HAHAHAHA! Yeah, that's not a novelty act, that's Ireland straight-up trolling the contest. The most epic troll entry ever. If you don't want to win and you're in the middle of a national financial crisis, you might as well throw in the towel with style!

If it helps give a bit more context, more than winning 7 times, the 1990's was the country's prime when it won 3 years in a row ('92, '93, '94) and then again in '96. From then, throughout the 2000's they were basically flopping so they sent a joke entry lol

The multiple wins in the 90s almost bankrupted rte(basically Irish bbc) so some people believe rte tried to loose

I un ironically love this song. The lyrics are hilarious and the chorus is so catchy. 2008 was a year full of joke entries and I loved it but it was also part of the reason that the juries were brought back to Eurovision

To be fair, the majority of entries in 2007 and 2008 were kinda out there...

I love how Irland went from renowned Eurovision masters to literally giving less than zero fucks. This performance is absolutely iconic.

Dustin is one of the most famous TV celebrities on Irish TV. He has also had several Number 1 songs in the Irish charts - best of which is Spanish Lady 😍🔥 His 2008 entry was. a joke but still one of the most popular Eurovision entries we sent - at least here in Ireland. He also unofficially ran for President 😂

He's not one of the most of famous celebrities in Ireland. 2008 Eurovision was pretty much his swan song on Irish TV, he's only made the odd appearance since. He's been irrelevant since 2008.. Also we won 7 times, so it's nowhere near the most popular. 2014 was our most underrated of the last decade

To put Dustin into context, he's a bit of a national figure. He's basically the 'adult' portion on kids tv making a load of inappropriate jokes that go over the kids heads. He ran for president at one stage, and got 10% of the vote in some parts of the country. Sending him to Eurovision was basically giving Eurovision the bird haha.. pardon the pun

Dustin was basically trolling the Contest and Ireland's recent run of bad results, especially finishing last the previous year (2007). His opening lines are "I come from a nation that knows how to write a song. Europe, where, oh where, did it all go wrong?" The general consensus in Ireland is that the joke fell completely flat and he did far more harm than good. Going to Eurovision and trolling it was not a great idea and may have seemed rude to many. Also, he may have damaged the credibility of the Contest in Ireland and discouraged decent artists from wanting to get involved in subsequent years.

This was just two years after Silvia Night (which was a much better joke act in my opinion)

Another bit of context is that Ireland was going into recession in 2008 and we really couldn’t have hosted Eurovision the following year so we sent a joke act to ensure we would lose

There's an Irish comedy show called Father Ted where in one episode the two priests are sent to represent Ireland at Eurovision with a song called 'My Lovely Horse'. It's by far the worst song and are only sent to ensure Ireland don't win as they cannot afford to host it again. This song is just like that fictional show!

This was basically us giving the middle finger to the Eurovision as it has become a politically charged, shitty competition that is all about voting for your neighbor and which song has the most action.

It was good fun sending Dustin to the Eurovision but Europe still haven't forgiven us.

Ireland won a lot. But when language choice became free.. so all could sing in English, they no longer got points for being understood, and additionally stopped sending songs of the same quality as once. Whilst everyone else upped their game, they didnt and lost alot for a bit. This is a reaction to that losing streak.. Seems like they have picked it up again and send better as of late :) Thank goodness, as they do write the most incredible ballads :). But you should try to see some of their songs from the 80s, like any of Johnny Logans incredible entries (He's mr eurovision and has won 3 times as songwriter/2 performing the songs himself) And Jedward for novelty and how it was between winning a lot and now :)

I rly hope Sweden send something like this next year. A nor serious act. Since so many think Sweden always send to ”perfect” songs. Omg. How can that even be a bad thing.

A novelty act would have a very hard time winning Melodifestivalen. There are sometimes some novely acts in Melfest, like Rolandz with "Fuldans" and Edward Blom with "Livet på en pinne", but they're not actually in to win it, but to create a variation of acts in Melfest. I hope we don't send any novelty acts, ever, but keep taking pride in taking Eurovision seriously, and keep sending quality songs, that can be successful outside Eurovision.But I hope we'll send a female singer next year, since the complain is (for the last years) is that we "always" send hot boys. My wish is Sarah Dawn Finer, she can sing. And she is also funny. So she could pull of a comedy act to. Perhaps start as her beloved alter ego Lynda Woodruff, and then just change and sing some amazing ballad.

I think a real novelty joke act like this would find itself hard to get chosen anywhere now. Certainly in Ireland. There's a tone of seriousness now to most countries but again certainly Ireland that would make stuff like this happening again very very unlikely lol

Believe it or not since this was a protest song (other countries in western Europe were too chicken to speak out that at this time) it was only tele-voting and all the Eastern countries were voting for each other ,soon after this the rules were changed to add jury's.

