Watching the points being handed out was nerve-racking. I really like "Cha Cha Cha" and I will listen to it many times in the future, but I also love "Tattoo" and as a swede I naturally wanted Loreen to win. Make her a two time winner, get us the 7th win to tie with Ireland and bring ESC to Sweden where I hopefully will get to see it for the first time. And apart from the top 2 battle, it was also interesting to see that there were a few surprises this year. I never saw the appeal of Spains entry, but based on the odds and how people have talked about it I expected a top 10 finish atleast, maybe top 5. Same with France - a song that I really liked, but it wasn't as good in the final. Also nice to see Belgium finishing so high. I wasn't sure if it would do well. I’ve been following Eurovision since 2008 and never has there been a more bizarre voting sequence than this year. I can usually predict how well certain countries will do, but this year was just quite odd. Estonia, Belgium, Australia, Lithuania and Cyprus all in the top 12 surprised me quite a bit. Spain, France and Austria were absolutely robbed. Also, all of my bottom 3 (Poland, Albania and Croatia) came top 10 with the televote, that has also never happened to me. Still, at least I’m quite happy with the top 2 since I had Sweden and Finland both there. Loreen deserved to win and is an absolute Eurovision legend. Her voice, performance and emotions are really next level. Sad for Finland as this was their only realistic chance at winning since 2006, but Kaarija’s vocals were just too weak. Have you noticed the interesting trend for winners over the years? 2015 was a kind of pop style up-tempo anthem, 2016 was an Avant-garde ethnic infused emotional song, 2017 was very slowed down, a ballad very emotionally performed as well. 2018 brought us Toy, with an up-tempo bubblegum pop sound to it. 2019 slowed down again with sort of an anthemic quality to it. 2021 we got a Rock song winner, 2022 was more ethnic infused folk, and now in 2023 we have a beautiful pop song once again. Given the trend, I would imagine next year's winner will likely not be a pop song. Perhaps if Ireland were to go back to their roots and bring in some Celtic music, they'd stand a great chance in the running. I'd also love to see the UK experiment with a more Scottish (bagpipes) and/or Wales driven song. Maybe it'll be the year a Country or even a Jazz song might do well. The different genres winning from year to year as of late, has really been of interest to me. I'm also super excited that Canada is supposed to be coming in as well (rumoured anyways) as I'm Canadian myself lol. Anyways, thank you for your coverage! I really enjoy your videos man! So much to analyse here, did the running order in the semi with Estonia being 4th and Australia closing the semi have a huge impact? (Especially considering Australia won the televote and then did poorly with the televote in the final). Did more people vote for Estonia in the semi assuming that without juries Estonia might NQ?