We in the Netherlands - as being one of the original contestants in the 1950s - felt the same way about where the ESC was going, but we never had the guts to send a troll act. Everyone who I know that follows ESC remembers Dustin the Turkey as something great :-)

I totally get why people send links to the bizarre and the quirky, but what I really love on your channel is when you are caught by surprise by something unexpectedly beautiful, something moving or by some glorious, spectacular staging or choreography . That's what Eurovision is all about - the unexpected... I saw my first contest way, way back in 1970 and yup, I'm still hooked and still unexpectedly enthralled year after year... You have so much to look forward to (and back on).. and with Eurovision Asia debuting this year, yup - twice a year :). I really enjoy your comments, thank you so much for sharing

Dustin the turkey was a big star on Irish tv for kids tv show but in typical Irish humour he had adult overtones so was very popular as a comedienne , the Irish had done so well in the 90s but seemed to go off the rails in the 00s granted some of our entries were a disaster but some were not so bad but we received very few points from countries and I guess we saw this as a backlash this was the Irish reaction lol it divides the Irish to this day ! I also think Ireland felt no one would vote for us anymore as we had no neighboring countries ... I kinda agree loosely with this

It’s actually a total parody on block-voting when Eastern European countries constantly voted for each other, even when countries like Ireland, UK and France sent so much better songs than those that won. In 2001-2008 all countries to win were from Eastern Europe and that fact was pretty much hated in Western Europe, and the culmination of hate happened in 2008 with Russia winning. In 2009 mixed jury-televoting system was presented and that kinda changed things.

:D The year Ireland basically trolled Eurovision xD We won 7 times but that last was in 1996 and since then we do pretty bad almost every year :'( The best we did in recent years was 8th place in 2011 :D You should react to that one too :D

Thank god that EBU brought back the juries and startet the 2 semifinals-format from that year - this entry got slaughtered..

Last time Ireland won was in 1996 but yeah they've won 7 times, they had a hattrick of wins 1992,1993,1994, then Norway won in 1995 and then Ireland won again in 1996. So their prime was in the 80's and 90's :)

Honestly this song is one of the the reason jurys were introduced a year later.

As an irish man i am deeply embarassed by this, speaking of 2008 you should watch the full show - so many great entries that year

In brief I guess, Ireland sent this as a joke cuz no one ever sent points to Ireland especially in the 2000s and even 2010s, yes Ireland has won Eurovision the most times but that was really early in Eurovision, it has been ages since Ireland has even qualified, before this year Ireland qualified in 2013, and even then they came last. it's all eastern Europeans sending points to eastern Europeans, and the voting blocs being very prominent in the 2000s. Nobody was voting for Ireland and so it was like u said its a novelty act but also just a troll act too, kinda like we don't care, you don't really give us points anymore but give us 12 points anyway, irlande douze points. However as you saw this year, things are changing and the voting blocs seem to be dissipating, what with Russia not qualifying, and none of the Caucasus countries qualifying etc, people see a song is crap and don't vote for it and don't vote just because it's mother Russia. you know what I mean. Congrats on Ireland finally qualifying this year and getting 16th place, far from their early days but better than anything in the past 5 or 6 years.

Last Eurovision Ireland hosted it cost the state 30 Million Euro's and the Public said never again. Johnny Logan is King of Eurovision we will cherise the memories.

It was a perfect storm for Russia to not qualify, it lost Armenia,Azerbaijan,Estonia,Lithuania,Belarus, and Bulgaria to the first semi plus they got a bad running order spot.

Actually 11th place in semi for Russia by televoting is quite high still for those horrible vocals, but I’m glad she wouldn’t qualify even if it would be up to audience solely.

another great fun act from this year is spain 2008 also 2014 has some good ones Poland,lativia and Belarus . to me is a part of what makes eurovision great you can send crazy stuff do what you want to do and most of all have fun. tho the best troll act of all time is so verdka or the russian grannies

May I ask you for Iceland 2006?

It was a protest song from Ireland that once in the nineties one four years out of ten. Three of those one a row. But in the 2000's they had done bad results after bad results and many would argue that the quality of the entry. React to Ireland's winner 96 and their entry in the 1972 that did not do well but it was an interesting entry language wise.

There's a theory Ireland can't afford to host Eurovison, so we sabotage ourselves every year

Sometimes joke entries are quite fun and not so bad, like Lithuanias LT United in 2006 i think, or lithuania again in 2010 with eastern european funk :D they do a lot of joke entries :D

Brilliant Brilliant Brilliant, song was a protest about the voting process in the Eurovision song contest, only thing missing is Zig and Zag, should have made it to the final and should have won.
